Dunno, but likely, the devs kinda mentioned it off-hand. At least it works better than Noble Republic.
Since EUIV doesn't use real characters or anything, it's kind of impossible to replicate dynastic elections/tanistry; you just have to imply whatever method of succession is being used. Since EUIV represents the Commonwealth and the PU between Poland-Lithuania separately, it's decent enough to have the former as an elective monarchy, and the latter as an ordinary monarchy.

Lithuania as monarchy clearly makes sense since they did not elect the duke, but it was assumed whoever was elected as the King became intronised as the Grand Duke. Though I wonder if EU series will ever represent decentralisation of PLC when the magnate oligarchy became dominant. At some point magnates could field individually bigger armies than the royal one, and virtually PLC broke into sphere of influences controlled by few families, which later allowed Russians to assume indirect control.
