That's always a drag, ain't it? Having a sequel or season 2 that goes below the quality of its predecessor.
Gilgamesh was right. I know Eureka Seven is a show I definitely am going to watch.
Why? Asura at end of story had literally become the embodiment of 'the madness of terror', and couldn't be killed no matter what the cast did. Having the wannabe Kishin replace him as final boss would've been an insult to the fans who waited years for Asura to be back in the spotlight after all that hype.
