Fallout 76 is looking more and more like a shitshow the more I hear of it. In some aspects, at least.
Literally Rust with lootboxes:
A "perk" system made up of fucking lootbox bloody card shitty packs. With +x% to damage and so on. No word on whether they'll be purchasable. At least they'll be tradeable.
Apparently, quests, but no NPCs. At all. Literally the only people you're ever going to see are other players.
Levelling system- you gain a SPECIAL point with every level, along with a card pack, up to level 50, after which, you only get card packs on levelling.
PvP balancing and anti-griefing measures, these are actually quite good:
Pacifist mode: None of your shots will hit another player, they can't hit you.
If you shoot somebody out of the blue, and neither of you are in pacifist mode, it does a little damage, "like slapping them as a challenge", Todd said at QuakeCon. If they shoot back, you both start to do proper damage.
A lower level player will do slightly more damage to a higher level player and take slightly less damage, they're hoping to tone down the advantages a higher level player will get while hunting noobs, their perks will help, and they'll still have the upper hand, but it won't be as straightforward and easy as AHA I HAVE MINIGUN POWER ARMOUR YOU'VE JUST SPAWNED BUT YOU'RE DEAD NOW.
If you keep shooting somebody who doesn't shoot back, and kill them, you're suddenly wanted, you lose sight of everyone else on the minimap, you're visible on everyone else's, all other players gain a bounty for taking you down, and said bounty comes out of your own cap stash. No idea what the point of caps is if there aren't NPC merchants and so on.
Your base can be destroyed (otherwise there's no stopping somebody who'd wall you in just to be a dick), but you can make a blueprint for it, to rebuilt it later. Also, if you change your mind about where you wanted it (oh craaap this place has a better view and resources), you can blueprint the place and rebuild more easily.
Honestly not thrilled about this game, but it could turn out to be a pretty cool Fallout-themed early access survival thing. It's not on Steam, though, so fuck that. Hopefully the next narrative-driven Fallout will release on Steam eventually, even if not at first.
