To Be a Master! (Reboot!) (IC Thread)

    To Be a Master

Since time immemorial, humans have been fascinated by the primal spirits of nature - those of Gaia, and those which preceded Gaia. Arceus, the Original One. Giratina, the Creator's Shadow. Dialga, master of the Flow of Time. Palkia, master of possibilities. Rayquaza of the Sky. Kyogre of the Sea. Groudon of Earth. Ho-Oh, guardian of things above. Lugia, guardian of things below. These and more - the ancient legends - humans revered and feared. Once, in the Age of Gods and before, they simply co-existed, with humans and spirits working together, communicating with one Unified Language.

But soon enough, that language was lost, with Divine Words all that remained. Humans made pacts with various beings of power, who taught them the divine languages used to shape nature, and this worked...for a time. But when the gods themselves began to fade, as faith in the powers of earth grew distant when the belief in the Holy Church began sweeping the world, a new solution was needed, one that did not rely on the cooperation of the world.

And so humanity worked out a way to use themselves - and their imaginations - to make miracles possible, by changing some of their soul into the so-called Magic Circuits, so they were not merely a component of a greater system - but were systems in and of themselves. Before, Gaia or Alaya would have done the brute processing for change, with the Divine Words like commands run on a computer, but now, each magus had to visualize the effect one wanted, and hypnotize him or herself into believing it was possible. Yet as individuals, they knew themselves to be limited, and their craft difficult to pass on, so they crafted World Eggs, inscribing their abilities upon the world through rituals involving the creation of artificial Great Spirits - Mew, the Origin of and Pattern for the Lesser Daemons - and sealing it into a great World Egg, so that these abilities might be preserved.

The Regi - Regigigas, Registeel, Regirock, and Regice - were made at this time to assist in the creation of the World Eggs, which was the beginning of modern thaumaturgy as we know it.

Since the creation of those, and the linking to this artificial spirit, humans have brought forth Daemons upon opening their Magic Circuits, creatures of power and spirit that reflect their alignment, as a reflection of themselves as a System and Concept, just as Gaia has her reflections. Some rare humans even developed the ability to bind "wild" lesser daemons through the use of various spells and implements, becoming Daemon Masters...but the few who succeeded are legendary in their own right.

Even so, the system had limits. None of the legends could be brought forth or bound without their consent - though occasionally, they might bond with a human who reflected their concept well, or make a pact with an individual or a family. Zelretch, for instance, is known to be bonded to a Palkia, as Aozaki Aoko is bonded to Reshiram.

Yet for all the powers magecraft and daemons conferred, there was nothing that would extend the lifespan, aside from the heresy of becoming a Dead Apostle, a creature half-man, half-beast which ravenously fed on humans to prevent themselves from decaying, or through secret rituals, ensouling oneself in one's daemon and leaving one's physical body behind. Even this had limited applications, however, as one then no longer could have human form, and was very much an elemental.

The Einzbern sought a different way to immortality to surpass these limits - to not just incarnate in a daemon, but to change one's self into eternal spirit, able to shift form and function, to split and combine souls with ease. Through a combination of their work and a boon from the Sleeping One, Jirachi, they gained this. Their resultant line bore the power of wishes and possibilities - but in time, the secret of eternity was lost, and Jirachi was nowhere to be found. Thus, they have labored for over a thousand years to recover the power they wielded, the secrets of the lost Ages they once bore - until finally coming up with the Holy Grail War, which itself was an imitation of Jirachi's ability. True, it used 60 years of prana from a leyline instead of 1000, but even this crude imitation was coveted by many. Using something similar to a daemon's materialization process, the Grail would copy the information of a Heroic Spirit onto the template of an "artificial" Daemon vessel, creating the beings known as Servants for various Masters to use - superior, but temporary, creations - creations which in their death and return to Origin might open a path that could be followed.

But the Wars brought only tragedy, with the squabbles of the early wars leading to the tragedy of the Fourth, when the corrupted wish for a spirit that embodied evil itself led to the creation of a Beast in the place of one of the Servants - a Beast bound in service to Sajyou Manaka, the Witch of Calamity. She was one of the greatest Witches to have ever lived, an abnormality born with a connection to the Root of the World. Together with Kyurem, who she had bonded with, she was the greatest monster ever to fight in the Wars, requiring a coalition of every Servant and Master to bring her down at great cost. By the time she fell, Kariya, Berserker, Tokiomi, Assassin, Lancer, and El Melloi, all lay dead, with Rider and Archer grievously injured - and Rider having lost his mount and chariot. The Fifth War caused less in the way of physical destruction, but still, the gate did not open, and no wishes were granted.

Much of the Association, not being happy with this ritual that simply bled off talent - and had the potential to destroy the secrecy of the moonlit world - wished to dismantle the Greater Grail and call the Wars a failure, but the Einzbern (and some of the Noble Families) opposed this vehemently. Due to this, it was declared one more chance would be given - that that Tohsaka and others would sit out this fight - that the Association and the Church would take a larger role in testing and choosing prospective representatives, granting their blessing to those they deemed worthy of a wish.

Atlas Academy, the Clock Tower, the Vatican, the Wandering Tomb - these and more have stepped forward as places to test those who have desire a chance to fight, and possibly to recruit the more talented among them. Sites have been prepared, enforcers sent out, and soon the trials will commence.

    Participating Characters:

Albert Welf of House Welf (EnigmaticFellow), partnered with Gyarados, who hails from a branch of the House of Este. Accomplished in the arts of spiritual evocation and invocation, they once admired the Einzbern, but the loss of the Third Magic has caused House Welf to look upon them unfavorably, believing they are unfit to continue in the prominence they bear. House Welf seeks to undermine the Einzbern and usurp their position as nobility through an understanding of Power. Power is their passion, their research, their obsession. He joins this War to bring an end to the Wars and allow the Grail to be dismantled, crushing the last hope of the Einzbern - with this feat allowing him to rise to the rank of Head of House.

Akimitsu Tsukino (Caster), partnered with Kirlia, a descendant of Shinto ritualists from the Far East who some believe have the abilities of a daemon master. An only child, he does not wield the usual elements, and has an uncommon affinity for spirits. He is one who wishes to change the world, and so has responded to the summons for Masters in the Grail War. His arrival has been noted by some in the Tower curious as to what the old families of the East might wish - and what their powers might be.

Himemiya Toshirou (lethum), whose daemon is Milotic, a Freelancer who seeks the Grail in the name of the Devon Ul-Mucel family, once relatively prominent during the early years of the Magic Association, but which has fallen to a lesser, intermediate role a few centuries in and never recovered. Their wish is inscribed in a Mystic Code given to Toshirou. He is known as a Steam Magus, the last survivor of the fallen house of Ealhswith, which was destroyed in an attack by Dead Apostles. Raised by the family maid, who went into hiding in Japan, he has completed a number of missions as a mercenary, and has been noticed by the Enforcers for his brutal - if efficient - work.

"John Smith" (mangafreak7793), whose daemon is an Alakazam, a self-proclaimed storyteller whose history is littered with gaps - and who the Association is fairly certain is not using his real name. His abilities are largely unknown, with the little information available on him describing him as being affiliated with a now-deceased alchemist on the run from Atlas, with connections to the underworld of necromancers and an interest in strange artifacts. He dresses oddly, combining the stereotypical wizard robe and hat with roller blades. He has occasionally been spotted around Aozaki Aoko, a source of consternation to many in the Noble Families, who do not know what to make of him and thus consider him a threat.

