Assuming that I write another Waver murder mystery sometime, Catherine's certainly the more likely candidate. But Rin is an excellent foil, and if I wrote a series of them, she'd have to appear in at least one.

...Catherine is now alternate universe Seika. Headcanon established.
Rin as Watson to Waver's Sherlock. Oh yes, I like this thought very much, if it ever happens.
The only downside to Rin as Watson is that it would require Waver to grow up and be Lord El-Melloi II (since Rin's a little kid in the time of this story), which means essential changes in his characterization. On the other hand, irascible older Waver and precocious teenaged Rin could be excellent as well, and it would fit nicely into any post-game scenario except UBW Good.
