Man it's really a shame the anime didn't keep the Amakusa vs Achilles fight, there's some good stuff there.

Also Chiron's interactions with Caules make me laugh.

Fiore's gaze had only eminated a slight chill compared to Magnificant True Heroine's tone which had dropped to absolute zero.

In before mind blowing revelations and scenes not seen in the adaptation.

Studio did an okay job so far, but with this much scene being left out, welp.
    Not dealing with it...

    Why even try?

There had been no significant developments to the city of Trifas - despite neighbouring Sighisoara, the most important city of Romania - and that was not likely to change.

The Prestone family, from where Darnic came before he took up the name Yggdmillennia, had their sights set on settling in the area due to it possessing the greatest leylines of Romania. Naturally, such qualities would not have gone unnoticed and much blood had been spilt over these lands, but in the end the others were no match for the rising Prestone family.

The Prestones aggressively sought control of the city. Instead of watching over the settlement as it grew normally, they took pains to involved themselves so that it would develop into a city ideal for them. It would neither stand out nor leave any mark in history. Similar to its neighbour, it was inconvenient to traverse, naturally reducing the level of tourism.

And despite possessing leylines of the highest quality, outside magi would not be able to do as they please with the close network and cordon that had been set up. The bounded field overlaid across the region was highly sensitive and would signal even normal humans coming from the outside, much less foreign magi. It took twenty long years for Alma Petresia, the observer from the Holy Church, to dispel the suspiscion around her.

In short, Trifas was a city under the domination of magi. If you were to include their non-magi affiliates, over a fifth of the city's total population was involved with the Yggdmillennias in some way. Naturally, they had all received some form of instruction in regards to the Holy Grail War, as well. Although the streets remained peaceful, the mood was nothing if not charged.

Darnic, the Yggdmillennia head, had fallen. However, there were not yet many who knew about it - and even fewer who realised what a peculiar turn this War had taken. Fiore had kept everything under wraps to prevent any information from leaking out. The Association would find out sooner or later, but for now, their priority laid with resolving the War.

'Contact has been lost with ten of the magi hidden around Trifas.'

Following the information Fiore provided, Jeanne and Astolfo - together with a homunculus skilled with magecraft - decided to begin by looking for their traces.

Trifas was divided between the walled old city, and the new city built outside the walls - although the 'new' was relative, as most of the buildings there began construction after the expelling of the Ottoman Turks and had hundreds of years of history.

Jeanne, Astolfo, and Althea proceeded to the new city. Meanwhile, Chiron and Caules were responsible for the old city. The plan was to proceed to the hideouts in separate groups, find out the reason for the loss of contact, and look for any clues.

"All right then, we'll start with the first one! Let's go to the magus's house!"

Astolfo punched the air in excitement. Jeanne appeared somewhat embarrassed as she distanced herself, and Althea calmly looked at a map of Trifas, both of them ignoring him. Puffing his cheeks, Astolfo lowered his hand.

"Carl Lexarm. Proceed two hundred metres and turn left at the crossing."

The three proceeded noisily down the sparsely traversed street, with most of the noise being generated by Astolfo. Before five minutes had passed, they had reached their first objective.

Lexarm's home was old and built of stone in a simple cube shape. An open house facilitated the dispersal of mana, making enclosed designs like this ideal for magi preferring to prevent such an issue.

Althea, using the master key provided by Fiore, released the spell-woven lock. It was made to alert the Yggdmillennia clan members in case of a forced entry, though it would hardly pose an obstacle if the intruder truly was Assassin.

The insides of the house was as frugal as one would imagine from its external appearance. There was a living room, a kitchen, and a washroom, with the bedroom most likely being on the second floor. Sterile, was the word that came to Jeanne. After living in the same place for a decade or two, most people would colour their surroundings in some way. But none of that existed in this house where everything seemed uniform, more like a hotel room than a personal abode. Perhaps he had only just moved here, or perhaps they would find his 'colour' in another room.

"Hm... can anyone smell that? Is it blood?"

Astolfo murmured as he stepped further in and began to sniff. Jeanne also detected a smell, but could not identify it as blood.

"I am not sure about that..."

"Am I just imagining it, then?"

    "Perhaps not."

Althea said as she weaved a one-line spell - a simple perception magecraft to identify 'blood'. A faint blue glow highlighted stains splattered all across the room.

"I see. So they cleaned it up. That's why it was hard to detect."

"Quite... impressive of you to sense that, Rider."

"Look, Ruler. There's even blood on the ceiling."

