    Ga Rei: Exodus Nine (IC)

    ???
    Unknown
The Sound of the First Trumpet

"Father, the Summoning Vessel is complete."

Shrouded in the darkness, a man jerked to attention at those words; words he had been waiting eight years to hear. His hair was grey, and the lines on his face made it clear that he was no newcomer to this world, that he had seen and done many things in his life.

    "And the girl?"

His voice carried no emotion, but the weight behind the question was clear.

    There would be no mistakes.

    There would be no flaws.

Something like this was far too important to lose at the very beginning...

"She returned to her room quietly. There was no trouble."

Closing his eyes, the man nodded, his head resting on his closed hand.

"Well then, we've done all we can," standing now, the grey haired man stepped past his daughter, "There is no more need to worry... After all-"

Standing out in the garden now, the golden glow of the morning sun illuminating his features, the man smiled, looking up at someone who was surely watching over him.

"-This world was always destined to change."

    --Day 0//New Aoyoma--
    "An End to the Ordinary."

    Koga Ran (Hero)
    New Aoyoma, Memorial
    Evening

Survivors of the incident had never liked this place, even after eight years had passed.

Three stone tablets, covered with the names of those who had died in the "Great Fire," and erected in the center of a neighborhood that had once been completely destroyed, were the only remaining signs of the tragedy that had never quite left your mind. The names of your parents weren't on any of the stones, in fact, none of the names of any of the exorcists were on the stones, and they never would be.

Exorcists had always lived in the darkness, and so too did they die.

Turning your gaze to the sky, the memories leave you as you close your eyes.

    They were late.

While it was difficult to say if you would have ever come here of your own free will, a call from a government official, some eccentric nut who had worked with your parents in the past, had landed you yet another job as a freelancing exorcist. It wasn't a very complicated assignment; you were simply supposed to transport some items from here, to a sealing specialist at the edge of the city. Why the man felt the need to have so many people bounce the items around before reaching their destination was beyond you, but you supposed it had something to do with secrecy, of not being tracked to a certain location, or to avoid certain people showing up in places they shouldn't but...

In this line of work, it was often best not to ask questions if you wanted more jobs in the future.

    Still...

It was apparently important enough that they had assigned someone else to come along with you and guard the items. A young woman, a little bit younger than you, if the photo had been anything to go by, and apparently quite powerful...

She still hadn't shown up, but you were actually pretty early, so it wasn't a matter of her being late...

    "Come on, Nee-san,"
the voice of a young, dark-haired boy, piercing through the quiet rumbling of the reborn Aoyoma, caught your attention, "I wanna come with you!"

And the person he was talking to...

"No Akio," voice tired, the silver haired woman that was your temporary ally as an exorcist, smiled as she kept walking, "Your mother would kill me if I showed you my job... Go play with your sister for awhile, alright?"

    "But-"

"No buts," waving in a final, dismissive manner, she pointed towards a young blue haired girl, who had been watching from a distance, "I'll take you with me next time, okay? After I convince your mom," the look that flashed across her face at this statement made it clear that such a task was monumental, "Both you and Hitomi, I promise."

    "Fine, I guess..."

It was such an odd scene, watching someone who apparently existed as a high-ranking exorcist acting so much like a normal person, that for a brief moment you thought it was the wrong girl, but-

    "...Are you Koga-san?"

She had marched over to you at a surprising speed before you could even think to check the photo again. The smile she had possessed while interacting with the boy was gone, replaced by completely serious eyes that never left your face.

    ...It was vaguely uncomfortable.

She gave the impression of looking straight through people...

Perhaps a straight answer would be best?

    New Aoyoma, 'Brewed Awakenings'
    Evening

The first thing you could confirm about this place was that it was, in fact, haunted. A small coffee shop near the outskirts of New Aoyoma, it was normally not the sort of thing that would draw your attention, but certain sites, dedicated to stories of the occult, had begun to talk about this place as if it had been the real thing. Moving shadows in the bathrooms, invisible hands moving things around in the back, a foreign store owner who seemed to be the only actual employee in the store...

There were a lot of stories like this on the site, haunted railroad tracks, stories about burial grounds, or bridges haunted by the spirits of those who had thrown themselves off of their heights, so there really wasn't much there that had stood out to you.

Until, one of the older, more knowledgeable members, who went by the name of "Luna," had declared the place as a legitimate haunting ground. "Luna," who claimed to be some sort of scientist by trade (you believed she had said bio-medical engineer, but you honestly hadn't been paying much attention) had only ever posted on the forum to disprove the stories that other put forward. Her arguments were always clear, concise, and most importantly, accurate. While few people were aware of the actual mechanisms of spiritual beings, her arguments fit with what both you and Suzume knew about ghosts, and she even seemed to know about things that you didn't, speaking of shamanistic customs, as well as the proper way of handling something called a "Killing Stone," which she had apparently come into possession of recently.

Her membership to the site was apparently just a hobby for her, but when "Luna" spoke, the forum listened.

And according to the post she had made about fifteen minutes ago, this place was legit. Harmless. But legit.

You had nothing better to do, and it was something happening in your town, so you had decided to look into it, for the purpose of exorcism practice if nothing else.

    But this...

"Customers?" A smile crossing her face, the young woman behind the counter seemed genuinely happy to see you, a tinge of excitement in her voice, "I was starting to think I'd only get one today..."

While her Japanese was good, there was a definite American accent behind her words. She was smiling at the both of you, a name tag reading "Liane" pinned to the front of her uniform, and while a lot of people you had met gave off false emotions, she seemed to be wearing her sincere feelings of excitement on her sleeve.

    Even so...

You couldn't blame anyone for not coming here.

After all, there were more ghosts in here than there were people. Some were sitting in the chairs, staring at you silently, while others had their eyes glued to one of the many television set that had been suspended from the ceiling. Even though they couldn't see them, even spiritually unaware humans will avoid places like this one out of instinct. Other than the woman behind the counter, the only other person here was a blue haired woman on a laptop, and as she was swatting away any spirits that came near her with her left arm, you figured that she was more or less aware of what kind of place this was. Because she wasn't facing you, you could see the familiar background of the forum...

    Was it Luna?

Like she had said, this was a legitimate haunted area...

And they all seemed to be E-Class... So they were more or less harmless...

In the window that allowed one to peek into the kitchen, you could see the spirits of humans casually cleaning the place with varied expressions. Some were smiling, while others looked bored or simply stoic. There was no way the owner, who as the sole employee would have to make the coffee on her own, would be unaware of the things happening in the back, so judging by her complete lack of reaction to any of it, it was pretty likely that she was some sort of psychic too...

There was something weird going on here...

    Evening

It had been a long time since you had come to this place.

The crowds were the same, countless people moving along their own scheduled lives, repeating the same thing over and over again. For you, someone who was a newcomer in this rebuilt city, it felt like you were quite out of place.

Still, you were here to look for your brother, and being back in the place where it had all happened, or at least, being close to the place, felt like a giant step forward for you.

The promise of eight years would be fulfilled soon, you had no doubt.

Taking a step forward, you moved towards the stairs leading up to the main streets of the entertainment district, when-

    "Ah, excuse me, sorry!"

Someone bumped into you, throwing you off balance, before disappearing into the crowd at a brisk pace, pushing past others in the same recklessly rushed way she had gotten past you.

You hadn't had time to stop her even if you had wanted to, and while it was a bit rude, it wasn't uncommon for people to sprint through the subway in order to make their appointments on time, so with a shrug, you put it off as just a random event, and moved to start up the stairs once more.

You were probably going to be in town for awhile, so you needed to find a place to stay, some sort of hotel. Being Tokyo, this was probably going to be a bit harder than you would like, but you were sure you would be able to find something before the day ended-

    "Ah hey, you!"