Lloyd Hadings (Lycodrake), partnered with Houndoom, a curse specialist from Greece - the unenviable second son of a magus family. In his youth, he would be used as a practice dummy by the heir to the family, who likewise practiced curses. These have resulted in permanent damage and muscle weakness that the best healing spells have been unable to heal. He seeks mastery of magecraft - and the power of the Grail - to purge any last bit of humanity ("weakness") within him, allowing him to transcend his limits and bring about the destruction of his family - and perhaps even himself.

Alfredo PakPak (Wing), an odd magus of Metal and Wind from the Philippines, considered something of a magical backwater. Orphaned after the death of his parents, his life was forever changed when he met the sisters Slyvia and Cynthia - magi who took him as an apprentice, introducing him to the moonlit world. With Skarmory by his side, he joined them on a journey on the run from the Association's Enforcers, as Slyvia had been placed under a sealing designation. He even found a family for himself of sorts - until another car accident claimed the lives of his companions, with him only surviving due to his strongest ability - forging a body of steel. Since then, he has become obsessed with becoming stronger, and sees the Grail as a way to resurrect his family, as he is willing to risk - or do - anything to be by their side once again.

    "Touko. They're breaking through."

The unnatural blue of Shiki Ryougi's Mystic Eyes of Death Perception flashed in the grim darkness as she fell upon her foes with a ferocity unmatched by her words, her bone-white kimono stark against the dark, mist-like smoke which fell around her like drabs of paint. She spun, each creature she stuck with as much as scratch dissolving into smoke as if consumed by an invisible fire, leaving behind only a large stain of utter wrongness. It churned about her, relentless and malevolent, dissipating only before the onslaught of another flurry of silver slashes in the gloom.

In the distance, four immense forms did battle against shambling things oozed through gaps in reality, shapeless, ever-changing congeries of protoplasmic bubbles and eyes forming and unforming like pustules of filthy light, filling the very air with unearthly shrills, cacophonies, warblings that could drive one mad.

    "UWOOOOOAAAAA!"

Bloodcurdling cadences, unutterable truths, crawling letters trickling down hundreds of dimensions on alien gravities like a cancer floating on quantum foam, it came. Anti-life. Anti-luminosity that crucifies sentience.

The foe was never static - it was change itself, flesh mutating, mind boiling to bilious madness, lucidity nowhere to be seen, daemonic pathogens pouring, pouring into this reality from a breach into the Outer Dark. Event horizons open in the mind...

Three of those who fought desperately against this foe were earthbound, two of them vaguely recognizable as a Mega-Gengar and a Mega-Alakazam with markings reminiscent of tribal tattoos, with the iridescent light of Psybeam mixing with the living shade of countless Shadow Balls. A living mist roiled on the ground around them, keeping the dark smoke at bay as another daemon joined them in battle against the malevolent idioplasm from beyond the stars, taking the form of living nightmares from humanity's worst fears.

This daemon was a vaguely deer-like creature with eight horns shining in seven colors: Xerneas, the Legendary Daemon which represented life, defended life, as it did now, launching an orb of crackling pink lightnings at the creeping miasma.

    BOOM!

For a moment, the enemy was pushed back, but like a whispering tide. Could one kill an ocean? Could one destroy monstrosities that had consumed entire worlds before, which lurked in the infinite shade between dimensions? A cancer of worlds that could infect all those who touched them - if they were not protected? The Devouring Plague could never be truly stopped...

But it could be stalled for a time, as twin avatars of death struck out with combined attacks from sky and ground alike, whirlwinds of destruction with blade and wing.

"Yvetal. Oblivion Wing. Open a path."

A shill, piercing cry echoed as the legendary Daemon that represented Destruction complied, unleashing a spear of darkness-spears of wind that descended from the sky, ripping apart a mass of creatures standing in the Reaper's way, absorbing some of the fell energies they fed on. Immediately, they began to reform, empowered by the rift - but slower, now. Still, no conventional power could destroy them, and so even the greatest of daemons could only perform a holding action. Only the one who embodied the Void, the beautiful grim reaper, could end their existences - could end this onslaught - but she was but one person, and could be overwhelmed if not for the daemons that flocked about her.

She sped forward now, form blurring as she sought the rift, the foes which rushed into her range cut down by her shining, icy blade, and those around her knocked back. More rushed at her, anti-life, anti-sentience seeking to consume the One who could destroy them, becoming smoke, becoming flame, and despite the cacophony of the great Daemons acting as a kind of support artillery, they couldn't act fast enough.

    "Kuh. Touko..."

A distant grunt sounded, and then three daemons launched their final attack. Something like a hundred - no, a thousand - bolts of light tore apart the darkness, raining down onto the evil-shaped forms being disgorged from the rift to the endless dark and wiping their physical forms from the world. For the briefest of instants, the field was bare.

"Shiki, now. I'm out of prana."

Spinning once, the Reaper accelerated. It was as if she was being propelled by an icy wind, footsteps racing across a ground crawling with black veins carrying corruption itself, a signal of anti-information broadcast by who knew what. In her wake, hundreds of icy blades shredded the veins, causing them too to vanish, even as the forms of her foes began to regenerate, only to be skewered by dark spears.

    There there...almost there!

    "Shiki!"

A monstrous spiked foot nearly splattered her as something erupted from the rift in reality - a vast, evil-shaped form that nearly defied comprehension. It was like a dragon in shape, but was formed from countless hooks of dark iridescence, its sheer presence enough to bring any magus, any hero, any god to its knees. It glowered and smoked and hissed, and sensing the true threat, attacked.

Lightning erupted from every inch of its surface.

Dark spears of wind sought out the form of the Reaper, tiny against its gargantuan bulk.

Living shadow and light mingled stabbed forth, to entangle, to rip, ensnare, destroy.

And the Filth rose with it.

Night became day, as all of these attacks - the sum total of everything that had been used against its minions - was launched against the one who was Death itself, blotting out her form.

Destruction rained down, shockwaves tossing every living thing besides that ancient Dragon to the ground, a mix of light and sound that would have shredded the rearguard, save that Xerneas had shared its well of life with them. Even so, they were sorely wounded, their defense shredded like tissue paper.

    And Shiki...

"Can you do it?" Touko asked, from where her puppet lay, about to crumble, her voice but a rasping whisper now.

When the attack finally ended, the Reaper stood, unscathed, having "killed" the essence of every attack headed her way. She spoke with a quiet, solemn dignity that would almost be terrifying, no - was terrifying as she lifted her sword and moved.

"As long as it exists, I can even kill God."

At the Clock Tower, Aoko Aozaki, the Magic Gunner Miss Blue, the wielder of the Fifth Magic, was engaged in a titanic struggle of her own. On any field of battle, she had never before met her match, but it seemed that this time, things might be different.

"Kuh...damn you!" she snarled as she attacked the foe before her, attempting to outspeed, outwit, outmaneuver her opponent as she consumed rib-eye steaks at a rate that most would consider decidedly unhealthy. Still, it was clear that she was beginning to slow, which her inhuman opponent noted with amusement.

"Psy! Psyduck!" her opponent warbled. It was an unusually blue variety of the species, and one which had on several occasions come close to besting her as an eating champion. Whether it was ramen, steak, yakisoba, pumpkin/cherry/apple or other pies, potato salad, pizza, ribs, pancakes, or even tofu, the daemon had a voracious appetite.

