It's funny, it's creative, it's action-packed. I have a soft spot for Satsujinki/Tsuki II stuff in general, and IRUN does some great stuff with his interpretation of Mr. Dawn and his mysterious partner, Mary. Shiki's drily humorous narration is a treat and while the editor's notes are a nice touch, it's not really used enough to add anything to the overall product. The story would have worked just as well without it, but it already does work so well that I can't mark it down for that.

It wasn't the power levels or waifus that made FSN so memorable for me. Its success rests on the quirks and the charm of its characters -- long-suffering but charismatic Cu, imperious Gilgamesh, scheming-yet-sensitive Medea, self-deluded Shirou, two-faced Rin, and so on.

So let's use a Grail War to tell a story of a man driven to madness by his legend. It suits the story, the setting, the mythology and the cast perfectly. The Berserker in question is a wonderful fit for someone who feels just as scorned by the world and puts on a pretty nice fight scene that harkens back to Hercserker vs Saber while putting just enough of a twist on the scene to keep it interesting.

The steady spooling out of clues as to this Berserker's identity is another great thing that harkens back to FSN, as opposed to spoonfeeding the audience everyone's name like Zero or Apocrypha. That doesn't inherently make a Fate story better, but it's clear that this entire story is a love letter to the VN that started it all.

That I happen to like this new Berserker's legend and have been curious to see him in Nasuland (and hopefully not as another token loli) is just icing on the cake.

tl;dr Uses the basic Grail War premise to pose an interesting what-if that fits FSN like a glove. Kind of like Heldenhaft.

On the contrary, making this Berserker a token loli would be one of the greatest things to ever grace the Nasuland.

Oh hey remember what I said about Harry Potter crossovers?

-1 to Trinity. I honestly don't have any real opinion on it as a crossover. Didn't get far enough into it to judge that. It is instead simply a garbage Harry Potter fanfic. Containing good old fashioned Dumbledore bashing which is always a surefire way to tell when a HP fanfic is bad.

Also +1 to Third Option for writing the Shirou/Sella fic so I don't have to.

Anyone checked out the latest Chaos Theory update yet? Though the atmosphere is obviously more grotesque then usual, Moczo's love for wry humor still manages to shine through. And the fight-scenes were just spectacular.

goldenteaset has updated the Swapping Fates series with several new installments. I feel like I'm maybe one of three people on BL to have read any of it.

So it's a thematically linked series about alternate stabs at the Fourth Holy Grail War that play mix and match with the Servant and Master rosters. Sometimes it's something like sticking Arturia with Kariya or Iskandar with Kayneth. Sometimes it does really new stuff like spinning up an entirely new Servant concept in Caster Shamhat and sticking her with Waver. Most of them are one-offs or only run about five chapters. Neat little thought experiments.

I'm especially fond of From One Tool to Another (Hundred-Face Hassan has a conversation with Iri) and Dialogue of the Grotesque (Kirei pals around with Gilles). I haven't read On the Next Battlefield yet, but it sounds interesting simply because it's the first one to move on to the Fifth Holy Grail War. It's a sequel to A Forming Bond (Sakura and Gilgamesh), and while I think goldenteaset smoothed over Gilgamesh's more questionable/evil traits in the first one, I'm curious to see where this one goes.

Edit: On the Next Battlefield turned out to be the first stinker of the bunch. I can't recommend that one. The other entries are all pretty fun, though.
