The parts with Medea and Sakura are easily the worst part of the Deen adaptation though.

Like, I get that they were trying to cover some of the other aspects of the VN and that's cool, but the Caster arc is just terrible.

Even before I read the VN (Deen was my intro to Fate too) the whole thing just felt bad and tacked on.

Well the big reason why it felt tacked on was because there was such a lack of explanation in it, they used that underground temple unnecessarily, those flashbacks Rin had were on a level of vagueness that is Nasu approved, there were a lot of people who didn't know the brown haired young girl was supposed to be a young Sakura, and a lots of people were not catching the hints that were being dropped at all.

The biggest sin was that Shirou never asks about the connection Rin has to her (but then again it was canon that Shirou never really tries very hard to ask why she'd ask him if an adopted child is happy with the home they get placed in when he caught her standing outside the Matou household in UBW, so I let that slide), Sakura is just put in bed and Rin addresses nothing about these revelations the audience now knows ever again.

How do you think people would think of Shirou in HF? I'm kind of sad that people didn't like him in UBW, where he's supposed to at his best. But what do you think people would think of him in Heaven's Feel?

Probably the same. You shouldn't get so hung up on this. It's not like everyone has to like him.

I know not everyone has to like him, but considering the reception he has in the anime community, I'm kind of curious as to what people would think of him.

Should have some positive receptions for HF. He was pretty cool in the route for the most part, especially with the VS Berserker and Sparks Liner, though we probably won't get the latter animated.

You really think so? I thought he was cool first watching UBW at the end. But I admit, he was freaking badass against Saber and Berserker. What would people think of him forsaking his ideals to protect Sakura? A lot of people wanted Kiritsugu 2.0, and instead got Emiya Shirou.

I honestly don't see what's so much easier to understand about Kiritsugu's and Kirei's motivations relative to Shirou's.
Shirou wants to save the world because he saw the joy on Kiritsugu's face after being able to save just one person. What's so difficult to understand about that?

What's complicated around Shirou's motivations is that they're put into question by a realized version of his ideals. It's the ideological discussion about them that's kinda complicated, not the motivations themselves. And Zero does this with Kerry too showing the contradiction in his actions with his goals when the Grail chooses him, and in the end he loses and everything goes to shit.

If you were to ask me what I think could bring such different reactions to two guys that are almost identical motivation-wise is that Shirou is a nice guy while Kerry is Master Edgelord, and nice guys are "boring". That and out-of-context memes. Other than the obvious watering down of Shirou's character when translated to TV. We spend 90% of the game inside Shirou's head, that doesn't happen in the anime(s).
