There is also the fact that kittens still behave roughly the same, regardless of their size. Adult felines in the core behave alike, but differ in size. Dogs vs foxes is more complicated issue since fox kit and adult foxes display different behavior from their distant cousins. A wolf still has more in common with a domesticated dog than with a fox.
My two cents on the topic... I don't mind foxes being split off in their own thread. Because I'm in this thread looking for pretty pictures, I'm more concerned about what they look like rather than their phylogeny. That's the one thing that has sometimes bugged me about various dog threads and other sites with dog pictures is the dog body form is so variable that you have your chihuahuas to malamutes to bulldogs, and I can't say I'm necessarily fond of all breeds despite them all being dogs which are capable of interbreeding. Cats have this to a degree as well, but not nearly as much...
Foxes are distinct enough in my mind from a purely aesthetic point of view that I do not see them as dogs. My scientific mind and training may say one thing, but when I'm looking at pictures to coo over, it sometimes shuts off :P.

Again, why we didn't domesticate fennec? They are small enough to not be bane of cats and Yorkshire teriers, so I could keep a one and not worry about my cat.
They are cutest of foxes.