Before you could even get up a single stair, someone else called out to you. He looked young, about your age, and there was a long bound item in his hands, wrapped up in some sort of fabric, like he was carrying around a poster.

"Did a girl run past here?" His voice slightly rushed, his eyes remained clear and sharp despite his obvious fatigue, "About my height, black hair, your age?"

While the last of those descriptions was a bit odd, it brought to mind the girl that had passed by a few moments ago.

But she had looked sorta rushed... Maybe she was running from someone...?

    This guy?

While it was a pretty suspicious situation, whether or not to answer was up to you.

    New Aoyoma, Entertainment District
    Evening

"...And lo, the ones chosen for the ordeal return!"

Gatherings like this were getting more and more common.

While those who lived in the rebuilt Aoyoma were the type who had a certain tolerance for weird events, no one ever quite seemed able to ignore the gatherings of the group known as the Order of Eden. All dressed all in dark blue robes, with their faces shadowed by their hoods, they were a group whose motivations were hard to discern, and were inherently suspicious but for some reason or another they were starting to grow oddly popular... Or at least, popular enough that you had gotten stuck in the crowd on your way home from helping a classmate with a light haunting. It had been innocent curiosity at first, the man who was speaking now, standing behind a podium in front of the silent crowd, had possessed quite the charismatic voice, the type that all religious leaders seemed to inherit.

And in one way or another, you had somehow ended up in the middle of a crowd that had formed in seconds, a crowd that was still growing even as you stood there, non-robed stragglers, people like you who had stopped just to watch for a moment, but who were slowly getting sucked into the event.

"It has been eight long years since the time of the darkness, but the order has grown in that time! Soon, we shall become a light that pierces that same darkness! A light that will reclaim paradise!"

While the things he said were rather odd, it was easy to tell that the man was passionate about what he was saying, and the robed ones around you, who were still oddly silent, lowered their heads at the end of his every sentence.

"For tonight, as well as for the next nine days, those who have been chosen by God will gather here in Tokyo. Those marked by the trial, as well as those who believe... All are welcome to take part. Believe in the Lord, and prepare for the ordeal. Prepare for the return of the Tree of Light and the Black Beast, and that is when we shall-"

The speech was going on and on, with no signs of stopping, and you hadn't really planned on being out here that long, so you momentarily thought of just pushing your way through the crowd, but-

"And look, a child of the trial is among us!"

    ...A child of the trial?

It wasn't the sort of statement that would normally stop you, but-

Tell me young one, are you prepared? it will happen soon."

-You were suddenly the center of attention, the hooded figures around you having turned you way... And their leader was talking to you, the piercing feeling of his gaze resting on the back of your skull.

You had no idea what he was talking about, and a part of you wanted to leave simply because being surrounded like this seemed incredibly unsafe. But at the same time...

    Ordeal.

    Child of trial.

    Something happening soon.

What exactly had he meant by those things?

If something like what had happened eight years ago was going to happen again...

To leave or to ask questions...

There was a definite appeal to both.

    Watanabe Tomoya (Morm)
    New Aoyoma, 'For Pete's Sake'
    Evening

You had heard and seen a lot of things in your life, but the talk of vampires was new.

Silently cleaning a glass, the usual people beginning to make their way to the bar in the orange light of the evening sun, you couldn't help but overhear the conversation taking place at a table near you.

"The vampire murders?" A young looking woman, definitely still a teenager (she had admitted to being underage right at the start) sipped at the soda in front of her, eying the man across from her with a vague look of disbelief, "Don't you think saying it's a vampire is a bit out there? It's probably just some kind of freak. No need to drag hocus pocus into things... Reality is scary enough on it's own."

"The bodies were completely drained of blood Maiya," her conversation partner, a boy around her age, seemed determined to convince her, "No blood stains at the scene. Nothing in the bathtub or the other rooms. Just a drained body, in a locked room, with no signs of forced entry. Vampire."

"Right. Definitely no leaps of logic there..."

For kids, they were discussing a pretty serious topic, playing detective, (as teens with attitude tended to do these days) but it wasn't anything you hadn't heard before in the few weeks you had been back in the city. There were rumors of all sorts of crazy things going on in the Yamanote Circle, although most of the rumors seemed to center here, in the newest section of the city.

People who could start fires with their minds, or run up walls.

    Monsters living under bridges.

And now vampires were apparently the next big thing, but-

"Come on, don't be so cold," his expression one of hurt feelings, the boy said something that brought your absentminded cleaning motions to a stop, "Didn't they find a few other people that way? I know there was one at least... What was his name... Watanabe Jotaro?"

    Your father's name.

The details had never been released to you, just news of his murder. Not the exact method, or the way the body had been found, nothing...

    But this kid-

"Was there? I didn't hear anything about that on the news...? Did your dad tell you that?" Sounding exasperated, the girl sighed, "Is this classified information Kenji? It might be alright for you to know because you're the police chief's son, but don't tell me stuff that's gonna get me arrested alright? I really don't want to go to jail."

"They won't arrest you for it. I swear!"

This kid seemed to know something.

It could be a bluff. Lord knows the people you had already talked to had just made stuff up to make you feel better, but this kid seemed pretty convinced...

Maybe you could ask? You were already doing them a favor by letting them hang out in here, and if you explained who you were... Well, the kid couldn't be heartless.

Then again... It might be best to just let this sort of thing go.

That was it's own form of closure. Your father was already dead and buried, chasing his killer wouldn't bring him back.

    Amamiya Mashiro (Ziodyne)
    New Aoyoma, Mashiro's House
    Evening

Waking up, no matter the time, was like being reborn for someone like you.

Opening your eyes to unfamiliar surroundings, moving your body off of a bed that didn't feel like yours. Even the smell of cooking, something that brought about primal memories and urges, was something that you only recognized through a vague haze.

But this was how everyday worked for you, or at least, you got the feeling that this was how everyday worked out for you, so it wasn't something that you were particularly surprised to be experiencing. The light of the evening sun bathing the door gold, you stepped out of the room and down the stairs, passing by pictures of people you could not recall, even though they were your own flesh and blood.

For you, the concept of memory was something rare, something to be treasured.

The unfamiliar stairs opened up to an unfamiliar living room, and from there, to an unfamiliar kitchen.

The woman at the stove was vaguely familiar, some distant aunt perhaps, or a cousin, but the young man sitting at the table was someone whose name you couldn't recall, but whose profession stuck out in your mind, like a vague echo finally bouncing off the wall of eight years.

    Detective.

"Good evening, Amamiya-san," his voice was smooth and emotionless, the voice of a man who remained completely detached from the world around him, "It's been quite some time, hasn't it?"

This man, someone who hadn't changed at all in eight years.

Someone who was there at the time of the incident.

The detective who had appeared at the scene on that day, on the one night you could remember clearly.

"Do you remember who I am?" A small smile on his face, the man seemed nonplussed at your silence, "You were still a kid back then, and it was a shocking incident, so it's understandable if you forgot about me. But something was left at my office this morning that I believe was meant for you... Of course, I know it's a harsh topic for you, so I can dispose of it if you want?"

    A blast from the past.

    Something that felt clear.

    A memory...

    A lead?

Whether to accept it or not was up to you.
    Exodus (Complete)

Even if the author is silenced, the performance is stilled and the actors leave the stage, the story will never truly end.

Regardless of the form it takes, as long as there are memories of it's existence, the story will continue on.

In a small ward in the heart of a once devastated town, life carries on as it always has...

    Because of you.

    Please, remember it warmly.

We'll continue to walk down this path for eternity.

    Watanabe Tomoya
    New Aoyama, "For Pete's Sake"
    Evening

I'd started setting up a bit early this evening, Jacques meandering in when I was about halfway finished, he seemed a bit surprised, for good reason, I'd usually let him handle it, but I was in a bit of an industrious mood this evening. Together, we'd finished up the rest in about 12 minutes, tables going up, chairs out, lights on, a bit of quiet music in the background, apparently it was blues night.

