I think they're conflating it with the curse on Fafnir's treasure in general, which Sigurd pretty hilariously wasn't even a little bit afraid of since "everybody has to die sometime and it's better to be filthy rich until then". But the part about Dainsleif being in Fafnir's treasure, which Hogni and his brothers stole from Sigurd after they plotted his death, that's all legit.
