At first I didn't care much for Holdo, but I liked how her character subverted the "stodgy, obstructive superior officer" cliché and her ridiculously awesome heroic sacrifice scene definitely earned her a place in my heart.
She was Stodgy and obstructive though? Half the reason everything went wrong was because she refused to tell anyone the plan for no reason other than throwing her weight around.
Also her sacrifice would have mattered more if she hadn't waited until 90% of the transports were destroyed before making it.
I think the intent was that Poe was in the wrong for refusing to listen to her and rejecting her idea out of hand.
While she was condescending to Poe, it was somewhat understandable since his bullheadedness had just gotten a bunch of her men killed. Also, keep in mind that everyone thought there might've been a mole on the ship at that point (as Finn and Rose hadn't figured out how the First Order was tracking them through hyperspace yet) so from Holdo's POV, it makes some sense not to disclose the full details of her plan to a subordinate she might not fully trust.
Except A) Taking out the Dreadnought was objectively the right call. The thing was described in-universe as a fleet killer and the lore states that it's cannons have enough punch to break through a planetary defense shield. If it hadn't been taken out Poe wouldn't have ever been demoted because people would be too busy using terms like "annihilated" and "obliterated" to describe how dead they already were.
B) The stuff about the mole is never mentioned in the story. So all we have is Vice-Admiral Hunger-games-hair saying "lolz trust me fam" while everything falls apart. (And it's not like Poe was the only one with doubts, since we know that Rose caught several deserters before Finn.)
if lightspeed ramming is so effective why has it never been used before
one can think of a number of cases in which the ability to wreck something dreadnought-sized in one blow might have come in handy

I guess ships are too valuable to throw away as impromptu railguns.

You could probably ask the same thing about the short-range hyperspace jumping they used to get past the Star Killer's shielding in The Force Awakens.

Yeah, you have a point. I still think the intent was for Holdo to be in the right but in reality proper communication on either side would've made the issue moot.
So attach a hyperdrive to a large asteroid, point and shoot. It'd probably be easier, cheaper, and more effective then all those trench-runs. Especially when they need to take out Death Star 4 next movie.

To be fair that only works because Han Solo is FTL
by rights all space combat should take place with mass drivers, RKKVs and so on, but deadly lazors are what star wars is all about so what can ya do

I mean the more likely scenario is that we've put more thought into this discussion then the Writing team did the entire TLJ script, but sure, why not.