I settled back and did the tried and true bartender time waster, glass polishing, the early arrivals wandering in a bit at a time, a couple of salarymen, bleary-eyed and already hitting the harder stuff, (I'd taken the liberty of watering it down a tad) a couple of kids, who I fixed with a stern look as they asked for some soda, which I grudgingly got out.

I'm a sucker for honesty, what can I say.

The early evening was always a bit quiet, slow to start, but it'd start picking up before too long. Business was good here in this part of town, sure, it was no downtown Los Angeles, like the first iteration of "For Pete's Sake", but it did alright for itself. I had a couple of part-timers, Jacques being the early arrival, but I liked handling a lot of the work myself, it's sort of a blue-collar thing, y'know.

The usual chatter went around, gripes about work, the economy, life, a couple of students in the corner murmuring about an upcoming test, eyes a bit bloodshot. But what really caught my attention were the kids just a few feet away from me.

"The vampire murders? Don't you think saying it's a vampire is a bit out there? It's probably just some kind of freak. No need to drag hocus pocus into things... Reality is scary enough on it's own."

A young lady, probably somewhere in her late teens, seemed a bit skeptical of her rumor-mongering friend, who went on doggedly: ""The bodies were completely drained of blood, Maiya. No blood stains at the scene. Nothing in the bathtub or the other rooms. Just a drained body, in a locked room, with no signs of forced entry. Vampire."

Vampires, hm? Well, there were certainly a few kooks running around, plus, well, it wasn't out of the question for someone or something to have abilities that, ahem, exceeded the ordinary man.

I flexed my hand a bit, trying to get at one stubborn spot of something that refused to be cowed by the power of washing machines. The pair of kids chattered on in the background, there were always crazy rumors running around, people breathing fire, flying, running up walls, smashing through walls, Monsters lurking in the darkness, ghosts haunting the sites of their deaths.

I usually heard a lot of those, bars seemed to attract all sorts of interesting chatter, kind of like coffee houses, but with less condescension and more dick jokes.

I swear to god, if I find another dickbutt in the bathroom, I'm putting a camera in there.

"Come on, don't be so cold, Didn't they find a few other people that way? I know there was one at least... What was his name... Watanabe Jotaro?"

    I froze.

    'Dad... he's dead.'

The voice of my younger brother quietly echoed in the back of my mind. I'd originally come back for the funeral, out of duty, and I'd moved my business over to keep Mom company, Josuke being off at college.

But I'd recently had to admit to myself, I was angry, I wanted to hit something when I'd found out, the old man was too stubborn to just die, and someone'd killed him, an ordinary man, stubborn as an ox and a millon times as tough, but he wasn't anything out of the ordinary.

    And someone had murdered him.

"Was there? I didn't hear anything about that on the news...? Did your dad tell you that? Is this classified information, Kenji? It might be alright for you to know because you're the police chief's son, but don't tell me stuff that's gonna get me arrested alright? I really don't want to go to jail."

I quietly set the glass down, looking straight at them.

"They won't arrest you for it. I swear!"

I moved over a bit towards the two of them, "Hey, mind going on a bit more about the rumor? I'm a friend of Watanabe's family, and I've been poking my nose around a bit, trying to figure out what happened."

“It reeks of the stagnant souls of the damned, wandering eternally in their suffering as they search for their path to the next life. How pitiful.” A slender hand swatted away a stray ghost hovering above a head of long, black hair tied into a ponytail by a white ribbon. Two large, red eyes, obviously colored by contacts that were worn solely for the purpose of fashion, looked up at the stray ghost with obvious disdain. “No child blessed with the gift of life would ever willingly choose to visit a store stained by the pungent stench of the dead just to drink the bitter sludge of alacrity.”

Saki Ryuumonbuchi lifted her hand to her face, covering her right eye as if to conceal a part of herself, and looked over the coffee shop in full.

“No, even that dark liquid would fail to invigorate the mind and body when contaminated by these lost spirits!” Saki exclaimed boisterously, heaving her chest up and down as she began to cackle ominously, as if to present her as an ominous figure laughing down at her victims, the ghosts. That image however failed to form as the girl’s loosened tie flopped around over her chest, calling to attention her poorly dressed state. The girl’s school uniform looked as if it had been thrown on her in a hurry, jacket open and unbuttoned, shirt wrinkled and creased all over. A solid black tie with a single white arrow flailed wildly from her neck, intentionally loosened to give her more comfort, as well as solidifying her sloppy appearance. A red skirt matching the unbuttoned jacket fell down to her knees, perhaps the only part of her uniform that looked mildly cared for.

"Customers?" A smile crossing her face, the young woman behind the counter seemed genuinely happy to see you, a tinge of excitement in her voice, "I was starting to think I'd only get one today..."
“Thank your lucky stars, master of this sludge shop! I, Saki Ryuumonbuchi, and my lord, the Reader of Hearts, have come to save your tiny shop and cleanse it of the lost spirits that roam it!” Lowering her hand, Saki spread her fingers out above her mouth as she began to cackle even more. “Isn’t that right, my lord?”

    This is awkward.

Kind of strange place. Haunted definitely, but not in a way that is interesting to us, well, not interesting in the way that we expected at least. Certainly not something you see every day.

“It reeks of the stagnant souls of the damned, wandering eternally in their suffering as they search for their path to the next life. How pitiful.”
    "Yeah."

I just answer in the affirmative. Better not interrupt her when she's going on like this, and it's not like anybody seems to mind, yet at least. Sometimes I have to remind myself that the way she talks is abnormal in the first place. After a while you just start filtering it for the information she tries to convey.

“No child blessed with the gift of life would ever willingly choose to visit a store stained by the pungent stench of the dead just to drink the bitter sludge of alacrity.”
"These two don't seem to be possessed or anything though..." Might not be too apparent on a first look, but considering the strength of these spirits I'd be surprised. Don't seem too aggressive either, no killing intent, nothing.

Harmonious systems, if it really was one, were rare. Spirits had different outlooks on life, or well, unlife. Conflicting ideas that, even outside of ill intent made living together in peace difficult or even impossible.

I push a streak of hair out of my face. A difficult task to accomplish without poking my eye in with a talisman. Four bracelets covered my arm. One with a talisman for good health, one with one for getting a boyfriend (Saki gets really upset when I don't carry her gifts wit me), one for success in school and one with a bell that made no sound.

One would have to be very diplomatic in such a situation. Kind of like fetching something from a hornet's nest, you don't really want to provoke anybody.

The slightest display of hostility or disturbance of the balance could...

“Thank your lucky stars, master of this sludge shop! I, Saki Ryuumonbuchi, and my lord, the Reader of Hearts, have come to save your tiny shop and cleanse it of the lost spirits that roam it! Isn’t that right, my lord?
    Aaaaaaah, kut!

"Actually we just uh...we heard about this place. Doesn't seem to be a problem here, so maybe we should just leave?"

The train raced through the underground tunnels of Tokyo, getting closer to its next destination. Reliable as always, the Ginza Line had been the first to be repaired after the Minato ward suffered extensive damage from the incident eight years ago. At that time though, every nook and cranny of the cramped subterranean tunnels had been inspected and restored, but one used to the metro line of old would still have felt that something had changed.

For William, though, it was the same cramped line he had taken that fateful day with his family. Even amidst the suffocating masses of people that surrounded him, he felt nostalgic. His eyes watched the subterranean lights go by, as the faint whispering of people echoed in the background. A small smile was in his face, even though this place had once been the site of a tragedy that had affected many, including himself.

"Ugh... This train is so full! Can't... breathe..." A small child grimaced with a sick expression as he pulled through the throngs of people that were busily arranging themselves under whatever space was left in the crowded train. Behind him followed a young couple, staring at him with worry and excusing themselves past other people.