...perhaps fortunately, it wasn't hers, or it might have eaten her out of house and home. On the other hand, given the number of restaurants which offered challenges to consume certain dishes in exchange for free food, perhaps not.

Either way, she glowered at the fell beast as it quacked happily, downing its portions as if oblivious to the ill-intent she radiated. And perhaps it was, as Psyducks had never been the most intelligent of daemons, even if this one was a creation of a Dead Apostle.

'I swear Sumire is up to no good again. Whenever this thing appears, it can only mean trouble. What does she need me for anyway? Have the denizens of Ry'leh stirred at last or something?'

That would be just what she needed, for the sunken city to rise. Besides, this should be a job for the woman who called herself Ciel, the one bonded to the Zekrom, the legendary daemon of ideals, not Aoko, who was bonded instead to Reshiram, the legendary daemon of truth...

'Though perhaps it is not a good thing for a Dead Apostle Ancestor's envoy to go to the Holy Church.'

"Tch. Alright, you bastard. We finish this and then you tell me what your Master wants, alright?" she growled at the duck between bites of her perfectly done steak. Hm. She'd have to compliment the Asssociation on their choice of chef this time around, one Gordon Ramsay, who was said to have learned his craft in a contract with a True Daemon.

"Psy!" the squat blue avian acknowledged, as both turned back to their meal, faces grim and intent with deadly purpose - to be the champion.

In their competitiveness, they did not really notice the third person in the contest - the enigmatic John Smith - also known to some as the Storyteller, who had arrived in London to take part in the Trials preceding the Sixth War.

    Clock Tower, Mage Association
    London, United Kingdom
    July 21, 2014

Waver Velvet, the magus and lecturer better known these days as Lord El-Melloi II, the noble who commanded the El-Melloi faction within the Association, was a decidedly unhappy man as he looked upon the bane of his existence: paperwork. There were days when he wished he'd never decided to steal the artifact to summon Iskander from his former instructor, the late Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi, days he wished he had not killed El-Melloi in single combat after Sola had sought her own fortunes, days when he cursed becoming a noble - though to be fair it had spared him a grim fate. He was very troubled by the Archibald heiress, she who had inflicted this fate upon him, binding him to serve her family.

Really, he considered her something like a devilish black cat - his personal bringer of misfortune. Even if she had become rather attractive, with a sweetness characteristic of early womanhood, and blue eyes held the light of maturity. She favored blouses that were completely out of fashion these days, but she was surrounded by a nobility that was untouched by the vogue.

It was because of her that he now had to deal with the elite magi who called themselves Lords, and the power struggles between their various factions that turned the Clock Tower into a political minefield, with none willing to concede anything except for a favor or promise of recompense in the future. This was even the case with something as troublesome as the Grail War, as some resisted him because they wished something from the Grail - while some simply wished to be contrary to obtain concessions.

'I really hate politics. Some days I wish I could just smash my way through it...'

He smiled wanly at that thought, remembering how his daemon - now a Golurk - had smashed aside his former teacher, and how good it had felt to prove the older magus wrong. Then he sighed, shaking his head.

Remembering those days was foolishness, as he had no Servant now, even if Alexander lived on in his soul. His only major weapon of coercion was to mention his "boss", the notorious Vice Director Barthomeloi Lorelei, given that the Archibald family was one of the very few who possessed any ties to the esteemed "Queen" of the Clock Tower. Not that it did that much good when she was so often out on yet another Dead Apostle hunt, leaving him to deal with her responsibilities as well as his.

'Like finding out who this Lady Amber who has proven troublesome in the East is. Word is she has organized a new faction, one that is small, but exceedingly powerful despite that.'

Or dealing with the various incidents caused by two of his...students, the infamous duo known as "Mary of July" and "Poppins of July" - Rin Tohsaka and Luviagelita Edelfelt. What deity had he offended to be assigned those two?

At least with the preparations for the Trials, the Edelfelt and Tohsaka had been assigned to tasks that kept them physically far apart, so they would not come to blows.

He hoped so, at least, since the alternative was quite embarrassing for him.

He also hoped that an incident wouldn't result from the Tohsaka's and Edelfelt's mutual love interest now being associated with Atlas Academy, under the direct command of the Director, Sion Eltnam Atlasia. The last thing he needed, after all, was an international crisis on his hands, as he did not get paid nearly enough for this.

Not that that was unlikely in the matter of the Sixth Grail War and the trials. Dignitaries from all over the world would be coming to observe - either to lend support, recruit, or mark people down for execution - and there were security concerns to address. The Enforcers had been dispatched to keep order and help guide dignitaries, and the training facilities had been prepared...

At least the Three Founding Families had not squabbled too much at his proposed Trials for the War. Maikri Zouken had, yes, but the others agreed - and with Matou Sakura having disappeared, Zouken had no intention of participating himself. He suspected the Einzbern would seek out a champion from the group, but that was within their rights, and they had generously contributed Joy-type healer homunculi and Jenny-type enforcer homunculi to make sure the trials went well. Perhaps too generously, but then they were the richest of the Three, with the Matous trailing them, and the Tohsaka firmly in third.

His main concerns now were lingering frictions between the Church (which had agreed to send a representative, provide a powerful mediator for the War, and host a Trial), and some of the other branches. The Director of Atlas, for example, apparently had some bad blood with the Burial Agent being dispatched, and her close associate Emiya Shirou did not much care for many in the Church aside from Caren Hortensia - ironically the daughter of his former nemesis Kirei Kotomine.

The Trials would be an interesting mix of battles pairing magus and daemon, magi set against daemons, daemons set against magi, and free for alls, to assess how prospective "Masters" in the War would fare in different situations. After all, one must first have the will and ability master one's own soul before one could command something as powerful as a Servant.

So it was planned anyway, with an interesting cast of characters to participate - including the sister of the Witch of Calamity, an alleged "storyteller" with ties to the black market of magi, and a noble of House Welf. Who would advance? Who would fall? He didn't know. To be honest, he was rather curious to find out.

    Rap-pap-pap-pap-rap! Rap-rap!

Interrupting his thoughts was a knocking on the door to the pattern of "Shave and a haircut, two bits!" a pattern only one person in the world used instead of the much more respectful two knocks - at least at his doorway.

"Come in," he said with a sigh, standing up as he saw the impish heiress to the Archibald family - and his fiancee - entering, with her Mismagius floating behind her silently. Not for the first time he was reminded of how beautiful she was - and how troubling he found that, since he could little resist her. In those moments, he found himself understanding the late Kayneth's fixation on the Sophia-Ri woman, but told himself that this wasn't the same thing, that she was the one who was interested in him.

The truth of the matter non-withstanding.

"Working hard, Lord El-Melloi?" she quipped wryly, somewhat amused to see the lecturer nearly hidden behind stacks of paper.

"...what do you want this time, Lady Archibald?" he sighed, giving the blonde an inscrutable look while knowing he'd be unable to refuse her. He was bound to her, after all, even if he was now 35 and she, 28. "Come to make me cross yet another boundary?"

"As if you haven't enjoyed it in the past," the blonde shot back teasingly, favouring the former Archibald apprentice with a smirk. "Besides, you know I don't like being called ‘Lady’. Its far too formal, especially coming from my fiance. I get the feeling you’re being subtly malicious, or it’s like your snapping, ‘that’s close enough.’ Call me Luna, as I've asked."