Astolfo pointed upwards and Jeanne nodded grimly. Given the height of the ceiling...

"...they must have decapitated him or crushed his head."

"Seeing how the blood covered such a wide area, perhaps they severed the carotids? And he bent backwards, like so..."

Jeanne looked up towards the ceiling and made a staggering motion while holding her throat.

    "Nice acting."

"I'm not sure it was necessary to demonstrate physically. Words would have sufficed."

Jeanne reddened at Astolfo and Althea's words and coughed.

"J-Just making it easy to understand. Anyway, it must have been quite a lot of work to clean up. Was it done by magecraft?"

"In that case, they would have left traces of such. There's none here."

"But this is a magus's house, right?"

"All the more reason for the use of magecraft to be carefully deliberated. This is the kitchen; nothing related to magecraft here. At most, he might have cut apart some small animals for use in rituals."

"Sounded like there's a basement, too. Maybe something's down there?"

Once again, it was Astolfo who noticed this. It seemed that he could hear the slight differences as he stepped on the flooring.

"So it is not just your nose, but your ears, as well..."

Jeanne muttered, sounding impressed. Astolfo thrust out his chest proudly.

"Noses and ears are important on the battlefield, after all!"

The entrance to the basement was hidden behind a bookshelf sitting by a wall in the living room. There were faint marks on the ground where the wheels of the bookshelf had slide back and forth many times.

"Wait, please let me disarm any magecraft there may be, just in case..."

Althea said this to deter Astolfo, who had a hand on the bookshelf as though to pull on it like a door handle - not that he would wait on advice. With a grunt of effort, he pulled up the bookshelf forcefully.

    "Got it!"

Astolfo said as he skipped down into the basement.

"Did you detect any sort of magecraft just now...?"

"Yes, but it had no effect given that Rider's Magic Resistance matches a Saber's."

A modern magus would not be able to harm Astolfo in any way. Whoever had infiltrated this place must have taken care to disarm the spell.

"Yay! I found a dead body!"

Hearing his words, the two hurried down into the basement.

The basement was utterly different from the simplicity of the living space above. Stacks of grimoires towered all around the room and the floor showed traces of old magical wards. Bundles of herbs and dessicated corpses of small animals hung from strings. In the middle of the room laid a human body - far fresher than the other objects in the room. The smell of blood hung heavy in the room.

"It seems this magus specialised in the dark arts."

Althea said as she examined the articles around the room. Jeanne and Astolfo pulled on the face-down corpse and grimaced at what they saw.

"His heart has been cut out."

"So they cut the artery, just like Ruler said, huh. But why hasn't anyone reported on such a strong smell of blood?"

    Althea answered Astolfo's question.

"The smell was probably suppressed by magecraft. Foul odours are common in dark rituals of this nature, so it must be concealed when performed in the city like so. That's likely why the corpse was hidden in this room... so that the smell doesn't spread."

"The problem is the heart. Fiore did mention this, did she not? That the newspapers said the Assassin of Black... that Jack the Ripper had carved out the hearts of victims."

    Astolfo agreed.

"Yeah, she did. To us, our spiritual cores also exist in our hearts, just like in our brains. Eating something close to that can give us a big supply of mana."

"However... that would not explain the expression of great pain on his face."

"What's so weird about that? He got his throat slashed open."

"Certainly, we Servants are eaters of souls, but the emotions we prefer to consume differ based on our idiosyncrasies in life. It would seem that Jack has a great preference for fear."

"Well, he was a serial killer..."

Leaving the corpse to be dealt with by the Yggdmillennias, Jeanne and the others continued their search across the new city. The next magus they visited, Silvelt Kotcheff, had also breathed his last in his own home. However, there was a decisive difference in his case. Unlike the previous, every part of his body had been ruined, aside from the heart. The magus had ceased to maintain the shape of a human being.

    "Now that just isn't nice."

    Astolfo sighed.

"These are clear signs of torture."

    Jeanne said coldly.

"Based on the biological response from his arm, most of these wounds were inflicted before his death. They didn't kill him by cutting him apart; they kept him alive until he was completely in pieces."

One could imagine how much suffering and terror he was made to endure merely by seeing the pain inflicted on his flesh. He must have known that no one would ever come to save him - and even if they had, they would have just became another victim.

"But what meaning could there have been to this?"

Jeanne murmured and the other two cocked their heads.

    "Maybe he just... enjoyed it?"

