At the recent VGX awards, one of the real standout announcements (in my view, at least) was for Hello Games' upcoming No Man's Sky; a quite ambitious ground, sea, and space exploration game with a massive procedurally-generated universe to play around in.
I find it interesting to see a game with such a strong Elite vibe off of it show up like this, not least since Elite: Dangerous is also in the works. How might the two games compare and contrast in their respective visions of what lies beyond?

Not gonna lie, I'm skeptical of something like this being completely procedurally generated.

From what I have gathered from a bunch of 2-4 hour in first impressions pieces people have done:
Good - Exploration, aesthetic, scale, variety
Bad - Inventory management, survival, still buggy
Nobody's talked about - Combat, story
Looks boring.
If people didn't get all bent out of shape over walking sims we never would have had to deal with survival mechanics in everything. Thanks a lot, gamers
Played 40minutes of it before work today. Inventory is bad, all menus have mouse controls, so no easy scrolling. And my starting planet has constant acid rain and uppity scorpion lobsters so I kept needing to he'd back to base camp and regen. Also there's an inventory thing where you can store things in your ship whenever you want, but if you want to take them out you have to be in range.

FF XIV: Walked to the End
Started Legend of the Galactic Heroes (14/07/23), pray for me.
Don't think I'd mind survival mechanics so long as it was part of a bigger, more expansive system. I think I'd like it in a sort of manage-your-trading-fleet/empire type of system, where you've gotta make sure you have enough to feed yourself as you go soaring off across the universe, then have to arrange for deliveries to go to places where you can't grow things, and terraforming them with new life and such.

Well, looks like if the reviews on Steam are anything to go by, this is yet another title I'll hold off on until it's on sale. Seems to just be a bunch of brats complaining about optimization issues (which are a problem, but I don't think it's one that deserves an immediate down-vote), but if the few critics I saw that actually seemed legit are anything to go by, this game is about as boring and over-hyped as I expected it to be. Can't say I'm surprised really, this project was ambitious for a AAA company, let alone a 15-man indie team...
I dunno about a bunch of brats complaining about optimisation, I looked through two or three pages and every review was basically "this literally doesn't work", "10fps pls halp" and "it's shit, right?"