    "No."

"...do I have to make it an order, oh benefactor of my family?"

"...no, La--Luna," Waver ground out. He just couldn't win against her - never could - wasn't sure if he'd ever be able to, really. "So, to what do I owe the pleasure of your company."

"Can't I just come to visit?" the girl asked innocently - too innocently.

    A long sigh.

"...we both know that isn't why you've come..."

    A raised eyebrow.

"I am bored," she declared imperiously. "The politicking of the old men can be so dreadful at times."

"Well yes, but that's what you have me for," Waver broke in, unamusedly gesturing at the stacks of paper that said politicking had resulted in. Really, he was going to have to assign Tohsaka to clerical work the next time her actions nearly caused a disaster.

"...well, yes, but you've also made a reputation as someone who can't be cowed easily, so they try to bother me with their boorish antics," the young woman groused, seeming a little agitated, since she didn't enjoy the false flattery and jockeying for favours they engaged in. "But well, since this is your fault again, I thought I'd have you make it up to, since you did swear to serve me for the rest of your life."

A slow shaking of the head.

"...and what do you wish of me that you couldn't get from anyone else...Luna?" the lecturer asked pointedly, a tiny frown creasing his lips.

"Something unconventional, something different...!" the blonde demanded, stamping her foot. "Something that isn't the corridors of the Tower, or a place with nobles. I mean, it's not that I want to go somewhere with you or anything, I just thought it'd be convenient since you're in this stuffy office all day."

"Something not related to magecraft, I suppose?"

    "Please."

Wracking his brain for something, he seemed to remember flyers he'd seen around London advertising events, two of which sounded interesting in particular.

"Well, there is a new exhibition at the Barbican Centre which opens today," he noted, trying to recall the details. "If I remember, its about the Digital Revolution."

    "...digi-tal?"

"Oh, you know, art, music, games--"

"Oh, you mean like that delightful thing you had me play. Journey, I think it was!" the Archibald heiress exclaimed, clapping her hands.

"Yes. Just so," Waver answered, smiling despite himself. Luna always had the ability to get him excited even when he didn't want to be - which probably boded ill for who wore the pants in their relationship, but he'd never held illusions about that. "Then after that, perhaps we could enjoy an evening of classical music at the BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall?"

The world's largest music festival, featuring the finest orchestras and performers from around the globe, it was not something to missed.

"Its a date then! Let's go," she said, grabbing his arm and dragging him out the door.

Perhaps not too surprisingly for someone on the arm of lovely, enthusiastic young woman, Waver chose not to complain. Besides, it might even be fun.

'How did it come to this?' A certain Storyteller thought to himself as he slowly munched on his unknown serving of rib-eye (He had lost count after reaching somewhere along the double digits) as he looked at the corner of his eye to see his opponent the fearsome Aozaki devouring plate after plate of what used to be an entire herd of cows.

Maybe two but again he lost track and is only estimating by the rising stacks of plates on the counter. However, for the storyteller this is not what is getting him so riled up for he and Aozaki had several bouts in the past involving contests like these. Epic tales of close competitions of gluttony and face stuffing that lead to several establishment kicking them out or even closing early due to lack of supplies leaving only scraps and terror for all-you-can-buffets owners. Seeing Aozaki besting him in such contests does not bother him but in fact inspired him to study on ways and methods to improve his skills to one day bring down the bottomless pit.

Being outmatch to the red haired devourer of all that is edible is a common sight.

Being outmatch by a blue duck who is even giving his rival a hard time is not.

'I can't keep pace with them I need help'
The Storyteller thought to himself and needed something decisive in order to defeat the black holes sitting next to him. "Come to me, Savonarola!"

He turned to call on his eternal companion, the one who was beside him when he was saved by his benefactor, the one who stayed with him during troubled times of both body and mind, the one he considers a friend who will always stand by him no matter what the challenge!

Who is quietly sitting a couple of tables away from him as he uses both of his spoons to sample some of the local soups and stews before looking toward his master with the expression that conveys 'What do you want now?'

"Quickly Savonarola! Join me on this epic campaign to bring down Aozaki and the duck once and for all together we can..."

    "...."

Before he can continue the storyteller was elegantly cut off by his daemon as he continued sampling the soups.

"What do you mean I'm on my own on this?" The Storyteller replied shocked at his partner's refusal to help. "We can do this!"

The daemon looked at his master and then to the two vacuums that can barely be called human or daemon judging by the scene and their ever rising towers of plate before looking at his master again.

"...." He replied though a psychic type, he didn't need to be one to see where this will end.

"It is not hopeless!" He declared a look of shaken but not broken determination lit in his eyes. "When times look there toughest you must go onward and preserve, only then we can attain victory!"

"...." Savonarola advised him but was ignored as his master let our a war-cry digging into his rib-eye with vigor as he poured BBQ sauce on it.

Several minutes and plates later the Storyteller with BBQ sauce smearing his face, his hat swaying in the breeze of the air conditioning almost symbolic of his last stand collapsed on his newly polished plate, his body unmoving due to him being in a food coma.

Savonarola will never forget his master's bravery (Read as stupidity) in face of such adversity as he watched the contest continued.

Lloyd had enough self-control and awareness not to go searching for knowledge on magi-turned-Dead Apostles, which honestly did not interest him, or the far more alluring magi-turned-elemental. With all its scrolls, tomes, volumes, records, and miscellaneous forms of written research and history within the libraries, Lloyd was only interested in a few things. His family library already had most of those that composed the sections on Curses and Spirit Evocation, though fewer of the latter, so in that area he had picked up merely a few more esoteric texts to study.

However, the main attraction was the book by Lord El-Melloi II on the fourth Holy Grail War in Fuyuki, Japan. It was a roundabout way of gaining what he wanted, of course - a wish, a miracle granted to the last magus standing. He certainly could reach for the Root, the Akashic Record, but he was far more interested in using it to gain that which he had wanted.

Certainly he could wish for the scars from his brother's curses to be healed, but that was not enough. No, it was only enough if he could shed off the weakness of humanity. If that meant becoming a DAA or elemental - though he favored the latter - so be it.

He knew that it had been done before, though he knew no names and was not foolish enough to start asking questions in the wrong place, time, or way. Certainly going through the trials and participating in the Grail War were not the only ways to gain such knowledge, but this, at least, was something that he could try. Should he fail, there was still the chance to impress one of the upper echelons of the various "moonlit" organizations in his attempt.

As he sat and read, he gripped the vest and shirt covering his abdomen tightly, a gesture in such a place only his Daemon, Houndoom, would recognize. He had sworn on that day strip away weakness and strive for strength. While he was not arrogant, if someone from a "no name" magus family like Lord El-Melloi II could rise to such heights in rank from a Holy Grail War, why couldn't he attain his wish?

Today is supposed to be a special day. The day that the House of Welf have been looking up to for some time, yet, it all seems rather mundane as I pick apart course after course of my breakfast with only my parents as company.

"The new El-Melloi is ill-preparing these participants he is inviting for actual conflict! To think that I would see the day that an El-Melloi would bend to the whims of the other branches of the Association! Disgusting!"

And again, my father drags on about his complaints concerning El-Melloi II.

"And now the trials are nothing more than games worthy for a child partake in! If things were done my way I would-"

"Dear, it would be prudent if you deal with the situation at hand rather than gripe about how things should be. Did you not have something to say to our son before he left?"