"Yes, there are certainly killers who enjoy causing pain. However, this is far too much in excess. And the corpse earlier had very few similar marks. His neck was simply cut and his heart gouged out. But here, the corpse was completely defiled. The difference is far too marked. Could there not be another cause for it? His gender, his age, his race, his profession, his abilities... or something besides."

    "And what would that be?"

Jeanne shook her head at Althea's question, unable to answer.

"If one thing is for certain, the Assassin of Black has almost certainly already arrived in the city... assuming this is not the work of some unrelated crazed murderous magus."

"So I guess the question is, where are they?"

Although a small city, Trifas was still home to nearly twenty thousand people. Most of the population, sensing the recent disturbances, had already been sitting at home and holding their breaths. It would be difficult to perform a house-to-house search even mobilising all of the magi - and if their pursuit was ever made known by mistake, Assassin would likely entrench even deeper into the shadows.

"Let us see to some of the other hideouts. There is little doubt that we will discover more bodies."

    Jeanne was right.

All of the corpses had had their hearts gouged out. However, the level of suffering they had endured before death all differed somewhat. There was no consistency to be found; one body found would have been reduced to piles of meat, but the next might be mostly undamaged aside from the hole in their chest.

Jeanne and the others spent the next several hours investigating for traces of magecraft, but they proved fruitless. Althea immediately contacted Fiore, but there was seemingly nothing of note connecting the varying levels of damage done to the bodies to their genders, age, or race. Even in the case of differences - such as the amount of torture performed on males versus females - it did not lead to a conclusive answer.

"It seems there are still three magi who are missing..."

"Master Caules is following up on those. Shall we regroup and compare our data?"

"Yes, let us head over to them."

Leaving the dead in the care of the Yggdmillennias, the three headed to the next house, where they would meet up with Caules.

"Our destination this time is in the old city."

Guided by Althea, the two walked along quiet stone-paved streets, occasionally glimpsing furtive shadows that maintained a healthy distance from the three strangers. Given the situation, they were thankful for the consideration.

"You know... all of these streets look pretty familiar, huh? We could have had some interesting battles in modern buildings if the Holy Grail War had been in New York or something!"

Astolfo griped as Jeanne gave a terse smile.

"My stomach churns just imagining a Holy Grail War happening in a place like Gotham, so please don't even suggest it."

How could she possibly take responsibility for a War like this taking place in such a large city?

"But we've got Holy Grail Wars happening all over the place now, right? It's only a matter of time until we get to New York. How could they keep things under wraps and all that in a big city? You'd probably get summoned as a Ruler again!"

Jeanne paled as she shook her hand and head at the same time.

"Oh, no no no. Please, stop making me picture it. That would be terrible!"

"Hahaha! Fate is a cruel mistress, young Ruler. One day, you'll be called to some Holy Grail War in America, or London, or Tokyo... and you'll have to preside over it. I'm sure of it!"

Perhaps the imagery in her head had become too strong, as Jeanne spoke to Astolfo with what sounded almost like resentment in her voice.

"You are quite the shrew, aren't you, Rider?"

"Hm, you think so? I thought I was just making some accurate predictions."

A snickering Astolfo covered his mouth as he smirked. Jeanne said quietly.

"I suppose you did want to come with Sieg instead, after all."

Astolfo stopped in his tracks and turned around, his face slightly red.

    "S-So?"

"It's nothing... I just feel like I have finally understood something."

"Ugh...! It really makes me mad for some reason when you just nod like you know everything!"

Their situation reversed as Jenne looked on impassively while Astolfo fumed at her. Hearing all of this going on behind her, Althea turned around and said.

"We'll reach the next house soon, you two, so please save your spat for later."

    "This is not a spat."

"If anything, what we're discussing is about ownership."

Were those not the same thing? Althea's expression seemed to say.

    * * *

Caules did not handle corpses well. Just seeing one was no great pain - but the smell was another matter entirely. This time, the smell was of burnt meat, but it did not smell foul. That made it all the worse, as it reminded him of the meals he had enjoyed, mixed with something overwhelmingly repulsive.

    "Are you all right?"

"I'm all right. I'm just... gonna throw up a bit."

Caules went over to the kitchen sink and vomited out the bacon he had eaten for breakfast. Having a meaty meal early in the day to keep his strength turned out to have been the worst decision to make.

"Damn... well, I'm not going to be eating meat for a while."

Caules, after emptying most of his stomach and washing out the aftertaste with a glass of water, finally calmed down enough to return to the basement.

    "Caules, this magus..."

