Are people actually shitting on the new cast? They're all pretty in character for this movie. Rey wants to go new places, Poe's a hothead, Finn's a coward, Kylo's wants power to do what he wants. It's the old cast that got the shaft in this movie. Luke swung wildly between scared mentor and crazy goof, and Leia busted the force out of nowhere and then spent most of the movie in a coma but still as a driving plot point.

I also laughed inappropriately during the first space battle because of how spoilers.the resistance bombers committed fratricide by being too close and it made me think of a Wraith Squadron scene Ships were neat, though.

Finally saw The Last Jedi; I'm not sure how to feel about it.

It was really depressing, and I'm annoyed with how Luke and Snoke went out, though at least Luke got to pass the torch I suppose. Also Rose is going to be crucified by fans, and I'm glad that she didn't sure even if I don't give a shit about her romance since that would've been terrible writing. Kylo is really not holding it together well. Also I feel like Rey should've done more; it's like everyone but her got CHARACTER GROWTH. Well, at least she wasn't Phasma.

i understand why it had to be done. Even to a lesser extent understand why they did it that way (she had to die someway, and it’s not like Kylo could do it) but still, yeah, it was lame.

The main problem for me is that this is not the way I would want those characters to go out. Essentially Han dies a failure, killed by his own son, Luke dies alone and also a failure. If those characters were less iconic (and there would not be the EU... sorry SW Legends) it would probably matter less. Here although this is technically a solid arc for Luke, it just seems more evident that the author is taking potshots at Campbell and I don't feel SW is the right story to do that. Besides one of the underlying reasons is still that they want to get the old characters out of the picture. I can at least say that Luke's death was from a story standpoint better than Han's.

I actually agree. I liked Luke's arc in this movie, but it combined with Han's in the last movie and just how much of a failure the New Republic proved itself to be last movie seems excessive. I wish things were a bit more even between the Republic (not the Resistance, but the Republic) and the First Order instead of the latter automatically becoming overwhelmingly powerful seemingly from out of nowhere, and maybe - maybe - Kylo Ren had just been one of Luke's apprentices instead of Han and Leia's child.

Basically, my main complaints are with the setting as established by "The Force Awakens".
