To answer the thoughts of a number of people in this thread, yes, I have - and am very aware I have - awful control over myself. I preferred to have the crutch of being banned rather than test it in the middle of something important to my education. It indeed would be better for me in the long run to work on my restraint, but I was (and am) quite happy to abandon that nice, abstract, personality goal in favour of the very immediate and concrete problems I was having.

Knowing is half the battle; the rest is forcing yourself to follow it. I mean, I've had friends literally unplug their modem cables if it was important and critical.

Never understood how some people could be that addicted to something.

At least, I didn't feel any particular unhappiness or whatever while I wasn't on BL. I just find it a temptation, amongst many others. I preferred to limit one of the bigger ones.

That's just my personal two cents. This is not a drug addiction, or a substance abuse issue, it is something of willpower. No physical/mental harm will come from not coming here for a few days.

While you are correct in saying that "I can't help myself" is not a useful mindset to an individual seeking to break the addiction, you are still doing a disservice in this specific part:

All addictions are battles of willpower. You gain help from others to help you kick it, but you can also kick it cold turkey - if your willpower is strong enough.

As for my comment which you feel is a disservice, it is because internet addiction does not necessarily cause physical harm by attempting to stop it, unlike alcohol or drugs (delirium tremens, symptoms of withdrawal, etc). There would be things like anxiety, depression, tension, and so on, and those could cause harm, but it's not like those, where the mere cessation of the drug causes problems in and of itself.

I will concede that it is not an immediate threat to life and limb in the same way that trying to cold turkey something like nicotine might be.

Oh, I fully understand how people get addicted to things. Use it/like it enough and a psychological and possibly physiological need for it develops.

But an internet message board is, for most people, not quite in the same league as alcohol or drugs. Of course, we had people who proved that wrong too.
