That said, Nasu explicitly states that although prime!Zouken is capable of beating a servant under the right conditions, even he is only considered in the rank of Pride. So the ranks aren't necessarily good descriptors for how capable someone is at taking down an opponent, instead being more indicators of extreme specialization (i.e. closeness to the Root) and political pull. So it's still not that unbelievable that Darnic, a man who has a great deal more experience than most other living magi, would fare pretty well in a competition against them.

I've not seen the original japanese mats myself, but looking back at the translation it does seem to be inconsistent. Because before it mentions him as being at the Pride rank, it says that magi were only shifted up one rank due too the circumstance of the Apo world. So if his false rank is Grand, then his true rank should be Brand based upon that anyway. Chances are you're correct and Darnic is in fact comparable to Kayneth.

Still makes it all the more interesting that Zouken was only ever of Pride rank despite being able to tango with a servant.

I just checked the physical copy of Apo Material and it's a typo there. It says

プライド

色位

, so the kanji says Brand and the ruby says Pride. Given the context he is probably Brand.
