Saw Your Name for the fist time tonight. It was a nice movie. Really pretty. It felt like it was meant to be a short series rather than a single film. Like there was one too many montages.

And then I decided to put off A Silent Voice and watch something stupid instead so I binged the first season of the Highschool DxD dub. It's got some issues with the translation messing up lore, but it has the snappy feel of the Ghost Stories dub.

Well, the way I do it is we all have the same [legally acquired copies] on our computers and we synch up our players using synchplay so that it's for sure we're all on the exact same spot in the film. That way in case someone needs to take a piss, we all don't have to do the awkward individual pausing and having to try and start up again at around the same times.

Highschool DxD dub

I'll be honest, the idea of that series going anywhere but in a terrible novel translation... well, I hate using the word, but the idea makes me cringe.

I can't imagine what the poor voice actor who did Issei had to do.

Honestly, the Boobies!! bit is one of the things that really improves in the dub. Instead of having him say Oppai every three seconds, they go really hard on colloquialisms. The voice cast also knows when they're doing shonen battle stuff and play it straight, and when they're doing dumb harem shenanigans and they get way more snarky. The only weird choice is that they turn Akeno from an Ojou to a valley girl.

Also, I got around to watching A Silent Voice. Holy shit, is that a fucking great movie. Not as visually stunning as Your Name, but damn does it have way more fleshed out characters and story. 11/10, will buy the moment I see it in a store. I can't gush about it enough.

That sounds a lot better than what I was thinking. Thank the heavens for decent directors, I guess.

Wow, B: the Beginning is a mess. It's not even a fun mess like Cross Ange. It's two completely different grim dark shows that they just cut together to make it a full series. Like, I could easily see them doing the crazy magic plotline as a stand alone and then have the gritty detective story be a spinoff second season. Or Vise Versa. Just together it kind of ruins everything. All the good characters are in the less relevant storyline, so it also gets the most time devoted to it. It's like "hey, let's find this serial killer" while cutting away to amnesiac shapeshifting clone angels.

Also the theme of the angel people is the guitar riff from digimon during digivolution.

In other news, I just finished Psyren. Fun little run, though it seems to have a lot of hipster hype going for it. It entertained without ever truly surprising me or blowing me away, but people heap praise on it as the "hidden gem" of shounen simply because it's obscure. Kudos to the author for salvaging as much as he did out of his deadline to wrap the whole thing up, but you can almost see the exact moment his editors told him to zip through the Scourge battles to get to the endgame and started browbeating him to introduce weird, fan bait stuff like Abyss, the flirty dark-skinned babe who seems handmade to draw in readers. It's no coincidence that this turns the ice cold heroine into a shy, bumbling moeblob to appeal to that crowd. God, I hated everything about the Abyss sub-plot. A total waste of time when the series didn't have much time to spare.

Still, a lot of the psi powers were pretty cool, and each member of the cast played their part in a satisfying way. There was no fat on that story. I'd recommend it. It won't turn anyone upside down, but you could conceivably power through its 145 chapters in a weekend marathon.

Now I'm tempted to give other cancelled series like MX0 or Double Arts a try. I know I'm setting myself up for disappointment, but I'm curious to see if any of those can wrap themselves up as competently as Psyren did. Of course, for every Psyren, there's a Bleach.

Something that always saddened me about Psyren was that it looked Ageha was going to go into a really fascinating morally ambiguous direction after the fight with poison dude, and then the bloodstained axe of Shonen Jump swung down, lopping off that development forever.

Now I'm remembering how cool Melchsee's Door was. Sniper Mode! Disc Mode! Pac Man Mode! Nebula Mode! If Parasyte can get animated 20 years later, then Psyren still has a chance...
