Honestly, Kirei is one of my favorite characters in Zero and the story made his attitude perfectly understandable through careful development. I'm just glad that swapping genders didn't change who Kirei was deep down inside. Most just make him out as a evil bastard for the hell of it. You deserve props for the characterization in this.

Thanks. I was writing a longer AU story with a teenage Kirei fighting alongside Rin in Heaven's Feel #5, and some of that characterization probably influenced this one.

If I remember correctly, you gave Kirei relatively sympathetic treatment as well in the Zero Sense series (and Just An Unorthodox Thief, for that matter). He's a fun character to write. And, as you said, somewhat tricky.

Exactly. And it's the occasionally admirable nuances that make Kirei interesting. The way he rigidly clings onto his honesty even after everything else has burned itself out, for instance.

Kirei's more appealing as a villain than Gil for that reason. The King of Heroes is a slightly better person than Kirei on paper, but he's also a smug ball of impenetrable arrogance. Kirei isn't. He's much more self-aware. Like there's an unfinished conscience that's a few dozen pieces short of working.

Teenage Kirei, now Lady Kirei

You certainly have a way of taking our villain of the cloth in bold, new directions. I was already a fan of yours after reading Vestigial Mercies and some of your other one-shots (Lovecraft Grail War? Hell yes!), but this just trumped Mercies as my favorite piece of yours.

In taking a character in a new direction, you didn't just slap a familiar name on a brand new character, which is too often what happens when a fan fiction author "reinvents" someone. Kirei is still recognizably Kirei, but you've taken her in a chilling direction in how she would react to the care of an impressionable, vulnerable creature. Given Kirei's knack for killing or at least attempting to kill those he is trusted to support or look after, it's a wonder Caren lived long, but that would have been the easy way out. One can only imagine the slow burn of Lady Kirei's unique condition searing a hole into young Caren's psyche.

And you did it all in very few words. I am very impressed. You're quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.
