I flipflop as time goes on. I'm inclined toward True Magic for now, and maybe in a few months, I'll go for calling it sorcery.
I mean, sorcery is so painless right?

    yeah I feel the same.

"True Magic" is unambiguous but I just want to use one word!

God magecraft is silly, I'm about to do a massive find+replace in my draft. Sorry guys I don't know if I can wait until tomorrow to make up my mind lol. Somebody persuade me if you feel very strongly about 'magecraft'.

Would you prefer to call it Thaumaturgy then?

I was gonna go for just Magic.

And Sorcery for the other thing, possibly.

It reminds me of how D&D Wizards have to work and study for their magic, so they frown on Sorcerers who inherently have power and can just fling magic at will.

But of course, I would like opinions.

Magecraft and Magic is still my favorite. Otherwise Sorcery for the latter.

Magecraft makes it sound like a systemic field of research and study that is subject to rules and procedures, and also works with the image of the typical researcher magus who approaches the subject like a science.

That reminds me that Mcjon went for sorcery for majutsu. Maximum confusion goooo

  11. #71
The trouble is that 魔法 has two acceptations, and therefore two translations. In spanish, the first one is 'magia' ('magic'), and the second one is 'brujería', which alludes to magic powers bestowed by demons and evil spirits (witchcraft), as opposed to magic knowledge acquired by years of research and effort (wizardry); According to wordreference, 'brujería' can be translated as: witchcraft, witchery, sorcery, devilry, and (black) magic.

魔法使いの夜 literally translates as Witches' Night (Walpurgis, Halloween, or any equinox or solstice day).

Sorcery for majutsu except for when something else sounds better, and magic for mahou. Magus for majutsushi and magician for mahoutsukai except for when I'd rather use wizard/witch like when it's being used in the layperson sense of the word. No abuse of capital letters

But mew, do what you feel sounds the rightest. Whatever you do, Tmwikia people are just going to take it and interpret it a different way, so there's that to look forward to.

Minimum confusion: any compound with 魔 gets left untranslated. No English ambiguity, just pure Japanese transmission.

魔 is the character for hemp/Cannabis sativa with oni included as a radical underneath, so clearly we should translate it as WEED DEMON

    Or maybe just 'Lio'?

What is your preferred translation of the two terms for magic? "majutsu" (the regular, technical kind) and "mahou" (the miraculous kind)

    In the past we've seen:

    Majutsu

    thaumaturgy
    sorcery
    magic
    magecraft

    Mahou

    Magic
    True Magic (capitalization?)
    other idk etc
    sorcery
Go for sorcery and magic for consistency with Mcjon's TM Encyclopedia.

    yay mew

...I did send you that pdf in which I had marked the untranslated bits of Theory of Magic, didn't I?

By the way, I'm way too late, but still... you may translate MAH TECHNIQUE in any way you want (magecraft, thaumaturgy, mystic arts, wizardry, sorcery, witchcraft, mumbojumbo, whatever) but please make MAH LAW (True) Magic, pleeeease