A small chuckle followed the boy's comment, as a hand lowered itself on his head and started ruffling the child's black locks. "It's pretty crowded, isn't it? But don't you think it's fun, Will? So many people here, it's almost like we're in Black Friday!"

William looked up at his brother's face with a crooked smile. "I guess... I don't hear any loud screaming though, Gabe. Are you sure it's not just a bunch of people sticking around?"

"Well..." Gabriel was about to answer, when he was interrupted by a loud scream, making William's eyebrows shoot up suddenly. The two of them turned around, just in time to see as a woman relentlessly assaulted an older man with her purse, cursing and shouting incoherently.

    The two started to laugh.

William blinked as his phone started ringing, and excused himself as he picked up the small device. "Hello?" He whispered in english, drawing curious stares from the people besides him.

He winced as the voice behind the other line greeted him loudly, but then his eyes closed warmly as he smiled. "Yes, Mom. I'm doing fine. No, I didn't forget my luggage- Yes, I'm near New Aoyama already, though I'm still in the subway."

After a few minutes of quiet chatting, William hung up with a small "Bye" and sighed. His parents were very worried about him going back to Tokyo, but he had repeatedly assured them he would be fine. Since he'd expressed his desire to return someday, they had always dreaded this day- but that was fine with William.

He understood their love, and accepted it. But, it was because of that very love that William had come to this place- Their bond as family was tight, but he could tell that their sadness had still not healed.

-So that he could see them smile as brightly as before, he had come to collect his silly brother where he had left him. He knew that he was still here- He couldn't explain it well, but ever since that day something within him had changed. Somehow, a potential he had never known he possessed had awoken inside him.

And if he could possess such potential... Then too, his brother possessed a potential of that caliber. It was natural to assume this- That was just how the bond that linked them was.

The potential for Hope... Gabriel definitely was the owner of such a thing.

"Next Stop: Omotesando Station... Next Stop: Omotesando Station..." A robotic voice chimed, shaking William out of his reverie. The train started to slow down as the lights became fainter and fainter, replaced by even brighter light from further ahead.

Smiling as the station grew closer, William shifted the bag balanced over his shoulder.

After eight long years, he could finally start his search. For better or worse, the promise between brothers would be fulfilled at last.

    ---

    ...But... Where to begin?

William paused while taking the stairs out of the station, a blank smile on his face as realization washed over him. He had come to New Aoyama, but he hadn't even made a plan for places to start looking for. Could it be, I'm actually an idiot...? Beads of sweat ran down his head as he realized he should've thought more about where to stay and where to start.

However, the young man quickly recovered. So maybe he had forgotten to organize his search properly, but that was fine right? Even if he had forgotten, the bonds that connected him to Gabriel would surely guide him to his brother! It was only a matter of time to wait for a sign-

    -At that moment.

    "Ah, excuse me, sorry!"

"Ooof!" William was caught off-guard by a flash of black hair that rushed past him. As it turned midway to look at him, he managed to capture the person's face as she continued to excuse herself past the other people.

William's eyes widened as the girl disappeared behind the crowd of people. What had that been? Perhaps, had that been... William shook his head. No, that wasn't likely. Too many people rushed past subway stations when they had an appointment to take. Deciding to shrug off the event as nothing more than a passing incident, he was about to continue to make his way up the stairs-

    "Ah hey, you!"

But in a flash, a voice interrupted him. William turned to the other person, and his eyes widened. Now there was a sight. Though the man was his age, he was holding a strange item on his hand. At first glance, it looked like a poster, but William wasn't very sure that it was as simple as something like that.

"Did a girl run past here? About my height, black hair, your age?" William's eyebrows shot up. Despite his fatigue, the person before him still remained sharply aware of his own surroundings. It wasn't like William himself was an expert fighter or anything, but he knew that at least some martial discipline was required to be able to ignore fatigue like that while addressing somebody.

William shivered. At that moment, he felt that this might be it. Even though the person before him might not be related to his brother, there was no doubt that this encounter was odd, and that it was real. Such an event, couldn't one even call it something orchestrated by fate?

    Fate...

William turned to address the man. "Yeah, I think so. She looked in a pretty big hurry, getting out of the station like that." As William said this, smiling, the muscles in his legs tightened as he braced himself.

Though he was no person to judge, there was no denying that the event happening before him was suspicious. With how close the girl and the person before him looked, they could even be brothers- But William had already involved himself by revealing where the girl had gone. If this action somehow ended up having dark consequences for the girl herself... William would no doubt regret it.

That was why, he would kill two birds with one stone- If Fate had brought this encounter to him, then it was natural for him to seize it. The bonds that he would make would guide him through, and lead to him to the destiny his own hands would forge.

That was why, while he revealed this to the fellow teen, he was also preparing himself to follow after him. While any normal person would have a hard time following people in a crowded city like Tokyo, William was not any normal person- And hell, while he followed this lead, he might as well look out for interesting hotels he could stay in.

Even if there was no need for him to go so out of his way... He could not help but follow the path of the bonds that fate decided to form on its own.

    Watanabe Tomoya
    New Aoyama, "For Pete's Sake"
    Evening

In the end, the desire to know the truth had driven you to inquire further.

"A friend of the Watanabe's?" His eyes widening, the boy's expression quickly turned to one of excitement, even as his friend narrowed her eyes at him, "Yeah, sure, I can talk about it for a bit, it's just a rumor after all."

Taking a sip from the glass in front of him, a small smile on his face, it quickly became apparent that the boy got a certain delight out of people listening to him talk, but there was an intelligent spark in his eyes that made his semi-childish enthusiasm with the topic seem a bit more surreal than it should have.

"Have you been paying attention to the weather recently?" talking quickly, the sound of the girl sighing was buried under his words, "It's normally all sunshine and cloudless skies, but every once in awhile it gets kinda foggy in parts of the city for a couple of days, right? You know, that weird black fog?"

    So it was Miasma.

The only 'black fog' given off in this city was that given off by vengeful spirits. To humans it looked a bit like fog, but to people like you, it was a fog that was stained black.

And if the kid could see it... Well, he wasn't exactly normal then...

"Well whenever that happens, someone is found dead in a hotel room, or a back alley, their bodies drained and empty, the sort of stuff you'd see in a horror movie, you know? Things like wallets and purses were left on the victims, so the police have been saying it's the work of a serial killer... Someone who doesn't actually want anything but the kill, but if that's the case, why drain the bodies? And not only why, but where did they drain the bodies? They never find any at the murder scenes, and with how long it would take to drain a body, you'd figure someone would have caught them doing it, right?"

He was rambling now, and people at the other tables were starting to look over at you, to Maiya's eternal discomfort, but you didn't stop him.

"That Watanabe Jotaro guy's case was no different at first. Black fog around his neighborhood, and he was dead the next morning. But in his case, unlike the others, there was signs of a struggle. He didn't go down without a fight, and his cell phone was in his hand, but destroyed, so we're hoping to see if he got a picture of his attacker, but it's probably not going to work out."

Finishing off his glass with a sigh, the teen's eyes grew serious.

"Still, Watanabe Tomoya-san," voice emotionless now, the dark-haired young man made it clear he knew who you were, "I've heard it's going to be foggy in this area tonight."

    Suzume Oshino & Saki Ryuumonbochi
    New Aoyoma, 'Brewed Awakenings'
    Evening

"Master of the sludge shop...? Reader of Hearts?"

Her voice perplexed, the young store owner simply stared at the two of you in silence for a moment, her eyes active and lit as if she was trying to figure out whether or not you were serious about this particular brand of conversation.

    "...I see, I see."

Nodding her head twice after the awkward pause, she put her leg up on the stool behind the counter, and resting her arm upon her knee, smiled a mischievous smile that spelled out her emotions completely.

