I don't think there are any changes between the movies and the series except for a greater familiarity with some of the side characters. Like Hayato, Kai and the kids. And maybe some more of the animosity between Char and Amuro.

Did you watch Ao Haru Ride? One Week Friends is also good. If you want something comfy, Shirayuki is great.
There's also 5 Centimetres per Second, if an animated film qualifies. Also seconding ef as a pretty good romance anime, although the second season isn't quite as good (the VN was in some ways the opposite, with the second half being stronger overall).