"Avi Dicail. He specialised in summoning, just like me... but he was better. He was probably one of the Master candidates. You couldn't have asked for more in terms of ability, but it looks like his luck wasn't so good."

Caules checked the list of magi taken from Darnic's study, and sighed out in sympathy. However, he did not see it as a cruel twist of fate. The path of the magus was a cruel one to begin with; he just happened to have walked down the worst possible route.

"They burnt him to death, huh..."

"There are no traces of magecraft. They must have used that."

Chiron pointed to a jerrycan lying on its side on the basement floor. Caules removed the handkerchief covering his nose and could smell the gasoline in the underground air, even as he resisted the urge to throw up again.

"You think that they used gasoline?"

"Indeed. If this had also been the handiwork of Assassin, then it was a method most unfitting for the Class."

"What's even the point of it? Assassin wouldn't have had any problem killing a magus with their bare hands. Why did they bother?"

    "An observation well made, Caules."

Chiron raised up a finger in a teacherly manner.

"Well... not that I don't like being praised, but that's about the best that I can come up with. What's your theory on this, Archer?"

"It is still too early for theories. Besides, we cannot even be certain that this truly was the work of Assassin. Fistly, the killer burnt this magus."

As he said this, Chiron propped up the corpse - wrapped up in a fetal position - and gently stretched its limbs out. He pointed at the hole bore into its chest.

"Secondly, the killer gouged out his heart."

"Then it has to be Jack the Ripper. The news article said the same thing about him gouging out the hearts of his victims."

"It increases the possibility significantly. However, that conflicts with our first fact. I had read the article as well, but I did not recall it mentioning the killer burning his victims. Could you confirm that?"

    "Yeah, give me a moment..."

Caules took out his mobile phone and left the basement to make a call. After about five minutes, he returned wearing a bemused expression.

"I asked the people who are undercover with the Sighisoara police. All of the bodies had had their hearts gouged out. The cause of death was either that, or asphyxiation due to breathing difficulties. Either way, the hearts were all gone. But they never found any bodies that were burnt or broken up or suffered any sort of torture."

    "Hmm..."

Chiron looked at the corpse and considered the information. Caules tried to think of an answer as well, but there was no way for him to know the thought process of such a unique serial killer like Jack the Ripper. At most, he wondered if he possessed some sort of Mad Enhancement like Berserker despite being an Assassin.

    "Archer? You here?"

"It is us. We have finished our search for the magi in the new city."

Jeanne and Astolfo had arrived, along with Althea the homunculus.

    "How did it go?"

"All of their bodies were in the workshops in the basements. Things appear to be quite grim here, as well."

Jeanne covered her mouth as she looked at the corpse. Chiron and Caules shared a look.

"What about the bodies on your end?"

"Yeah... some of them just died from getting their hearts ripped out, others got minced up so bad it looked like something you could buy at the butcher's place. Quite a bit of variety."

Chiron considered the information gathered by Astolfo and Jeanne, slipping further into thought.

"So some of them had been tortured, but others had not. I see..."

    "What's the matter?"

Caules asked confusedly, and Chiron turned his head to face him.

"Something is still out of place. I do not see the necessity of any of this."

"Maybe it was just on a whim."

"I don't think so. Although my memorises of the Assassin of Black have vanished, I can still remember the circumstances. Seeing the battle between Mordred and Assassin, we sought to take advantage and fired. However, we did not manage to deal a fatal blow to either of them. Mordred had moved to engage us in turn, while Assassin retreated."

In other words, Assassin understood that the situation had turned disadvantageous and reversed tactics.

"Assassin isn't quite like a Berserker, then?"

"No. According at the news articles, Assassin had moved from Bucharest to Sighisoara, then to Trifas, killing dozens along the way. Yet not a single witness has come forth, nor would they, if none existed in the first place."

"So you think that Assassin is good at staying hidden."

"I see. After all, it was only because the Yggdmillennias were aware of these magi that we were able to locate them so quickly. We might not have ever found them if they had belonged to Association."

Caules and Jeanne both nodded, taken by Chiron's explanation.

"A reason must exist for this torture. Our problem now is how we would go about investigating that."

"Could we use psychoscopy to replay what was in his mind?"

Althea's suggestion left Caules open-mouthed. Certainly, there was a type of summoning magecraft that allowed you to play back the thoughts of what once existed in a place.

    "Is it possible, Caules?"

The gazes of Chiron, Jeanne, Astolfo, and Althea all turned to him.

"Um, yeah, I mean, sure... I can, probably, I think."