"Master of the sludge shop? No, my dear Child of the Spirits, I am the Master of the Dark Spark. The Brewer of Life, the Queen of Clarity!"

It was impossible to tell if she was making fun of you, if she was actually like this on a daily basis, or if she had just decided to play along with it, but she seemed to be having fun with it...

"Of course, such a misreading is to be expected... The two of you are new here, so you have yet to see my true power..."

    Yep.

She was definitely having fun with it.

"The little ones who gathered here were afraid of something in this city, as well as the perils of the next world, so I allowed them to stay near me so long as they would help maintain my domain," her smile faltering, a sudden crack in her armor appeared with her next words, "Of course, they are not the best companions when one seeks to open trade routes with citizens, and one of them freaks out every now and then and starts breaking things, but hey... It can't be helped."

While that mess of a speaking style had made the information slightly more difficult to obtain than it should have been, if what she said was true, it seemed that the spirits here were using this Liane girl as a guard against something in the city.

When you mentioned leaving however, the girl's expression faltered a bit again.

"Ah well, I suppose that's the most normal thing to do, but... I'm really bored," because she was an adult at a store that she apparently owned, it was slightly sad to hear her admit to something like that, "The spirits are finicky, and that woman over there, Nakamura-san, just keeps complaining that the seal I put on the building is messing with her research, but she shouldn't be researching me just because I can get along with ghosts for more than five minutes, eh Megumi?"

The blue haired woman waved a hand dismissively at this passive aggressive shout, and for the first time, you noticed the symbols engraved alongside the inside of the wall...

A spirit seal... No, three of them, a triple seal... Around everything that wasn't the front door.

    Who was this person...?

"But hey, if you're looking for ghost trouble, I guess I could list a few places for you. Although..." Leaning over the counter at you, the girl's eyes narrowed, "Aren't you two a bit young for exorcism work?"

    Koga Ran
    New Aoyoma, Memorial
    Evening

It's been eight years since I last set foot on this city.

Back then, I had no wish to remain in Aoyama after the death of my parents, and I used all the resourses I had available to move somewhere else. I was young and naive, and without the assistance I received from the people who had worked with my family in the past, I wouldn't be standing where I am today. It wasn't easy... But I've have become a strong freelance exorcist worthy of carrying the name of the Koga. I hope that efforts have made my ancestors, who watch from the heavens, proud of me. In their honor, I'll continue to overcome the trials I am fated to meet and defend the name of the Koga, so it can becomes something that cannot be erased with time. As the last survivor of the clan, it is my duty to find a proper suitor and give birth to a strong child so the bloodline doesn't die off. I am afraid that I haven't made much progress in that regard, but I believe that, eventually. I'll come to meet the right person.

Today's job is not quite unlike those I am used to: With the help of Tachibana Kimiko, a high ranking exorcist, I am expected to transport some items to the outskirts of the city. I'm standing at the designated meeting point waiting patiently for both my partner and the package to arrive. The method chosen to move the items from here to the specified goal would raise anyone's suspicions, but I don't have it within myself to question the orders I've been given. If the package is important, then I shall defend it with my life, like any proud Koga would. It's a resolution that comes only natural for me, who belongs to an ancient family of exorcists, specialized in acting as bodyguards. That being said, I was born curious, and part of me cannot help but wonder what exactly shall we be carrying to the edge of the city. Even as an exorcist, emotions are hard to kill, after all...

The noisy demands of a young boy bring my train of thoughts to a halt. He must be ten or perhaps eleven years old... Even from a distance I can tell that both innocence and inexperience hide in his eyes. Kids like this one are a blessing... They seem possess unnatural warmth different from any other. Or, at least, that is what I've have heard and read about. For some reason, even though I am capable of hiding it behind a mask, the presence of boys like him unnerves me... Even more so when I am on duty. I find my gaze focusing on him much more than on his older companion. It's hard to describe... But I feel that if I happen to turn my eyes off him, he might do something incredibly stupid...

Although I can feel her eyes fixed on me as if to evaluate my response, I allow myself not to be intimidated and actually check the picture once more just to be sure that I am dealing with the right person before giving my answer. Without mistake, the one standing in front of me is Tachibana Mayumi.

"Yes. My name is Koga Ran." Making some space, I take the time to bow my head down in respect. "Pleased to be working with you, Tachibana-san."

It would seem that the smile I noticed before has vanished from her face. I can understand that feeling... Each of us has a part of ourselves that we wish not to share with others, and especially not with complete strangers. That conversation I witnessed was part of Tachibana-san's personal space, one that I shall not intrude into.

"Let us wait for the transport to arrive. It should be here shortly."

The kid perks up at my interest, "A friend of the Watanabe's? Yeah, sure, I can talk about it for a bit, it's just a rumor after all."

He had a bit of a grin on his face, kid likes people listening to him talk, and a person of my profession was very good at that, still, he had a bit of a gleam in his eye, made his whole enthusiasm seem a bit weird.

"Have you been paying attention to the weather recently?"

Well yeah, so far it's been pretty nice, not much rain, getting a bit warmer, was thinking about pooling some cash and making a patio, but there's also tha-

"It's normally all sunshine and cloudless skies, but every once in awhile it gets kinda foggy in parts of the city for a couple of days, right? You know, that weird black fog?"

Yeah, that, the 'miasma' or whatever the hell people called it, it's supposed to come out when evil spirits come romping around, causing trouble, if the miasma was connected with the murders, then that meant...

Plus there's the matter that he could see the damn shit, meant he was at least sensitive to that kinda thing; I bumped his credibility up a few steps.

"Well whenever that happens, someone is found dead in a hotel room, or a back alley, their bodies drained and empty, the sort of stuff you'd see in a horror movie, you know? Things like wallets and purses were left on the victims, so the police have been saying it's the work of a serial killer... I dunno kid, it's probably stupid ghost bullshit, plus people are starting to stare, should probably start putting the kibosh on Motor-Mouth's tirade, but I gave him a bit longer to get to the point.

I narrowed my eyes, I suppose I should have guessed it was something like that, any ordinary schmuck would get their shit wrecked tangling with the old man, so some shitty ghosts use ghost bullshit to cheat.

"Still, Watanabe Tomoya-san, I've heard it's going to be foggy in this area tonight."

I puffed out a breath from my nose, a little amused, what'd the girl say he was? Son of the Police Chief? Must've been something like that, I do probably have a few records from back then lying around.

Or this is all a setup and he's about to open his mouth and a huge ghost is going to fly out and be all: "OOGA-BOOGA, IMMA EAT YOU". And then I'm going to have to beat the tar out of it.

Still, looks like I'll be taking a break later tonight.

I absently wonder if the junior varsity's up to it. My face goes slack for a minute as images of monstrous shadow beasts infused with the power of dark liquor burst from behind the bar to devour all well-meaning citizens float through my head.

"That so? Well, certainly hope everyone here gets home safely. Now then, Mr. Detective, Kenji, right? Got anything else? Cause you're kinda freakin people out a little."

    William Levilius
    New Aoyama, Subway
    Evening

Deciding to follow the path fate had set out before you, you instinctively ran after the young man as he broke into a sprint at your words, doing your best to keep your eyes on his figure even as it grew obscured by the growing crowds of people. He was fast, and while his labored manner of breathing was that of someone who had been doing this for awhile, his pace never slowed, and when he couldn't move around someone, he simply went through them with the same reckless abandon that the girl had possessed on her own march through the subway.

For a normal person, it probably would have been impossible to keep up, his movements simply possessed an endurance that would be impossible any normal human to match.

Of course, you were not a normal individual.

    Hadn't been for eight years.

While you weren't right on his heels, you had managed to catch up enough that he was firmly in your line of sight, and off in the distance, just at the edge of your vision, you could even spot the girl from before...

    "Izumi! Damn it...!"