"I suppose you're right, again. Son, I have nothing but the utmost confidence that you can exceed the competition once you enter the Grail War even if you are a bit inexperienced in fighting as much as I was at my age. As for passing the trivial games that El-Melloi II has prepared for you, I will help you as best as I can."

He then pulls three letters and a book.

"One of these letters contain a note from me allowing you access to a number of restricted sections in the library within the facility for the Grail War contestants while this book contains a number of mysteries unique to the House of Welf. I trust that you will be able to use these well?"

I affirm while my mother then speaks up.

"As for the other two letters, it would be rude of us if we do not offer a token of appreciation for our allies. Do be sure to personally deliver those invitations to their respective owners."

Looking at the letters, it appears that the invitations are going to those two. I guess that Luvia must have came up with a scheme with my mother if the Tohsaka is to be invited to our dinner as well. It should prove to be amusing, at the very least. Although, if I am to meet with those two while still making my appointment, I should meet up with the receptionist soon.

Being in front of the receptionist, I might as well go straight to the point.

"I would like to know the whearabouts of Tohsaka and Edelfelt. In addition, I would like to confirm the appointment that El-Melloi II has made with me."

You are Kirei. You've always been a little different from the rest. You probably have low social skills. Whatever, it's not like what they think matters anyway. Ever searching for something missing within you, you probably don't experience the same happiness as everyone else. Good and evil are just labels, you are who you are.

Bored. Bored, bored, bored, bored. Akimitsu sighed, his hands placed firmly on his hips. Is this what the mages out west called fun? He couldn't see it. Kirlia floated next to him, his hand resting on Akimitsu's shoulder. "I know this isn't what you want, but you should try and relax." Kirlia's thoughts filtered into Akimitsu's head, and Akimitsu nodded. Kirlia was right of course. If he couldn't find entertainment here, he'd just have to keep looking until he found something to do. Akimitsu giggled, as he spun around casually, soon having left the dull place behind him.

Kirlia struggled to keep up. For all that he wasn't physically active, he was light on his feet. It didn't help that he seemed to move in a very erratic movements, never keeping to the same path. Kirlia knew it was just how he was, but it did make it difficult at times. "You might want to consider focusing a bit and actually settling down." Kirlia's tone was slightly sharper than before, but Akimitsu paid it little heed. He looked around, as his eyes wandered back and forth, looking at the myriad of places that he could go to. "This way!"

He continued down the hallway, his pathway still disorienting and without real direction. Left or right, back and forth, but eventually he came to a stop. "Kirlia, look at all of this." A library, no doubt housing many books indeed. Kirlia smiled, glad his partner had stopped. It might not hold his interest for long, but any time where he wasn't chasing Akimitsu was time he could spend on something a little more worthwhile. He didn't want to imagine what Akimitsu would be like without him around.

Akimitsu looked around, his lips pushed out as he pouted. None of the books here were interesting. They were all boring things, all about the best items for your Daemon, or how to ensure they grew properly. He didn't care about that. He wanted something fun and exciting. There weren't even many people in here. Akimitsu held out his arm, and spun around, his eyes closed. Once he'd had enough fun, he opened them and started to walk. Kirlia followed behind him, knowing that Akimitsu was about to do something childish. Akimitsu's hand had pointed at a man, and Akimitsu was now determined to entertain himself. "Hey, whatcha doing?" Akimitsu leaned over the table, as he tried to look at what the man was reading.

Octavia Leyland, receptionist of the Clock Tower (and thus one of the more practically powerful people there, since the Lords never kept their appointments straight, or seemed to remember where things were), was not one to be too unhappy with her job. For one, the people who came through the door were usually interesting, if slightly off-beat, much like the academics who haunted the office spaces in the rest of the museum - just a bit more powerful. It was as if the Clock Tower was a university, where the administration had all gained magical powers, the chancellor decided to play hikkomori in his office for the last two millennia, the vice-chancellor went off hunting vampires (or white whales or what have you), and the bureaucrats left in charge.

    In other words, a mess.

At least it meant she was well supplied with material for her latest series featuring a boy discovering his magical heritage for the first time, only to find that the magical world was a dangerous place mired in tradition, with purebloods bemoaning the rising fortunes of those with no magical lineage. Apparently, people found it popular, much as one of her distant relations, a game designer, had enjoyed the concept of elemental monsters one could capture in a quest to be the greatest master.

What could she say? Some themes were timeless...

I mean, with examples like Albert of Welf, who almost looked like he'd stepped out of the 19th century, given that he wore his formal robes all the time, one might even think so. At least he normally had simple questions and didn't have his daemon out most of the time - that tended to raise questions - and had raised more until a line of stuffed animals modeled on daemons had come out.

Let us simply say she did not have to worry about money.

    Ever.

"Ah, Miss Tohsaka? She is at Heathrow, meeting one of our distinguished guests for the ceremony," she relayed, all the while scribbling down a few notes. "Miss Edelfelt is in her office going over some paperwork. And unfortunately, Lord El-Melloi II is out of the office. He and his fiancee left not too long ago, presumably on one of their romantic outings."

Aoko Aozaki, after a good, filling meal, stretched and yawned contentedly as she stepped out into the sunshine. It had been a good long time since she'd been able to eat quite as much as she wanted. Hey, the prana she used needed to come from somewhere - it wasn't easy to be able to alter the course of time.

There were events to ensure happened, events to keep from happening, people who could not meet no matter what - all sorts of things to keep reality from collapsing into some screwed up timey wimey ball.

Even so, watching the Association declare a Code Blue whenever she got near one of their eateries was amusing, since they knew they couldn't just ban her. Other restaurants could - and had - given her voracious appetites, but the Association practically bent over backwards to cater to the whims of the Magicians. It was as if they were afraid she'd wipe London off the face of the Earth if she didn't get her way.

...not that she couldn't, if she wanted to, but that was besides the point.

    Still...

"...that was a good meal, right, Psyduck?" she asked her blue-tinted avian companion, who waddled out of the dining hall after hall, levitating the unconscious bulk of the Storyteller with him. "And...oh hey, I remember this guy."

"Psy! Psy psy psyyyyy-duck," the daemon squawked, much to Aoko's bemusement. "Duck! Duck psy duck!"

"What? He smells of R'lyeh, where the Old One lies sleeping?" the Magician asked quizzically. "Are you sure this is the guy?"

"Psy psyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!" the duck quacked, lifting the human a little higher. The human's Alakazam had decided not to put up a fight and had just retreated into the psychic's soul, just in case a quick get away was necessary.

"...come to think of it, the dossier did mention the R'lyeh text - almost Noble Phantasm grade in itself. I take it that's missing?"

    "Psyyyyy...."

At this, the duck cradled its head in its hands and shook his head, as if feeling ashamed.

Aoko sighed. This was going to be one of those very long days.

    "Anything else?"

    There was a hesitation.

    "Psy."

"Yeah, I don't buy that. You're hiding something, aren't you, duckie?" the Magician asked, this close to stepping on the avian.

    "Psy psyyyyyyyy psy duck."

"....a shadowy creature is consuming the daemons of the sea? With Sumire herself was injured by it?"

"Duck Duck duck psy psy duck."

"...well, good goddamn. Why didn't you get Ciel for this?"

    "....psyyyyyyyyy...."

The duck was rocking again, almost wailing at the thought.