"Come on, pull yourself together! You can do it! Have some faith, I know you can! Probably!"

"O-Okay, I got it! I will! I'll do it! Just stop shoving your face at me!"

Caules nodded as he turned his eyes as far as possible to avoid looking at Astolfo cheering him on. He opened a cabinet and took out several magical tools.

"Hm, and the ingredients... all right, it's all here. I'll give it a try. I need all of you out of the basement so I can concentrate. When I snap my fingers, that's your signal to come back down."

The Servants and the homunculus exchanged looks and left the basement. Caules took a deep breath and then faced the burnt corpse, the tension clearly visible on his face.

Psychoscopy was not a very difficult technique - a way to pick up the remaining 'voices' that had been burnt into this place. Compared to the summoning of revenants and low-level magical beasts, it was trivially simple. But Caules had always found himself ill suited to this magecraft.

When you performed the technique, you would find yourself attuned on some level with the circumstances of when the thoughts had been left in that place. A skillful magus would be capable of maintaining a balance between synchronising with the event and blocking their own sensations. However, such a task would likely be beyond Caules. If he wanted to capture the remnants as accurately as possible, he would have to experience the same pain that the victim himself had suffered - not in full, perhaps, but a significant portion nonetheless. Cases of death by shock were well known among summoners, an elementary mistake for a magus taking his first steps on this path.

As an evocation specialist, Fiore could probably utilise a similar magecraft, but he would not be able to stand the humiliation of calling her from the castle for something so trivial. Luckily, it was already dusk - close to nightfall. It might not be night yet, but it would be easier to attune himself now compared to the daylight hours.

    "Okay... let's go."

Making up his mind, Caules unstoppered a small vial taken from the cabinet, releasing an irritating odour. He let one drop of the liquid drip onto the back of his hand and licked it off, numbing his tongue and blurring his gaze.

    "Prepare to synchronise."

Emotions inhabited voices; at times, they would leave their colour on material objects. And there was nothing they clung onto better than a dead body. The thoughts left behind in a corpse formed a never-ending loop of the moment immediately before death. Over time, these thoughts and emotions disappeared. But the more violent the death, the more powerful those remaining senses become, occasionally staining even the inorganic objects around them, such as furniture or the building itself. It was the base mechanism behind a haunting.

In this case, it was hard to say if even a day had passed since the death occurred. The manner of death was intense, as well. It was certain that he would find thoughts carved into the corpse and the basement itself.

    "Proceed synchronisation... Reversing time formation."

His flesh dissolved as his mind alone traversed backwards through time. Instantly, sweat began to form on his face. It was hot. Fire. He was burning.

    "Accelerate reversal... Pause. Replay."

Turning back slightly further, Caules began the playback. He sent a command to his body to snap his fingers.

When the Servants returned to the basement, they found Caules sitting in a wooden chair with his eyes shut. Astolfo tried to call out to him, but was stopped by Althea's whispers.

    "It's starting."

    S a v e

    m e

    "Ahhhhhhhhh!!"

Caules screamed. Astolfo tried to hurry to his side, but was stopped by Althea again.

"He's all right. It's just playing it back for him."

"A-Are you sure? Our boy's not looking very all right."

    "He is. Probably..."

    "...talk! I'll...! ...don't...!"

As Caules continued to cry out, broken words reached their ears. Chiron came closer and focused on hearing what he said.

    * * *

The agony that piled atop him like an avalanche was far greater than what he expected, so much so that he panicked and wanted to block it out. However, he no longer had a firm control over his mind.

When he was a child, he once let a spell run amok by accident - not unusual in itself. He could clearly recall the intense pain at that time. But this was beyond anything he could ever have imagined. Worse yet, he found that his thoughts were still clear despite the anguish. The one who was inflicting this pain upon him understood the human body perfectly - all of the key places that caused suffering, the required amounts, the appropriate means, and the effects which each of those had on the senses.

    "...tell us?"

If there had been any thought of defiance, any trace of conviction in his mind, they had not even lasted for a second before being erased.

    "Will you tell us?"

I will. I'll say anything. Anything! Just take this knife out of me! Take these pins out of my fingers, it hurts, it hurts so much, I can't take it!

    "Tell us..."

No, just kill me! Please! Stop the pain! This is too much... this is just too much... feeling my own body break part by part is too much!

Humans were beings of mind and soul - what a bad joke! What is the measure of a man mashed apart both on the inside and out? Just a freak! Just a piece of meat that happened to have white matter! God, stop, don't, just don't, stop it, stop holding my heart in your hand!

