You can also call them Magic and "magic". Bonus point if the characters do the motion with the fingers while saying that.
According to the wikipedia article on 魔術, the word is also used for juggling and sleight of hand, so in spanish the proper translation would be "birlibirloque". However, that's not very useful because my dictionaries translate that word to "(as if by) magic". Maybe you could use instead "mojo", or "dark arts/occult arts", which seems to be closer to the meaning of the runes. Another option is to use the term magick to tell them apart.

I just wanted to avoid using magic as much as possible back then for anything other than mahou.
Well in real life, when you say "magic" yes people will think you're talking about stage magic since that's the only real kind.
"mojo" is strictly colloquial in English.
"occult arts" is too broad, and has problems with compound terms .
"magick" is just a spelling choice. No one uses it here so I won't.

That's the closest you can get without going back to obscure and obsolete terms that nobody has used in one hundred years. The word is funny but matches the term well as it's also used for "sympathetic magic". For example, japanese people use this word when someone makes appear a coin from the ear of a child, or when a soccer player does wonders with the ball, evading the opponents.
Okay, one last try.
I've been digging through dictionaries of obscure and obsolete terms no longer in use, and there's this word "Magismo", that means "exercising the power of the magi". Google translate returns "Magianism", but I think "Magism" would be a better translation. Here's an article about the differences between Magic and Magism. This other says Magism ≃ Wizardry.