And judging from his reaction, as well as the way he sped up the instant she came into sight, his arms and legs pumping with a speed they should not possess, a large gap opened up between the two of you, and he vanished into a nearby alley, calling the girl's name once more.

When you finally caught back up...

"I'm not here to hurt you Izumi... But we have to go back. It's too dangerous to let you wander around out here..."

It was a scene that looked like trouble.

Her back to the wall, the girl was staring timidly at the young man, who was simply blocking the way out of the alley with his body, his posture wasn't exactly threatening, but it was clear that he wasn't going to let her back out into the street by herself.

    "Nimura-kun, please..."

"I'm sorry... I know it's not fair to you, but as long as your... condition persists, I have to bring you back. We can't risk them finding you... So please come back with me quietly."

Taking a step forward, the girl took a step back in response.

You weren't sure what was going on here, but...

    This Izumi girl seemed frightened...

    William Levilius
    New Aoyama, Subway
    Evening

When William had decided to go to New Aoyama, he had always expected he'd run into something suspicious sooner or later. There were still countless rumours (and many truths as well) that circled around the world about Aoyama's demons, ever since the beast known as the Kyuubi had appeared out of the blue and forever changed their world.

Even so... To have his suspicions confirmed as soon as he got off the subway- Truly, this was the work of fate.

William's eyes widened as the man broke into a sprint as soon as the words left his mouth. Even as he automatically jumped forwards to pursue the man, his mind raced. That speed was not normal. The way he slipped past the crowds of people while keeping the speed of a professional sprinter... There was no way such skill came from a normal life.

This is it... William increased his pace, discarding all notions of normalcy as he attempted to keep up with his target. Spotting the gaps between the thick crowds, William deftly sprinted past them at a speed that would put olympic athletes to shame. This was the gift he had recieved eight years ago- The ability to transcend humanity, to fulfill his promise.

    Even so-

There was no denying the man he was pursuing was impressive. Just what is he...? The man showed signs of fatigue, yet he could push his body to speeds that defied his- And William suspected he was not yet using his full power. Why was a man like him chasing what seemed like an ordinary girl...?

    "Izumi! Damn it...!"

    So that's her name.
As soon as the girl had shown up in William's sight, the man had cried out and pushed his body to even higher speeds. That almost caused William to stumble.

    -! He's fast!

Before William's shocked eyes, the man quickly closed the distance between him and the girl, vanishing into a nearby alley. Evading the crowds of people, he hurried to get to them.

By the time he caught up to them, he could already hear the conversation between the two...

"I'm not here to hurt you Izumi... But we have to go back. It's too dangerous to let you wander around out here..."

    At that moment.

William's heart skipped a beat as he felt it.

'It's too dangerous, William!' 'We don't want the same to happen to you, you can't go back there...!'

-So, that was it. William had made a mistake. There was no such thing as fate, that had led him to this place. The true nature of his guide had been made manifest after the man's line.

-For William could already see them: the bonds that connected this girl to him.

    "Nimura-kun, please..."

The girl looked desperate. She was reluctant to listen to the words of this man, as if they clashed against her reason for being in that place. William understood all too well- To face an opponent who was not an enemy, yet remained an opponent nonetheless.

"I'm sorry... I know it's not fair to you, but as long as your... condition persists, I have to bring you back. We can't risk them finding you... So please come back with me quietly."

William's eyes narrowed sharply, as the girl stepped back in fear from the other man.

    "Hold on."

At that moment, William dashed towards the alley. However, there was no sense in dashing straight ahead, as the other man was blocking his path. Even so, William moved to put himself between the one named Nimura, and the girl with the name of Izumi.

-It was all a simple matter of running up the wall and jumping, guiding his body to the space between the two people. Darting up a wall of concrete, he deftly landed in front of Izumi, his back turned to the girl.

Briefly smiling at the girl, he turned towards the suspicious man. "I was going to say it's impolite to not thank a person for his help, but you just said something I can't ignore."

William boldly stepped forwards, stance non-threatening, but guarded nonetheless.

"Why are you pushing this girl around... Mister Exorcist!?"

William wasn't sure that Nimura was an exorcist- But his experience told him only one of them would be as well-trained as this man and possess such incredible physical abilities. He wasn't familiar with the Exorcists beyond a few brush-ups with them when he'd been investigating local spirit activity, but from his impressions of them, this man sure acted like one.

Regardless, there was something here that didn't strike William well. An Exorcist shouldn't be chasing what seemed like an ordinary girl around... Unless she was connected to something related to his own job. If that was so, then this girl and him truly shared a bond, one that could even lead him to his brother...!

    Evening

Certainly when I strolled on out here to the entertainment district, I had no idea that I'd get to see such theatrics. A mass of hooded men and women, all tentatively listening to their prophets words, in the middle of the day, no less. It's certainly something you don't get to see every day. But... Imagine my surprise when I'm suddenly made the center of attention. Little ol' me; just an innocent passerby, pulled up on stage and given the leading role. In a way, I guess you can say it's a bit flattering, once you get past the onset of "stage fright", but not everyone needs to know that.

Evidently, it doesn't seem like I'll just be able to walk off without incident now. With the guy behind the podium so fixed on me that I can feel his eyes tapping the back of my head, it'd be rude of me not to at least give him a "howdy do".

Thinking about the situation I've gotten myself into once more, I can only sigh, shake my head, and grin at the magnitude of this mess.

"Hark, fair prophet, for I know not of this trial of which you speak!" Answering the show with my own theatrics, I turn with a spin- throwing out my arms to command the audience, "However, understand that thy words have not fallen upon the ears of the ignorant-! For thou has piqued my interests... Though I must express my discontent in the manner in which you've singled out this fair lass, now that I am here on stage, I have every intent to hear your voice."

Giving a quick bow, I steel my eyes and return the leader's burning vision. Extending a single hand forward, I give action to my words.

"Fancy words aside, it sounds to me like you're saying some pretty dicey stuff here, Old Man. Now... while I'm not exactly sure what your game is here, I've got this itching feeling that not everyone would appreciate what you're doing." Tilting my head to the side in confidence, I cross my arms and give a light shrug, "We wouldn't want to get into trouble, now would we?"

    Suzume Oshino & Saki Ryuumonbochi
    New Aoyoma, 'Brewed Awakenings'
    Evening

"Master of the sludge shop...? Reader of Hearts?”
Saki crossed her arms and nodded condescendingly at the shopkeeper’s confusion. Closing her eyes, Saki grinned at the staring woman. “Mmhmm.” Saki hummed. It was pleasing to the girl to leave people baffled by her introductions, to have them speechless and confused in the presence of someone as mighty as she, chosen by fate to rule over the mortal plane. A flower of greatness that bloomed in vivid color should wow any and all spectators, time and time again, so she would say.

    "...I see, I see."
“Mm… hmm?” Opening her eyes, Saki perked an eyebrow up at the sudden, unexpected words of understanding. Rarely, or rather never, did someone have a reaction such as this. Saki was unsure of what the woman "saw," but it immediately piqued her curiosity and she leaned in closer, tilting her head as the woman nodded at her.

"Master of the sludge shop? No, my dear Child of the Spirits, I am the Master of the Dark Spark. The Brewer of Life, the Queen of Clarity! Of course, such a misreading is to be expected... The two of you are new here, so you have yet to see my true power..."
“E-eh?” Saki exclaimed, jolting back at the shopkeeper, no, the Brewer of Life’s introduction. “Master of the Dark Spark? Qu-queen of Clarity?! My lord, we have stumbled into the lair of a mighty adversary! No doubt even now she brews a mighty enchantment from her Dark Cauldron! How could we be so careless?”

Despite the ludicrousness of everything the girl had said so far there was a sense of sincere urgency in her words as she spoke. Without a doubt there could be no joking about matters so serious, as someone as great as the Brewer of Life would never waste time with jokes. Grabbing Suzume by the wrist Saki turned to the door, trying to tug her to the exit in a frantic rush, completely oblivious to the rest of what the woman said.

