It just seemed like there was a serious comedic element behind it, when nothing of the sort happened. They played it like it would have been a major pain for Sherlock or Sherlock would have fucked up the situation spectacularly when nothing of the sort happened. That's why I said I didn't get it.

And Redbeard was mentioned when Sherlock was talking to Mycroft.

    Oh yeah.

I do agree with you though it was kind of underwhelming.

This season of Sherlock is starting to feel like it's dropping the ball. Hopefully the next episode will make up for it.

It still is entertaining as hell but I mean for a two year break its kind of a let down.

They were worried he was going to mess things up significantly, but he didn't. There wasn't really a joke there, they were trying to be touching and have it be somewhat shocking that despite a few marriage rants and the whole murder thing he actually had a moving and successful speech. I was honestly predicting the inevitable "then he messes it up royally and everyone looks at him in annoyance" moment and was generally surprised (in a good way) that they avoided that obvious route.

That being said, they are obviously setting this season up with a "Sherlock is opening up and becoming more human around the people he cares about", leading to a "Sherlock is lonely" subplot. The end of the second episode was very obvious with this. I can't say I'm looking forward to this as it's been done before, but at least they avoided the obvious cliches regarding Watson getting married. Mary is actually a really likable character here and Sherlock doesn't seem all that jealous of her specifically.

The mention of Redbeard after teasing Sherlock about his impending grand speech - I assume refers to a Chuunibyou past...

    So...

Liked this season, just not as much as others. These three episodes had the tendency to stretch on way too much, specially the second one. They are having trouble regulating the pacing, methinks, since in the seasons before it felt way too fast at times, and now it just feels too slow.

I like the character development though. The characters feel much more humane now, and surprisingly interesting. They were good episodes for accomplishing what they wanted to accomplish, despite some glaring flaws.

That said, I kinda miss them having a more normal case. A bit of a breather between all these storylines and stuff happening.

I have to say that it's especially true for John. Martin Freeman was terrific this season and the range of emotions that he conveyed when he saw Sherlock for the first time was incredible. He was easily my favourite part of season 3.

Yeah. Both Watson and Sherlock had some really good performances during the whole season, with Martin Freeman's probably being the very best. They showed that they can pull off a very big range of emotions, and that they can adapt to the characters' situations almost flawlessly. The characters were fleshed out really well, in big part thanks to this.

This series also seems to be very intent in avoiding the status quo trap that tends to kill off so many good shows for me.

Well. Damn. I'm speechless. Wonderful episode. There is really nothing I could say. Plot twists, interesting references, awesome characters... really, really good.

To be honest, I didn't really miss him... but now that he's back (or is he!?) - and what a comeback with style! - I definitely look forward to him.

Recently caught the show on TV. First saw an episode where Sherlock meets Moriarty in person, thought it was kinda meh. But then saw the last episode of S2 and liked it, so I ended up watching all of S3. Was pretty entertaining.
Can't say that I'm particularly happy with Sherlock's portrayal in this show, but it's mostly because the actor has annoying face. Kind of got used to it after a while, but still don't like it. As for character he's fine, especially when gets somewhat dorky or self-centered and arrogant, it's cute. Can't compare to the character in book cause it's been like 10 years since I read it. Watson's actor uses exactly the same gestures and body language he uses for Bilbo, looks weird. Really like Sherlock's brother as a character and his interactions with Sherlock.

Gee. S1 ep1 and S2 ep1 were some of the best eps.

End of s2 and end of s3 were good though. But I'd put them below the former.

Finished off Season 3 just now, been watching them at 1 week intervals. S3's villain is a suitably creepy douche and while I was expecting Mycroft to just shoot the bastard after he revealed that killing him would solve everything, it was a nice twist that Sherlock did it. The stinger at the end was indeed shocking, not sure how you can survive blowing your own brains out, but maybe Henderson was right in Moriarty having some kind of face-mask on a duplicate or something.

Of course, this is also a Moriarty without his crime network, if Sherlock did in fact dismantle it as he claims, so he could be even more dangerous with nothing to lose. S3 was a little too comedy and not enough case-solving in my opinion but it did have lots of character development and stuff.

Honestly, I found the "it's all in his mental palace" quite difficult to digest and really silly. Because unless I missed something, there is no way he would have survived that long with blackmailing all those people if he indeed didn't have a single thing in the real world.