"Ok, I know she doesn't like vampires, but still..."

    "Duck duck."

"....well, admittedly, Zekrom's lightning is a bit indiscriminate, I suppose. Too bad we don't know who has Kyurem, then we could just combine and help out down there."

    "...psy?"

Thinking Aoko wasn't going to help them, the duck looked at her despondently, its big blue-tinged eyes seeming to bore into her soul as it pleaded for the future of its people, for the safety of its Mistress.

"...ok, fine, I'll look into it," the Magician agreed. "And what do you plan to do with this guy? You do know that Velvet kid is going to be doing his tournament soon and he's one of the competitors, right?"

    "...duck."

"Yeah, I thought you'd say that. Look, we'll have to get him when he's awake - abducting him from the grounds will be trouble unless Ryoko is around. Besides, I don't sense anything that powerful on him."

"Psy," the duck squawked, hanging its head and wriggling itself back and forth in confusion, as if it was developing a headache. A very, very bad headache. It had never liked London. Why couldn't Sumire have sent another daemon for this job? Maybe get one of the Swords of...oh right, Dead Apostle.

"I didn't say we had to let him go - why don't you show me just how far you can lift him," the magician said half-jokingly. "You were bragging about how high you'd levelled dealing with some of the krait and other more unpleasant things of the sea. Even something about an undead ghost ship."

"Psyduck!" the daemon responded, raising its head, saluting - and shooting the hapless Storyteller high into the sky, until he was only a speck to be seen. "Psyyyyyyyyyyyyy-duck!"

"...you sure you have control of that?" Aoko questioned, half curious and a hint worried. Sumire's creatures could be a bit...over the top sometimes.

"Psy-y-y?" the duck said, shrugging almost in relief, his entire body seeming to relax.

"All I'm going to say is this better not get me more paperwork. Or we're having Peking style tonight."

    "Psy."

The duck paled, almost turning ashen white.

"...this isn't going to get me more paperwork, right?"

    "...duckkkkkk."

And with that, the rest of its color drained away.

Perhaps the rumors that the current Archibald head is engaging in dalliances might not be so far from the truth, especially since he is normally punctual in his meetings? I was trying to find some other form of leverage, but this might warrent further investigation. Still, I do have other responsibilities to care for even if they are born of minor schemings. Best not to upset mother unnecessarily.

    "...."

"Just five more minutes...." The Storyteller mumbles as his faithful companion tactfully and kindly tells him to wake him as he emerged from his master's soul to sit atop of his back

"But Mom I don't want to go to school today!" He whines backs shifting in his sleep.

"....." His faithful Daemon replied his brow twitching before his master slowly opened his eyes.

"Oh right, I don't have one of those."

    "...."

"Both I guess, My benefactor is my benefactor certainly not like a mom and traveling with her certainly doesn't count as a standard education so you'll be right on both accounts."

    "....."

"You raise a good point that she was considered my guardian at least which fits under the definition of parental figure and while it is unconventional the education is much more productive then the regular school systems." Both Magus and Daemon contemplated the situation of his status he sees something strange, long, and green at the corner of his eye before suddenly disappearing just as fast.

"Hey Savonarola, you saw that right?" The Storyteller asked his daemon trying to confirm what he has seen wasn't some delusion.

"..." He replied as he also looked at the same area where he had scene the figure.

"You saw it too huh? But what the hell was a giant green eastern dragon flying over the skies of London?" The Storyteller pondered before realizing an important fact. "Wait, why am I over London!"

He looked down and saw the very, very, very long drop down and the entirety of London in all it's majesty.

and took it a him approximately 3.4 seconds to take in the sights before doing what every normal person should be doing in his predicament which is to panic.

    "Why am I doing here!"

    "...."

"Of coarse, I just noticed between our conversation, the giant dragon, everything else it just became aware to me I'm floating in the sky!" The Storyteller answered back to which his daemon only sighed and shook his head. "Oh, Don't give me that put me down please!"

Savonarola gave a brief nod before gathering his energy to teleport his master ou-

"Wait, wait, wait!" He interrupted his daemon as he pointed down to where his rival and the duck. "Send us there."

"....." His Daemon asked his expression conveying disbelief.

"Oh coarse, it is customary to meet out rival after such a fierce eating competition!" He explained to his daemon as if it were common sense.

    "...."

"Starting now, customs have to begin sometime why not now?" He shrugged his shoulders. "Besides we haven't talked in awhile should be a interesting experience."

    "...."

Smoke bombs fell from the sky nearly hitting the red haired magicians and it's duck ward releasing its contents shadowing them in its darkness.

"I have returned Aozaki!" The Storyteller's voice echoed from the darkness the direction of which it was coming from unknown. "That prank with me flying in the sky was a bit much but I had seen some interesting things up there so I forgive you for that. However!"

"To use your daemon that's cheating!"

"....." Savonarola responded back from within the shadows as well.

"That's different since we always did that when we challenged her and you abandoned me when I needed you!"

    "...."

"Tactical retreat my ass!" The Storyteller replied sounding very annoyed at his partner as the smoke slowly dissipated during their squabble.

To reveal the Storyteller laying on his stomach to the floor while his Daemon casually sitting on top of him.

"Why are you still sitting on top of me?" He asked just realizing his predicament in front of Aozaki and the duck.

    "...."

"Oh right, Teleport just takes us from place to place doesn't exactly change our positioning...." The Storyteller replied as he nodded to himself remembering the lesson his daemon taught about his skills before shifting his head towards the pair who he was talking to. "Now where were we again?"

Toushirou wasn't lost, not really. But he was in no hurry to reach anywhere that had to deal with the tournament just yet, so he had decided to loiter in one of the airport's restaurants for a short meal before leaving. Which meant that he had walked around the place in exploration until he ended up eating in a Sushi bar called Yo! Sushi. It had ended up being a wise choice as far as taste was concerned, despite everything.

He had very little Japanese, or English pride. Or pride for any nation for the matter.

After finishing his lunch and stopping by Shake-A-Hula, a milkshake bar, for an intriguing and later rewarding offer for a peanut butter milkshake while I was on my way to catch a taxi. Finishing it while switching between slowing down to savor it and speeding up to leave the increasingly busy building faster, I was soon sitting and on my way to the Clock Tower.

Lloyd was not normally approached by others, so for someone - even a young, pink-haired boy - to do so was abnormal in his mind. His focus shifted between the boy and his Daemon, a Kirlia, as he looked up from his readings. Houndoom, who had laid down at Lloyd's feet, decided to come to attention and sit by the melancholic tween. "Ah. I'm doing some studying and reading."

He wasn't sure what to say besides that; he didn't interact with people younger than himself often. As for his readings, he had only chosen a few books on curses and spiritual evocation, with the book on the Holy Grail War(s) being the oddball out; only a few people would be interested in these topics, and those interested in the third could be potential enemies.

Akimitsu nodded, looking at the books. Then he poked the books, including the one in Lloyd's hand. Kirlia looked startled as Akimitsu picked up one and opened his mouth, but it seemed to be nothing more than a yawn. "Nope, these are boring too." Akimitsu looked at Lloyd's Houndoom and jumped in excitement. "So cute!" Akimitsu ran over and crouched on his knees, as he looked at the Houndoom with serious intent. Eventually Kirlia tugged on his shoulder. "It's rude to stare like that." Akimitsu pouted, his shoulders slumped. "But it's a cute doggy. Everyone loves cute doggy's. I bet even he loves them." Akimitsu looked over at Lloyd as he said the last statement.