“My lord, you must escape! We’ve fallen into her trap! You escape while I, the Brilliant Ember of Spring, will hold her off! No doubt she will try to throw us into her Opaque Labyrinth of Despair, but even in the darkest dungeons the flames of war can bloom!"

    Evening

While she was polite to a fault, it had quickly become clear to you that Tachibana Kimiko was not the most open of individuals, and in that respect, she was very much like the usual Exorcist.

Standing in the shadows of the memorial, her arms crossed and her expression contemplative, the young woman's expression was difficult to read, and while she did glance over at you occasionally, it seemed like she was more or less content with letting the atmosphere of the area sink into a slightly uncomfortable silence.

For Freelancing Exorcists, there was never really a reason to bond with those you worked with, after all, in most cases, it would simply be a one-time partnership.

There was no reason to make friends with someone you would never see again.

    "...He's here."

Looking up at Kimiko's words, the silver haired woman gestured towards an approaching man with a small nod of her head, her pose still as relaxed as it had always been. While you had been given a picture of the transport, or rather, the man who was acting as the transport, it took you a moment to recognize him for a very specific reason.

Namely, in the photo he had been able to pass as someone normal.

Right now, he was blatantly wearing a cape and marching through the crowds with a sort of reckless confidence that you couldn't help but admire. While exorcists were often 'stuck in the past,' they normally at least tried to keep up with modern clothing styles...

This guy just didn't seem to care... Although judging from the lack of people staring at him, it seemed that no one else cared either.

Becoming numb to weird people was a usual symptom of this part of town.

"Hey!" Smiling and cheerful, the red haired man came to a stop in front of you, "Sorry to keep you waiting, Koga-san, Tachibana-san. It's a hell of a package. I'll be glad to get rid of the thing."

You didn't see him carrying anything too obviously out of place...

You were about to comment on this, but the man's face grew darker as he pulled a ring from the pocket of his suit. It was embedded with a large, red stone, and while it was clear that the young man was trying to hand it over to you, it seemed like he was having trouble with the act of actually letting go of the thing.

"It's a bane-stone," seeing your expression, the man grimaced as he held out his hand, "You know, a Sesshoseki?"

    Killing stone.

    Bane stone.

A rare cursed item that granted near limitless power in exchange for your humanity...

The government must have been desperate if they were hiring freelancers to carry something like that... But at the same time, there would be no other choice.

Normal humans would give into the stone instantly, but people like you, or exorcists, could carry one around for a little while without long-lasting consequences.

    A little while.

This whole 'baton passing' system of item transport was starting to make sense...

"Damn thing gives me a headache like nothing else, and I've only had it for about a half hour." His smile slightly strained, the man's hand was shaking as he held it out to you, "It's not sealed... So whoever carries it shouldn't fight. It'll react to that... Just carry it to the destination, and do nothing else."

    It was sound advice.

"Now, which one of you wants to be the carrier," forehead shining with sweat, the fatigue that lay beneath the man's cheerful attitude was revealed, "I assure you it's probably the harder job. Damn thing gets in your head."

    "..."

Staying silent for a moment, Kimiko opened her mouth, and from her determined posture, you could tell she was about to volunteer.

There was time to interject, but...

Oh dear, now they are multiplying.

This is bad. Very bad. One I can keep under control, but two of them would cause an endless feedback loop of stupidity. There was only one way to resolve this situation in an efficient manner.

“My lord, you must escape! We’ve fallen into her trap! You escape while I, the Brilliant Ember of Spring, will hold her off! No doubt she will try to throw us into her Opaque Labyrinth of Despair, but even in the darkest dungeons the flames of war can bloom!"
As the words leave her mouth, I leave her a second to think about what she just said, then smack the back of her head with my flat hand.

"Focus, Saki. Always focus. Don't panic. Let me handle this." I try to match her seriousness of tone but even then Ijumped from seriousness to awkward cringing to suppressed laughter with every word I spoke.

"The spirits are finicky, and that woman over there, Nakamura-san, just keeps complaining that the seal I put on the building is messing with her research, but she shouldn't be researching me just because I can get along with ghosts for more than five minutes, eh Megumi?"
"Hm? Are you a medium of some kind?" There were several ways on how people could interact with spirits in a positive or symbiotic manner, but that would probably be one of the more widespread ones. Certainly pretty traditional, nothing wrong with that obviously.
"But hey, if you're looking for ghost trouble, I guess I could list a few places for you."
"That'd be most appreciated. A bit of extra pocket money wouldn't hurt." I try to keep the relaxed atmosphere with a light smile. Shouldn't try to break it even if the topic is business. Or well, a hobby.

"Although..." Leaning over the counter at you, the girl's eyes narrowed, "Aren't you two a bit young for exorcism work?"
"And I thought we wouldn't get that anymore. Still beats trying to wear a trenchcoat over a piggyback ride."

I give her a reassuring nod. Probably more reassuring to myself than to her.

"We can take care of ourselves. Together we're like 35...and over 3 meters tall."

Maybe a bit more elaboration would help her. "We're actually trying to get some credentials. Well, I am. My friend here is just in this to purge the darkness that befouls the lands. So not giving us low-rank cleanup work would be appreciated."

    "My game? Get into trouble...?"

A smile crossing his face, the man laughed aloud at your question, his naturally thundering voice carrying over the general rumblings of the Entertainment District. It was a sincere laugh, not one meant to be mocking or insulting, and yet, you couldn't figure out exactly what it was supposed to mean at all...

"My dear child, I am here not to bring trouble, but to warn others of it! I am not the hand of God, but simply his voice!"
His arms raised in the air as if praising the sky, the man laughed again, "It is true that the coming time will not be pleasant for some, but it is the duty of humans to endure! Because we cannot avoid the will of God, we must simply sing his praises and endure... Yes, the trial will not be everlasting, and those who overcome it will be blessed with paradise!"

Once more, talking on and on about things that moved in a circle, with the sort of language that made it difficult to discern the truth.

"People like you in particular are especially blessed,"
lowering his arms, the man's voice does not lower in either volume or intensity, "The "Qualified Ones," chosen by the Black Beast, whose eyes and ears can see and hear the lamentations of the dead, and whose actions carry both hope and despair for those still living."

He had said much, and yet you had learned little.

The urge to tell him to get to the point already was overpowering, but before you could open your mouth to do so...

"Could you try talking like a normal person would, Mr. Doomsday?"

    Someone else did.

She wasn't much younger than you, about the same age actually, but the look in her eyes was one of endless amusement.

"It's not very polite to drag random people into your speeches, you know? Especially when you've been saying the same thing every day for the past seven days. Trial this, trial that, demons coming out of hell, the sky opening up, the monster of eight years ago returning, bah, I need some new material for the paper. At least spout something new."

"...And who, pray tell, are you child?"

The voice of the priest had gone quiet, but the young woman didn't seem to notice or care.

"Johanna Morgenstern, High School reporter, and exposer of frauds everywhere at your service!" With a mocking salute at the man, the girl moved closer to you, "Don't talk to this guy, the conversations never go anywhere. He's just in it for the kicks, typical cult leader fear mongering stuff... Of course, I probably shouldn't have said that in a crowd of them..."

Looking around nervously at the hooded figures, who were still watching you silently, the girl grabbed your arm with a surprising amount of strength.

"You know... Let's get out of here while the sun's still up. No need to further tempt becoming the victim of a crime, I mean, being on the stage is nice and all, and I'm sure nothing would happen... But the actors are always outnumbered by the audience, and no one ever reports these guys for any crimes... And I don't feel like reporting anyone's obituary today."

For some reason, the talkative girl really seemed to want you to leave.

The hooded figures weren't being hostile, yet she seemed convinced that staying here was a mistake...

