There's nothing ironic about this
whenever you remove someone like Saddam from power, there's a power vacuum
and where's not enough effort or preparation done to fill in that vacuum, another influence fills that in
and the replacement could very well be just as terrible or worse
That's the reason why the US government supports the Saudi and other bad people
because as bad as they are, they're the ones keeping a lid on other groups the US hates more. It's a case of lesser evil
But it's also a terrible solution, because keeping such people in power leads to resentment and people becoming radicalized
but back to IS
Jihad is a franchise, and IS is trying to carve out their own piece of the pie
They did not meet success earlier because regardless of overlapping ideology, IS is foreign fighter driven

With Iran at least you can reason and negotiate. And let's face it, Iran is supposedly notorious for zealotry but it is not nearly bad as Saudi Arabia.
