I saw the Happytime Murders tonight. It was way better than I expected it to be. Pretty classic Noir movie mixed with a buddy cop movie.

Been on a movie binge. Most recently finished one is Coherence (2013). It's Schrödinger's cat, but, with people inside of a house instead of a cat in a box. It was really good, and made me think more of TM's universe. Heroic Spirits are weird.

So, I watched the second Guardians Of The Galaxy movie over today and yesterday.

Maybe it's because I've just been getting over a small slump in my life recently, but this is probably the most fun I've had watching a movie in a while. The crude humor was a little hit-and-miss, but when it worked it really worked (I actually laughed out loud during some of the comedic scenes, which is rare in movies), and it helped sell the Guardians as different from the more strait-laced Avengers. Plus, kid!Groot is seriously adorable.

The scene where Yondu and Rocket massacred the traitors on his ship though seemed a little gratuitous to me though. I get they were all assholes and probably deserved to bite it in some form or another, but killing a bunch of people who can't even fight back at all (especially in the last part of the scene when Yondu was directing his arrow by video-camera) just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Still, a very fun and enjoyable movie overall.

Recently watched Hereditary and it was pretty good. I found it genuinely effective on me for the most part, which I can't say for many other horror movies. I have mixed opinions on the direction the plot took and, though I liked the ending, I thought it was fairly predictable and I'd have enjoyed something a little more out there. As far as recent artsy horror movies go, I preferred Mother and found it more disturbing, but I appreciated the experience I got out of watching Hereditary nonetheless and enjoyed its creative imagery and excellent standout scenes that I won't spoil. It's probably my second favorite movie of the year so far, between Upgrade (3rd) and Isle of Dogs (1st).

I never watched a single MCU movie before this week, but I finally started to sit down and go through them a few days ago to see what the big deal is. So far up to Avengers 1, and Iron Man 1 has been the most enjoyable.

I don't know if Tony Stark 1 counts as an MCU film, it came out long before the concept was really a sure thing culturally or in the minds of the creators. It ages well as a result, though, so I'm glad.

Downey Jr. was already signed up for 9 movies when they made IM1, it might not have been clear how popular the concept would be and how many movies they would actually make, but MCU was already wip.

Huh, I didn't know they'd pushed it that hard production-wise by that point. I think the popular culture around CUs is what matters most in defining them, though, and that at least didn't exist back then.

It was when RDJ ad-libbed "I am Iron Man." in Iron Man that the top brass thought, 'You know, let's make something out of this, something novel'.

At least that's what an interview I read said.

And now I'm reminded of the extremely impressive dumpster fire that was the attempt of making a monster movie cinematic universe.

To my surprise, Bleach's live-action movie is actually good. More than a bit rushed with the characterisations, but overall, quite enjoyable.
Rurouni Kenshin is still the best manga-to-film adaptation, though.

So, I just finished watching Her (2013) about the dude who falls in love with his AI operating system. While I've read a number of books, played video games, watched other movies about the subject in many different flavors... this is the first time I've ever felt so uncomfortable. I even fast forwarded through some parts of it.

I thought it was a pretty interesting portrait of a man so lonely he would "date" his operating system and how technology is shaping our lives, right down to how we approach the concept of dating and soul mates.

But I can definitely see how it would make people squirm. The scene where he goes to meet his ex-wife at the restaurant and they just unload on each other was torturous.

Is that the actress from "True Grit"? I had no idea she was cast in this movie.
Oh, hey, Starscream, nice. Shame it seems like Megatron and Optimus will basically be cameos, but that's probably for the best.

In that movie, especially at the end, Alicia Vikander looks like a younger Natalie Portman. It honestly surprised me.