Akimitsu got up off of his knees and climbed onto the table, sitting next to the pile of books. "So... what are you doing now? Not still reading right? You should come do something fun with me. We could go play fetch, I like doing that." Kirlia mentally sighed. It was as though the concept of self-control was completely foreign to Akimitsu. They were effectively strangers here, and Akimitsu was trying to drag some random person off on one of his antics. There was only so much minding that Kirlia could handle after all.

Lloyd didn't like having his reading material being called boring. It certainly wasn't the sort of thing he would have read at the boy's age - when he was most interested in Daemons and had applied that interest into good study, but as a magus the boy should have enough patience to do more than just skim through bits and pieces of the books. Magi children were held to a higher standard than those outside the "moonlit" world. He had learned that lesson far better than he had wanted. Though, from the boy's features, he was not of western lineage and most likely eastern magi did things differently.

Lloyd wondered to himself if he could have been as happy a child as this if he had been born into an eastern cursecraft family, but dismissed the errant thought.

Houndoom was caught between annoyance at being called "cute" and a "doggy" and contemplating the enjoyment gained from "fetch".

Oh, Lloyd spent more time with Houndoom than with any other being and the morose tween did play with his Daemon, but it something guarded close to Lloyd's heart. If his family knew he was acting like a foolish child, there would be consequences; he had no doubt that the family ties at the Clock Tower would be keeping an eye on him.

"I'm sorry, but I don't think we could. After this I intended to go to a recommended magi bar in town."

Alfredo PakPak nicknamed ALF was currently having entered London, check in the hotel and set some basic boundary fields to hide himself and his important belongings that he wasn't stupid enough to enter the clocktower with was now checking over himself in a mirror after switching to his proffered clothes. The Mirror showed an androgynous teen with silver hair tied by a yellow ribbon in a Ponytail, black eyes and light brown skin. He was wearing a black airman jacket which hid his well trained physique, a simple white T-shirt underneath, a modified blue sport pants to have pockets and goggles resting on his neck.

Satisfied with his appearance he took the backpack he had prepared last night and did last check. Some change clothes, a fake coded diary and notes on his magecraft, some snacks, water bottle and a simple switch knife. That done looks he did quick sweep on his room and satisfied that there were nothing that would show were his real belongings were hidden. With that done Alfredo decided to leave he opened the window that led the backstreets of the hotel being in the second floor it was easy for him to jump and land safely on the ground, a quick check showed that nobody noticed him. With that done Alfredo PakPak walked to the direction of the clock tower while the employees believed that the client that was in Room101 was asleep from exhaustion.

Akimitsushook his head. "Nope, fetch must happen." Akimitsu picked up a book and tossed it up in the air. "Yep, this one." Akimitsu tossed the book off to the side, away from Houndoom. "Go get it, go get it!" Kirlia watched the entire thing take place in slow motion, unable to do anything. "Akimitsu! What on earth do you think you're doing?" At under three feet it would scarcely be impressive normally, but with the rage that flashed on his face, Kirlia looked far more intimidating than most. "This is a library, not a playground. Do you have any idea what you're doing?" Kirlia bowed to Lloyd. "My apologies for this interference, he is not very good at controlling himself sometimes." Kirlia was unused to broadcasting his thoughts this way, but it was slightly more polite than speaking to Lloyd directly in his mind.

Akimitsu crawled under the table, as he started to pout. Darn Kirlia again, always ruining the fun. He knew that Kirlia was right, but he was tired of it. His family had finally given him a chance to get out from under their thumb. Being able to make his own decisions made it the best time he'd had so far. But Kirlia always made sure he didn't get to have his way. There was nothing he could do that didn't seem to result in him getting in trouble. Don't throw books, don't go into the forest, don't pet the wild spirits. Rules, rules, rules. And there was Kirlia, trying to apologize for something when he didn't need to. Nothing he did ever made Kirlia happy.

Lloyd wasn't sure how to react to the sudden event. He didn't know how to interact with children, magi or not. He knew how to interact with Daemon slightly better - an oddity he was told. He didn't like to see a book treated like that, and knew that the librarian would not be pleased at all, but at the same time he felt some sympathy for the boy.

"Ah, I'm not angry. As long as the book isn't damaged permanently, it's alright, really. And," he had to pause to look to his Daemon, who peered under the table at the pink-haired boy with a curious tilt of the head, "well, Houndoom wouldn't have caught it anyway. A Daemon of Fire doesn't really say 'handle with care' when it comes to books, you know?" As he said this, he pushed his chair back and went to retrieve the book; checking the binding and pages, there were a few bent pages, but no tears. No one would have to know it was thrown, and magi had a tendency to treat all books they picked up as their own - dog-earing was a common enough practice.

"Do either of you like board games, perhaps? Or card games?" Both were common enough throughout the magi world, after all.

Akimitsu sniffed, as he crawled out from under the table. He shuffled over towards Houndoom, Akimitsu's sadness still evident on his face. "What are board games?" Akimitsu reached out to touch Houndoom, as he tried to calm himself down. Kirlia shook his head, and went over to rest his hand on Akimitsu's shoulder. "You know you need to control yourself better." Kirlia turned to face Lloyd again. "Akimitsu hasn't had much interaction with people outside of his family. The only others he's interacted with would be Daemon's, which aren't always the best to teach someone proper social skills." Kirlia ruffled Akimitsu's hair, glad that the situation seemed to be moving towards resolution without much drama. It wasn't good that Akimitsu had done what he had, but it also wasn't something that had resulted in any permanent damage, which was something Kirlia had been worried about.

Oh. Lloyd hadn't expected to garner such an emotional response, but everyone had baggage they carried around. Magi were especially bad at it, and magi children were taught early on that emotions were to be locked away. He knew that all too well.

Kirlia turned to face Lloyd again. "Akimitsu hasn't had much interaction with people outside of his family. The only others he's interacted with would be Daemon's, which aren't always the best to teach someone proper social skills."
"Well, I can't blame him - I tend to prefer interacting with Daemons compared to other people. Granted, I only share soulful secrets with Houndoom, but Daemon tend to be very good listeners. As for what board games are, well, they're games played on boards carved from wood or stone where each player has 'pieces' to move around in order to win." Pausing for a moment, he sat back down, offering the boy a seat.

"Chess and Checkers are the two most well known examples I can think of. Your trying to eliminate the other player's pieces from across the board in both; it's just that Checkers is a lot more straight forward, while Chess is more strategic."

If one asked for a list of the best daemon users in the Clock Tower, one might name the Director and Vice-Director - the latter often referred to as the Tower's "Queen." One might think of the Lords or the Heads of the various departments - especially the department of Spiritual Evocation. One might think of the Wizard Marshal and his legendary beast.

...one would not likely think of Shauntal de Maquin, the Librarian of the Clock Tower, and keeper/protector of its halls of knowledge. Rather bookish by nature, and more interested in stories and spirits, she is not commonly thought of as a threat - unless one has the distinct misfortune to either cross her by damaging a book or harming someone before her eyes. Then, one might learn how she had acquired the rank of Grand, as well as the epithet "Ender of Tales", the dark flames of Chaundelure being the last time her enemies ever saw, with escape impossible.