Perhaps she was just using you as an excuse for her own escape.

"Oh yeah?" Looking around at his fellow patrons for a moment, that odd half-smile of Kenji's returned, "That's good. I came here to freak people out a bit. Thought they might stop wandering around at night if I do. But they won't, they never do, everyone who lives here is stubborn."

Eying his empty glass with distaste, the bespectacled teenager sighed, before looking up at you with one closed eye and a smirk.

"Still, that response of yours was good. No flash of fear, no obvious anger, just stayed calm and collected... Didn't call me a freak either. I like that, Maiya was the same way, maybe I really could use you."

You really weren't sure what he meant by use, and while you were honestly curious, another part of you really didn't want to know. As a bartender you were pretty used to troublesome people showing up at your place... But you suddenly got the feeling that you'd be seeing this kid a lot more than any of your past troublemakers... It simply couldn't be avoided.

He didn't give you the time to answer.

He was just that sort of person.

"If you found the guy who did it... Who killed your father... What exactly would you do?"

This kid had no social grace.

Even his partner seemed surprised he had asked something so tasteless.

Liane had been giggling ever since you mentioned the trench-coat incident. It had only been a small smile at first, but as you neared the end of your statement it became clear that she had found something incredibly funny about those words. It was almost annoying, watching her struggle not to laugh at you, feeling the emotions of amusement she was trying so hard to suppress, and so it was with some relief from both sides that she finally calmed herself down, the light of humor still present in her eyes.

"Credentials eh?" Still leaning over the counter, the young woman brushed the hair out of her eyes, "Well, even if you tell me that, you guys are still just kids. I can't send you after the big stuff and still keep a clean conscience... A lot can go wrong in this kind of work. Even a low level spirit can end an exorcist if you get careless. It's not a job with a very long life expectancy, you know?"

She was trying to dissuade you.

Her words probably weren't going to stop you from pursuing this dream, but there was a tinge of genuine concern for the both of you in her voice.

"But kids like you are the stubborn type..."

She was looking at the two of you, her expression impossible to read. It was pretty uncomfortable, standing there under her gaze, and for a moment you get the strangest urge to retreat, but...

"Well, tell you what," sighing, the young woman stood straight up, a small, confident smile on her face, "If you're looking for credentials as an exorcist, I could help you with that. Work for me for a little while, and I'll take you with me on a few cleanup jobs. I was put in charge of this part of the city." Knowing that that sounded slightly unbelievable, the young woman smiled nervously, "I used to have a part time job with the government; and now they pay me to live here and well... It's a long story.... Anyway, if you work with me, the people you want to notice you just might... And I'll be able to keep on eye on you at the same time..."

The last part was said so quietly that you could barely hear it, but it was a pretty interesting offer all the same.

    And then...

"So what say you? Child of the Spirits and Reader of Hearts!"

...You realized she was the type of person who would call you those things for the rest of your relationship with a smile.

A Sessho-seki. According to Japanese mythology, a killing stone is the transformed corpse of Tamamo no Mae that will end the life of whatever comes in contact with it, hence its name. In truth, they are crystallized forms of pure supernatural energy which grant their host unlimited spirit power in exchange for their soul. The user will be consumed by the hatred that emanates from the stone and become a dangerous phantom. It's possible to avoid corruption by placing a seal on the Bane Stone, but this naturally limits the power obtained from it.

I see... Since this Sessho-seki is not sealed, having one exorcist transport it for a short period of time before handing it to another would help lessen the negative effects imparted by the stone and avoid a tragedy. It's a clever solution to the problem, although I am not positive on whether it has been a complete success or not. Looking at the man who has acted as the transport before us, it becomes evident that even for skilled professionals like us, carrying the stone is an arduous task. I cannot determine whether any of us will recover from the stress sustained during this mission after a good night's sleep.

My first impulse was to let Tachibana-san do as she pleased. After all, my specialty lies in protection, and I am afraid I cannot do such thing without fighting. But when the image of the kid I saw earlier flashes through my mind, I find myself wondering if that would be the 'right' way to protect Tachibana-san. As the red-haired man has noted, transporting the stone will be the hardest part of the job. The stone will use every chance it gets to corrupt its transport. I've heard Tachibana-san is a high-ranking exorcist who stands above me. Unfortunately, it wouldn't be prudent to assume that her position ensures her success. I must anticipate the result of failure and plan accordingly to reduce the damage as much as possible should such scenario become reality.

It stands as a simple fact that outside this life as exorcists, Tachibana-san has family and friends and I do not. The grief that her death would cause to those who know her will most likely be unimaginable. Instead, I have no attachment to the world of the living. As a proud member of the Koga, I am not afraid of death and I am ready for such event. Since my power is related to the use of emotions, I've worked hard to achieve mastery over them as well... In other words, everything leads me to believe I am the better candidate for carrying this stone to its designated position.

"Please, allow me to be the next carrier."

Stepping forward before Tachibana-san can voice her decision; I express my wish and hold my hand.

    Amamiya Mashiro (Ziodyne)
    New Aoyoma, Mashiro's House

“Good evening, Amamiya-san. It’s been quite some time, hasn’t it? Do you remember who I am?”

The small smile that appeared on the face of the slightly older man made Mashiro groan internally. It’s not a joke, he wanted to say. Don’t you dare look down on me, he wanted to shout. But instead he remained quiet and smiled nervously, scratching at his cheek in an awkward manner as the unfamiliar man explained the purpose of his visit.

It’s not that his situation made it impossible for him to blend in and live a, moderately, normal life. It’s just that everyone suddenly thought they were really clever by bringing it up every chance they got, as if the simple fact of knowing suddenly made them funnier.

It didn’t mean that he couldn’t remember what had happened yesterday.

It just meant that he’d forget faster than normal.

Memories were elusive and distant… all except for that one.

And now this unfamiliar man was casually claiming to have information of that day, and just as casually offering to destroy of it. Mashiro’s awkward smile disappeared then and his expressions hardened instantly.

“I’ll take it,” is all he said.

The kid, Kenji, gets that little grin on his face and looks around, "Oh yeah? That's good. I came here to freak people out a bit. Thought they might stop wandering around at night if I do. But they won't, they never do, everyone who lives here is stubborn."

I snorted, ain't that the truth, and you're a sterling example of that stubbornness yourself. He struck me as a particularly committed person, what with the attitude and personality he's got going.

"Still, that response of yours was good. No flash of fear, no obvious anger, just stayed calm and collected... Didn't call me a freak either. I like that, Maiya was the same way, maybe I really could use you."

I remained impassive, so, had a bit of a thing with being called a freak, huh? And that was a particularly interesting choice of words there, 'use you'. Looks like Kenny's got an eye and a mouth.

Part of the way he was yammering on got on my nerves, not a little bit condescending. But he seemed like he didn't have very many friends, so I'll try and put up with it. Getting the feeling he'll be coming around more often, joy of joys.

"Still, I understand that this sort of talk might be bad for your business, so I'll keep it down, but can I ask you something?"

A split-second later, before I even start thinking about opening my mouth, he goes on, "If you found the guy who did it... Who killed your father... What would you do?"

Stay classy, kid. I'd tell him to back off, but he's growing on me.

But shit, ain't that a question I've been asking myself for a while now. I grab the eternally somewhat-dirty glass and resume polishing it, looking a bit pensive.

"Well, I suppose the first thing I'd do is give him a couple of good ones right across the face," I started, with a wolfish grin, then I frown, "After that, well..." I polish the glass quietly for a few moments.

What would I do after that? Give him to the cops? Or... carry out my own little sentence.

That cold, hard thought made me a bit uneasy, I enjoyed a good brawl, same as the next perhaps a little overly-aggressive bar owner in their early 20's did, but to take Justice into my own hands...

    Well. That was something else.

"Not really sure what I'd do after. Still haven't quite found the answer to that yet."
