They dialed back further on how big they were, actually. Just a little bit more and I think it'd be perfect, but, hey, looks better than what it first was. If they ever make a Part II where she becomes a
    Spoiler:
wandering desert mercenary / upper city agent hunting troublemakers and facing off against her own clones
I think progressively making them smaller until they're "normal" would be cool to show that gradual loss of innocence.

Yikes! Anime eyes definitely isn't an aesthetic that works in live-action.

The weirdest thing to me is that she's the only one.
    Like, why.
If tire going to do this weird anime thing, do it with everyone. Having her next to regular people is too much.

The uncanny valley effect is probably deliberate, to highlight the fact that she's not quite human. That said, if other robotic characters in the film are depicted with more normal eyes, it really would be somewhat inexplicable.

Not dissing on the trailer for it but transporting Pokémon from it’s kid-friendly filtered setting into IRL is one of those things that’ll freak me out if I think on it too long. It always give the vibe of one of those elaborately fanmade movie trailers.

This only really works for Detective Pikachu as well, since the setting is far more grounded than most Pokemon settings.

Also, Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu is the bomb.

Overlord was a pretty good movie. Going in as cold as possible is probably the best option. It goes a little over the top with some of the gore, and has only a handful of jump scares which are all telegraphed well in advance.

Watched The Descent. It was really good.

They should make more claustrophobic horrors.

    I especially liked how
    Spoiler:
the original ending was too bleak for US audiences, so they cut it right before. So it's a good thing I watched the UK release. Hallucinating that your torch is your dead daughter deep underground while cave dwelling monsters are closing in to eat you alive is a great ending. A light in the dark.

And I'll be back after I watch the sequel.

That sounds deliciously horrible, which is fantastic.

So after much trepidation, I finally got around to watching "The Grandmaster" - Wong Kar-wai's attempt to chronicle the life of martial artist and master to Bruce Lee - Ip Man.

Boy oh boy, so many mixed feelings about this film. I'll try to keep comparisons to Donnie Yen's Ip Man tetralogy to a minimum...

    Film Spoilers
Wong Kar-wai is both famous and infamous as an auteur, who dislikes writing out scripts and storyboards and relies much more on improvisation from the actors, and it really shows in this film. The first half of the film is basically Donnie Yen's Ip Man 1 & 2 crammed together in that it tries to tell a biopic of Ip Man's life with massive liberties taken. The second half of the film basically becomes a different movie as it's all about the female lead "Gong Er" who to the best of my knowledge is fictional and who is trying to take back her family martial art from the evil Ma San who killed her father - someone who Ip Man doesn't even have a conversation with let alone fight.

Speaking of the fights, there's a lot of random ones in this film. Like the "Razor", the barber dude who shows up once to have a brief scuttle with Ip Man, he gets his own titlecard and we go into his backstory but after his one scene is done we never see or reference him again in the film. The fights themselves are decent, though very heavy on slowmo' and DRAMATIC ZOOM INS to show the power of punches.

The main plot thread that really links the acts is the forbidden love between Ip Man and Gong Er, since everything else is largely unconnected scenes. Tragic love seems to be Director Wong's passion but I wasn't really feeling it in this film, it's not that the actors didn't have chemistry, but the writing between them didn't feel natural. In fact the greatest flaw of this movie seems to be that it's stuck between being a biopic and a love story and can't decide on which and so suffers for it.

TL;DR I wouldn't recommend unless you are familiar with the director and his unusual style and like that sort of thing.

Watched The Descent: Part 2. Mcjon, you was right--I probably shouldn't have. The monsters reminded me of Tolkien's descriptions of the orcs in The Silmarillion.

Though the other movies I watched were Pickings and The Looming Storm. Now those were good. I should watch more Noir films...
