Also personally now that TM is mainstream™ and a good subject for clickbait hot takes I feel like there's just less motivation than there was back when the audience for translations was a relatively small dedicated fanbase. A while ago I translated a Nasu interview that I thought was interesting and my reward was an ANN writer screaming his head off to his audience about what a terrible and stupid person Nasu was with a bunch of people in the replies offering wildly misinterpreted wiki summaries of CCC to support this, ok.jpg

Yeah, the "better than nothing" mentality can lead to stuff like Duwang and other horrible translations because the "translator" honestly believes they are performing a service for the community. I feel like passing a translation through multiple languages falls under that as well.

In 2017 I tried reading through a Google Translate (with Bing Translator as backup) version of the original script.
I filled a 12-page document with passages that I found interesting from a characterization or lore perspective; looking back over them now, half of them are total gibberish. The others--heavily edited late at night by my feeble mind into some semblance of coherence--hint at a climax that rivals KnK 5.
I don't care how many norms, written or unwritten, have to be violated at this point in order to produce a lucid TL of this VN.
Using French as a pivot language? Fine. Mashing together bits of the various failed TL projects into one? Do it.
If gamecreater16 were still with us, the problem would already be solved.

At this point, Mahoyo has been out for the better part of a decade. I see no particular rush to get it translated NOW.
To each his own, but personally I'd much rather wait for a "proper" translation, however long it takes.

Didn't know that there were already efforts being made. That's nice. But still a bit disappointing that somebody else only thought of it a week ago. Maybe tell him to make a github?

I was just suggesting the idea. I never volunteered to do it. I have bigger responsibilities right now and frankly, I would prefer NOT having the entire story spoiled for me.

As for "rushing" it, my point was that paving the road right now would yield much more room for gradual growth/improvement since it'd be cutting the requirements from needing a Japanese translator(rare) to needing just some English major/etc(MUCH more common) to fix the rough parts of the DeepL translation.

And conversely, there's also no guarantee that any future "proper" translation would be any better than this DeepL-based translation. If/when there's mistakes, then the Japanese translator's workload is still being reduced hundred-fold by only having to fix the mistakes rather than having to translate it entirely from scratch.

I don't know, I've never seen anyone improve another person's translation before. I imagine the chances of anyone translating a piece of work when its already translated or improving it (good or bad) will drop considerably.
