Ohhh, so it's like one of those shows where there's porn but they slap on a "historical" label to pretend it's not porn?

Yes and no. I don't know about the show, but the book had sex scenes in it just to have them. Like, they weren't out of nowhere, but they weren't meant to be erotic or anything. Only one I really remember being even close to important(from the first at least) was when you see the Lanisters fucking each other.

The 'it's not port it's art' argument?
<Satehi> I, satehi, thought of tentacles first for entirely inappropriate, disgusting, lewd and perverted reasons

    -_-

Trust me, the sex and nudity aren't meant to arouse anyone. But basically, what mewarm said.

Not really historical at all. But yeah, Dothraki or whatever are obviously based off the Mongols. Raping, pillaging, etc. etc.

But there's quite a bit of fantasy.

Oh. I watched the first episode today.

Yeah, there's a quite a lot of boobs. They added in some extra scenes. Late night television, I guess.

For some reason I was totally expecting Ned Stark to be played by Viggo Mortensen (black hair, white skin, fit), and Robert Baratheon (reddish-brown hair, fat) by Sean Bean (reddish-brown hair, fat). Probably because all they ever talk about in the book is Jon's resemblance (black hair, pale skin) to his father, which is not apparent at all in the show. Hmm. Oh well. It was good.

Ah, I missed it too - college doesn't get HBO, so I'm going to have to hunt it down online. Did they follow the same sort of prologue in the first episode as in the book when they introduce the small party along the Wall that get attacked by the "Others"? I'm looking forward to actually getting a visual of what the "canon" appearance of those things are.

They're called the 'White Walkers' in the show. And it's about a young kid who has his party slaughtered by them and escapes. Not like how it was in the book (the POV character and a Royce get killed and some sixty year old guy escapes because he wasn't there) only to be captured and killed by Eddard. But a group of the Night Watch does get slaughtered.

Also, who else expected Winterfell to have uhh.... More snow? I don't even think there was snow in the show outside of the beginning.

They're called White Walkers in the book, too. And the names of the guys in the beginning aren't revealed, but they are the same three from the book - young stupid Ser Royce, lanky Black Brother and old veteran Black Brother. And one of them got out alive, somehow, to be caught and executed.

I know Winterfell didn't have as much snow in the book, but that's to emphasize the "frigid North-ness" of it. It's how I would have done it, too.

IMO overall it's pretty faithful to the book so far. Some minor changes are made, but that's mainly to add characterization or exposition shortcuts that took too much text to explain.
They changed the ages for a bunch of characters, though. Or at least, the actors themselves are older. (TV Sansa is only THIRTEEN? lolno.)

Sean Bean/Ned is pretty fat, not that far off from King Robert. At least they lampshaded it:
Robert: "You've gotten fat, old man!"
Ned: *eyes the king's gut with a raised eyebrow*

However, one change I wasn't too fond of:
    Spoiler:
I wish Bran had caught Jaime and Cersei actually talking before they got down to sexytime.

They're cutting out all the internal monologues, but that's understandable. They only have time for so much in a show.

Watched this for the first time today, ignoring for the moment the enjoyable amount of boobs that came up, it annoys me that its been so long since I have read this series that I can't remember anything more then little pieces.

Oh, hey, that's the imp right? With the whore wife thing.....and I wonder if that's "stab them with the pointy end" girl

    And things like that.

I've read all the books. I'm going to be cautiously optimistic that the series will be decent quality. At least in the case of Fire and Ice, the amount of violence and sex typical of HBO series is accurate to the original material.

    I lul'd.

The series looks largely faithful, with a few changes, but I don't mind because it's an adaptation.

Aren't they called 'The Others'? >_>

And the names of the guys in the beginning aren't revealed, but they are the same three from the book - young stupid Ser Royce, lanky Black Brother and old veteran Black Brother. And one of them got out alive, somehow, to be caught and executed.
Except in the book young Royce dies against one of The Others and then gets turned into a zombie and kills Will (the POV character). The old guy who sees it runs south and gets caught and executed refusing to say anything. His head is then sent to the leader of the Night Watch who misses him as apparently they were friends or something. He mentions that to Jon.

I know Winterfell didn't have as much snow in the book, but that's to emphasize the "frigid North-ness" of it. It's how I would have done it, too.
Eh, I think everything covered in snow instead of forests makes it seem more frigid but okay. I expected Riverrun to be full of trees and Vale to be plains/fields.

(TV Sansa is only THIRTEEN? lolno.)
Actually, she's older then she's supposed to. She should be 11. She's two years older the Arya in the book (who's 9). Bran was 8 in the book. In the show he was 10.
