    Elite: Dangerous

    Welcome, CMDR!

While everyone is waiting on Star Citizen to have more content, another space-sim is near release; Elite: Dangerous!

Technically the fourth game in the Elite universe, this stands as a partial remake of Elite and Elite II: Frontier. The original co-creator has been putting his blood sweat and tears into this making it happen. It was on Kickstarter a while back but I somehow missed it then. I bought into the Beta a few months ago and have been hooked ever since.

Elite: Dangerous is probably best described as a sandbox game in space. You're given a small ship and 1000 credits. From there, everything is on you. You can make money trading, bounty-hunting, mining, or just plain pirating. Think of it a bit like EVE except as a simulator and no degree in mathematics needed.

And here are a few screenshots I took myself back in Beta 2

It releases before the end of the year. You can get the normal release for like $50, so just wait.

I constantly forget the average age of users here. Chrono Trigger and FF 2 and 3 were $80 when they came out. That was 90s dollars, too.

Reminds me a bit of the X3 series. Graphics sure look nice at least. I have no faith in Beta releases though so I'll just bide my time until it officially comes out to give it a good look.

N64 games are the first ones I remember the price of clearly. They were still more expensive than modern games.

Well this is one game that's probably not good to explore every star system >.>

If this is anything like the previous games, it'll probably take some time to build up an explorer setup - and such a role may get expensive and lonely out there in deep space...

Especially since the entire Milky Way is explorable. Something over 4 billion stars when the game releases.

^The entire freaking galaxy may be a cause for some problems in gameplay :/

But anyways, what even happens at a game launch event? Gonna be livestreamed apparently.

Despite lack of planetary landing at the moment, I think I will probably go in. Start saving credits and learning to fly. Getting utterly shredded by the elite beta pilots no doubt.

^ I tossed that idea around once, though more so whether I could use a single piece of rear-projection screen fabric and make it seamless (or possibly even curved). It never made it past the 'yet another crazy idea' stage though, but three monitors isn't too bad, even if the bezel space is a bit annoying

Looks like I'll probably be picking Elite up, though will need some hardware upgrades to be able to play it on 3 monitors, unless someone manages to get DX11 support written into SoftTH sometime soon.

At least they were real games. I bought fucking Wacky Worlds for the Genesis for what I'm pretty sure was twice the price of a normal game because I wasn't old enough to understand it wasn't a new entry in the Sonic series. So many allowances, down the drain.

Anyway, I'll probably be getting this for Christmas so is there anything I should know to not immediately die and screw myself over right at the very beginning? Will I be all right using an Xbox 360 controller to play?

Flight sims really do call for a real flight stick, IMO...

That said, I haven't really played a flight sim in like 15 years, and my old Gravis Phoenix is long gone, so in the market for a flight stick too. Any recommendations?

Yeah, well, as long as we're dreaming about things we can't have I'd love to play this on an Oculus Rift, too.

Or at least a TrackIR system...

I'm drooling over the Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog, but it's... pricey. The T-16000M sounds like it's decent in that it has the same type of sensors for the precision though.

New patch notes said something about adding support for FaceTrackNoIR, though? And I already have a webcam so I'll just use that.