    "Won't you tell us...?"

Promise me that you'd kill me if I did! Please... please!

    "Tell... us..."

Ahh, now I could see, now I saw why she left my eyes and nose and ears and tongue alone through all of this. She needed me to see it. She needed me to smell it. She needed me to hear it. She needed me to talk!

Talk. It was time to talk. I know the answer to her question. What luck! I could answer her right away.

    "Is... that all...?"

That's all, that's it, that's everything, wasn't that enough? What? No, what are you doing? Don't! Not this smell! Not this! No!

    He burnt.

The heat that he had felt until this point came from his own rushing blood. But now, scientifically produced gasoline and manufactured matchstick - they marked his body with true physical heat as they ignited.

    * * *

    "Caules!"

He finally awoke to Chiron's call. His clothes were wet and dripping from profuse sweat. On his two arms were vivid burn marks, remnants of the synchronisation that would fade in time.

"Yeah... I went too deep. Shit..."

He felt like he was about to die, but this corpse before him had tasted pain even beyond that. He was tortured for information, set alight with gasoline - and as if that were not enough, his heart was gouged out while he was still alive. The fire must have been enough to white out everything else, but he still would have been able to tell when he had lost the organ. Just how much despair did he experience as his flesh was torn apart and burnt, and finally had his own heart removed from his body?

    "Well? What did you hear?"

"Unfortunately, we do not know what Assassin was attempting to extract by torturing him. However, there is one thing that the magus said which concerns me."

    "And that is?"

"He said, I know the answer."

"Where's the list that I brought?"

Althea handed it over to Caules, who began to rifle through it before the colour suddenly left his face.

    "I'm calling my sister."

Caules bolted out of the basement. Although the castle was not connected to a static line, both Fiore and Caules were young and had no problem handling mobile phones. Fiore picked up after a single ring.

    "What's the matter?"

"Do you have a list of those magi with you?"

"What are you saying? I already gave it to you."

Fiore said, sounding exasperated. Keeping his impatience in check, Caules asked once more.

"Yeah... but this one only has records of their fields and specialties."

    "What else do you need?"

"I want information on who was involved in the castle's security."

"Hmm, that might be a bit difficult. The fortress's bounded field was mostly laid down by Grandfather, though, and Uncle Gordes and Celenike."

"Did it involve a summoner named Avi Dicail? He was one of our own."

"Give me a moment. I was just tidying up Grandfather's belongings. I do recall seeing a list related to that... ah, here it is."

    "What was Dicail responsible for?"

"Maintenance of the low-level revenants that guarded the fortress."

Hearing her words, chills of fear ran through Caules's entire body. Magical defenses that were the cornerstones of the fortress. Every hallway, every room, every space in the castle was criss-crossed with alarms.

Sieg managed to slip his way inside yesterday, but he was one of their homunculi to begin with. There was no reason for an alert to sound. But if someone completely unrelated to the Yggdmillennias needed to infiltrate the castle...

"...so you're telling me that Dicail knew the key-codes that could disable the castle's security?"

    "Yes, I suppose so..."

"Get out of the castle, now! Assassin is probably there!"

    "What? What do you..."

Caules shouted just as the connection was cut. He hurriedly check the phone's display, but there was no loss of signal. He tried to contact Fiore by telepathy, which failed as well.

"Archer! Go to my sister, now!"

Chiron gave a single nod and vanished immediately. Althea and the others stood in stunned silence as Caules rushed off, but then hastened to catch up to him.

    "What's happening?"

Caules continued running as he answered Astolfo's question.

"Assassin was looking for ways to get into the castle! That's why some of them weren't hurt as much as the others! The difference was, she really laid it down on the ones that did know something!"

It was at this moment that Jeanne and the others finally realised that the Assassin they were dealing with was the worst kind of serial killer: one that was born to kill, picked up the skills to hide his own traces, and even learned to plan for complete victory.

Who would have imagined such terrible, unbound recklessness? Assassin was seriously attempting to kill every other Servant, using the strategy that he was most suited for - the assassination of the Masters.

"Rider, go on ahead! Your Master's in trouble too!"

Flustered, Astolfo nodded and turned into Spirit Form. Jeanne had already outpaced Caules and dashed forth with even greater momentum. With a Servant's speed, it should take them no more than five minutes to reach the castle. However, even that short delay might prove fatal. He could only pray that his last words reached Fiore, and that she understood him.

Forcing the pains of torture out of his mind, Caules kept running.
