HF Shirou, though UBW Shirou is good, too, for being willing to stand up for his ideals even after considering their origins (and seriously, why is it presented in-game as being such an unnatural thing to adopt the ideals of a loved parent? That, I think, may well be the one thing I have the hardest time wrapping my brain around in the whole series) and knowing that following them won't lead him to happiness.

But in that respect, how is any ideal not someone's own? I mean, unless you're Gilgamesh, who was born when there were only maybe seventeen people on the planet, every ideal in the world has been thought of by someone already. And you're not going to come to a decision as to whose ideals are correct in a vacuum, but through your own experience of a culture. And Shirou was presented as being especially "wrong" (or That Word), to have adopted someone else's ideals, as if it's not what 95% of people do anyway (see, for example, any devout believer in a religion).
