Shirou's rationale is pretty simple, it's just "no-one else but me should do anything, because it's my job to take care of everyone else at my own expense". Nothing sexist about that....
It did give off that sort of feeling, didn't it? Originally, it was going to be set in the Good end of UBW, Saber and all. Of course, it was also originally meant for TMLC, but that didn't happen either.
I suppose now there isn't really a specific route it's after, though Fate would be the simplest to explain away.
