How are you configuring them anyway? Are you using mbaacctool?

I'm using all the tools that come with the package and the english configuration. I think there are two or three, including mbaacctool. I set them all up and the next thing I know arrow key down is trying to exit the game, arrow key right is arrow key down and accept is somewhere on the keyboard, fuck if I know where. It worked one time, after a reinstall, but then it just switched back after I'd started the game up again for the first time, for some reason.

Why the aversion? You could even play with a PS2 controller using an adapter.

Well, when you run the game, you run mbaacctool.exe, right?

If that doesn't work, try what Rikus posted, patch the exe and play it with MBAA.exe. It should work.

It's habit. I used to play fighter games including MBAC a lot in my PS2 before I started playing in PC. Before long the controller became like an extension of me, I couldn't get rid of it.

Oddly enough, it worked first time. The tool that came with it had set up player 2 controls on top of player 1 controls so they were all completely screwed.