She did not have a proper workshop, per se, simply claiming the libraries as her own. And the different departments allowed it, given that none of them wanted one of the others to have a hold over the libraries - they might not necessarily like or trust her, but at least she was a neutral party.

She'd heard a loud commotion in the library and had gone to investigate, finding two young magi with their daemons out - and a book that seemed mistreated. She frowned at this and stepped forward, making their presence known.

"The library is not a place for daemons to play," she noted, looking at the two of them with a sharp expression. "For that, you should use one of the workshops set aside for the use of our guest masters. And books especially are not to be damaged, on pain of death or dismemberment."

Sion Eltnam Atlasia, Director of Atlas, did not generally like to fly. It was a long and weary process, involving travelling to an airport, sitting in somewhat uncomfortable seating for hours on end, and being frustratingly out of touch with what was happening at the Academy. Ever since she had returned to Atlas and become Director, she had hardly left the facility - and one could hardly blame her knowing all that she had to do. Like most academics, she had plenty of infighting to deal with, though at least there were no publish or perish concerns.

...and it was good there was not, as the Philosopher's Stone was the deepest secret of Atlas, beyond the many weapons it produced to help in saving the world, and too many would have sought to steal it. Immortality and a cure for vampirism was no joke, after all. Still, due to her need for secrecy, but desire for capable help, she had managed to recruit a useful young man from the Tower though, one skilled at Structural Analysis - and as it turned out, the owner of a reality marble in which were cataloged innumerable holy and demonic swords.

He understood at a glance how something worked - why it worked - and unlike most magi, was a kind and understanding gentleman. She thought he might have an interest in Alchemy, given how he used the kitchens so often - as some did like them as a kind of impromptu lab - but he really just liked to cook. And he liked to see people smile, something that Sion found odd, but when she looked into his mind during their private sessions, she would see no guile or malice there - just a distorted self standing on a hill of swords.

She had appointed him her Second, and her Knight, giving him a set of equipment for combat - and for protection in some of the more dangerous laboratories, which amounted to more or less the same thing. A red mantle made from a holy shroud to ward off interference from the world. Black and silver armor meant to amplify his skill with reinforcement and act as an extra layer of defense.

...Shirou had become more contemplative after that, not knowing how to react to the gift. Perhaps he thought that wearing it would turn him into the "Archer" so often featured in his dreams of the past, even more so than the fact that he was beginning to look like said heroic spirit.

They spent a lot of time together, and perhaps not too surprisingly, there were rumors that she and Shirou were more than just Director and Knight - apparently Shirou was known at the Tower for being something of a ladies' man, and it was thought that she had seduced him or vice versa. This had led to some tension from the Tohsaka heiress - the one who was assigned to meet them as they disembarked from their chartered plain from Cairo.

The weather is not dissimilar to Japan in some ways
, she thought to herself. But...

    Shirou was nervous.

"Attend me, Emiya-san," the Director ordered, as Shirou fell into step beside her, with her hand resting in the crook of his arm as they walked out of the terminal, past customs. They looked, for all the world, like a well-to-do couple, given that Sion was in more casual clothing, while Shirou himself wore a black shirt and slacks, with a good looking red overcoat.

They proceeded past customs without incident to the waiting area, where Tohsaka caught sight of them - and immediately bit back the impulse to scowl.

"Tohsaka? I didn't know you'd be the representative that El Melloi sent to meet us," Shriou spoke, smiling at Rin - who did not return that smile. "Last time, he had one of the Enforcers do it."

Rin muttered something unintelligible under her breath and shook her head.

"....baka Shirou, going off and being that Director's.... Would you have preferred an Enforcer, Emiya-kun?" the Tohsaka heiress asked sweetly - too sweetly. "Perhaps McRemitz-san who you seem to be on such good terms with?"

    "Umm...Tohsaka...is something wrong?"

"Oho...of course, not Emiya-kun," Rin replied, her brow furrowing. "Even though your flight arrived an hour ago and you are only now coming through the door? I can see you are getting along well with the Director."

There was something of a dangerous edge to her voice - a subtle one, but present nevertheless. Rin clearly knew the rumors - and being somewhat insecure, seemed to have accepted them hook, line, and sinker. Sion supposed that her mode of dress did not help, but that was how things were.

"Greetings, representative of the Clock Tower, apprentice to the Wizard Marshal," Sion cut in, nodding to the one sent by El Melloi. "I am Sion Eltnam Atlasia, Director of Atlas Academy."

"Yes," Rin ground out between her teeth. "I bid you...welcome to London. Shall we go to the Clock Tower, or is there anywhere in particular you were hoping to go?"

"Actually, Tohsaka, Sion wanted to go to a new exhibit that was opening at a museum today," Shirou broke in, much to Rin's disgruntlement.

'You're on first name terms with her?!'

"...right. Well, let us get your things dropped off first, and then we can proceed. I'm sure Emiya-kun can play tour guide, after all the times Edelfelt-san, Leyland-san, McRemitz-san and I have helped him get around. "

"Yes, Emiya Shirou is quite a gentleman," Sion noted. "I have been well pleased by his performance. Undoubtedly your influence."

'And now she's flaunting it. Was it not enough that you took Shirou? Do you have to rub it in my face?!'

    Rin took a deep breath.

"There is an Association car outside. Let's head to the city, shall we?"

    "Psy psy!"

"Fine, I guess we won't eat Peking style tonight," Aoko observed, letting the daemon off the hook, since the subject of interests had now returned, just as she had predicted. She turned to the untidy lump with an Alakazam sitting on it. "Hello Storyteller. I hear you've been getting into a good deal of trouble."

    "Psy dudk duck!"

"Psyduck says that your Teleportation skills have now been disabled, and you should surrender to the Enforcers if you know what is good for you, since you're not entirely human. He says..." And here was where Aoko blinked. "that you are in fact something like the Deep Ones."

    "Duck duck, psyduck!"

"And that the only fate for Deep Ones is---not now, you cranky old duck," the magician noted, forcing the duck to look away through personality alone. "Ignore his ranting, Stoyrteller. But you and I are going to talk. Now."

It wasn't a request, and that was all that kept Psyduck from turning into an avatar of homicidal wrath...

In front of the receptionist Alf hid any feeling's he might have with a carefree smile before asking his question "Hello miss I'd like to know if the time for Trials have already been set and if so if there are anything we could or shouldn't do while waiting.

"Ah, I'm sorry for that, ma'am. Pardon the commotion; I was not intending to hide the damage to the book, but merely wanting to placate my acquaintance's Daemon's annoyance at the misbehavior and try to resolve the situation without bothering you." He looked between the librarian and the boy, clearly uncertain what to do. Seeing the Chandelure by the woman's side made him frown. Ghost types, and their magus, tended to hold grudges for a long time - he did not want to make an enemy of this woman. Did he throw the "sheep" to the "wolf" and be done with it? He, himself, had not caused any trouble. But at the same time, he didn't want to see the boy punished severely.

Ah, but that was weakness (kindness) and the boy apparently did not know the rules of the Clocktower anymore than he himself did. Which either meant he was a new student or one of the "Final Grail War" Trial participants. Attempt to help a potential, temporary ally? Listen to the weak [moral] part of his mind that wanted to protect the boy from harm like he had suffered? That complicated matters.

"The boy didn't mean any harm, ma'am, and the book is still in good shape, while the boy is distraught over personal matters. Could I perhaps implore you to reconsider harsh judgment?"
