Well, the larger conflict has a feel of Japan vs. the world. So nationalism at least.
It's this sci-fi/fantasy future where Japan is a world power if not a superpower. Inevitably they come into conflict with China.
America is also not portrayed that positively.
In all honesty neither is Japan, or at least a lot of Japan's more modern ideas. There's a certain amount of women's treatment and liberal thought that are not painted very positively in it, like how Miyuki is hailed as being more womanly by acting all Yamato Nadeshiko-like and Erika is scandalous for suggesting or wearing clothing that is even tame by our standards.
And yeah, China is TEH EVILZ. So far they've all been either manipulative triad-types that would sacrifice children for profit, or aggressive militants that want to steal Yamato secrets and use them for their own nefarious power-hungry goals.
