srsly dudeMorrissey has attracted controversy after defending Kevin Spacey over allegations of sexual abuse. He said the star had been "attacked unnecessarily", adding it was "ridiculous" that Spacey was being erased from an upcoming film.
The former Smiths singer also argued that definitions of harassment and assault have become too broad.
"Anyone who ever said 'I like you' to someone else is suddenly being charged with sexual harassment," he said.
Tsc. Another good artist who's an asshole as a person.
Well, not his solo career, but I like The Smiths quite a bit. Though I suppose I may be crediting him too much when it comes to writing the bands' songs?
I feel like this is the rope everyone is walking when it comes to the Spacey situation, and it's important to establish exactly what is being talked about. Spacey is a creep who did something disgusting to a kid, no arguing or 'but what about' can change that. He also displayed some of the worst PR in recent showbiz history by tangling up his coming out as bi with him saying sowwy about sexually harrassing that kid back then, which is not only uncouth as all fuck but also damaging to the already marginalized and stereotyped queer community he's using to find visiblity and acceptance. Deeply apologizing for your fuckup and making amends in cases like these wouldn't have raised him to the realm of high morals in pretty much anyone's eyes, but it could've meant something, to show powerful men aren't untouchable and can be successfully called out on their shit. This didn't take place, sadly.
All that said, I don't think editing Spacey out of a film helps anyone, it's at best a silly gesture. The more everyone keeps pretending this shit doesn't happen in Hollywood and keeps it hush hush the worse the climate will be for everyone. Release a statement but keep him in your damned film at the price of it flopping, show some accountability for working with a person like him, show the public that celebs aren't untouchable gods, cut the ish.
As for the 'Is gross flirting sexual harrassment now???' thing, there is a pretty clear distinction. It might not look like one but a movie set is their office and if you don't shoot crass crap to your coworkers then they should be expected not to do the same to theirs, but I feel like this aura of fame and power (not always just an aura) prevents people from speaking up at the possible price of their careers.
I like Morissey's work but was always of the school of tuning out whenever he has something to say on anything other than music.
I agree on the fiasco of him being deleted from that one movie. It's a weird kind of erasure and I don't feel it sends the message that the director really intends it to; it feels more like hand-washing after the fact to try to get as professionally far away from Spacey as possible, less so than it is condemning Spacey for being a pedophile and terrible at owning up to what he's done.
As far as Morrissey's response goes, it smells of the typical blind MRA-ish hyperbolic response that essentially boils down to, "we can't be creepy towards women? That means we have to never even talk to one again in our lives!!" Except the fundamental problem there is never recognized, that if your only method of 'flirting' is being an overbearing weirdo then maybe, just maybe, it might be a personal problem and not society stripping you of your freedom of expression.

also tbh I was never a fan of The Smiths, "Girlfriend in a Coma" is still one of the most bizarre sincere mainstream rock songs ever released

Boiii and I was right.Morrissey has said of the song: "It occurred to me that within popular music if ever there were any records that discussed marriage they were always from the female's standpoint, female singers singing to women. There were never any songs saying 'do not marry, stay single, self-preservation,' etc. I thought it was about time there was a male voice speaking directly to another male saying that marriage was a waste of time ... that, in fact, it was absolutely nothing."
I don't dream about anyone
except myself

I don't know any of his music but I have never heard him say anything that isn't stupid.
He's such a mess omg.
- 2013: Morrissey refers to David and Victoria Beckham as "The Peckhams," describes them as "insufferable" and says they should be "dragged to the edge of the village and flogged."
- 2012: Morrissey links the suicide of a London nurse to the Duchess Kate Middleton. "There's no blame placed at Kate Middleton, who was in the hospital for, as far as I can see, absolutely no reason . . . She feels no shame about the death of this woman. The arrogance of the British royals is staggering, absolutely staggering."
- 2012: Morrissey has his band wear "We Hate William and Kate" shirts onstage.
- 2012: In an open letter to his fan club, Morrissey rips into the "blustering jingoism" of the London Olympics, comparing the mood in the U.K. to Nazi Germany. "The 'dazzling royals' have, quite naturally, hijacked the Olympics for their own empirical needs, and no oppositional voice is allowed in the free press. . . The spirit of 1939 Germany now pervades throughout media-brand Britain."
- 2011: In an interview with Billboard, Morrissey calls Lady Gaga "nothing new" and says her style is "fraudulent, and the exact opposite of erotic." He also refers to Madonna as "McDonna" and says Michael Bublé is "famous and meaningless."
- 2011: Of the Norway massacre in which 77 people died, Morrissey heralds to a Warsaw crowd, "That is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald's and Kentucky Fried shit every day."
- 2010: Discussing animal cruelty in China, Morrissey tells The Guardian, "You can't help but feel that the Chinese people are a subspecies."
- 2009: Morrissey leaves the stage at Coachella, explaining "The smell of burning animals is making me sick. I can smell burning flesh . . . and I hope to God it's human."
- 2002: From documentary The Importance of Being Morrissey: "Bring me the head of Elton John . . . which is one instance in which meat would not be murder, if it were served on a plate."
- 1997: Morrissey bashes Madonna again. "Madonna reinforces everything absurd and offensive. Desperate womanhood. Madonna is closer to organized prostitution than anything else."
- 1994: When asked about an incident in which an Australian student shot a starting pistol at the Prince of Wales, Morrissey responds, "I wish that Prince Charles had been shot. I think it would have made the world a more interesting place."
- 1992: Morrissey knocks dance music. "It's the refuge for the mentally deficient. It's made by dull people for dull people."
- 1985: Morrissey slams the charity group Band Aid and its co-founder. "Bob Geldof is a nauseating character. Band Aid was the most self-righteous platform ever in the history of popular music."
- 1984: Morrissey blasts the Cure. "Robert Smith is a whingebag."
- 1984: Morrissey laments the failed assassination attempt on Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher after the Brighton hotel bombing. "The sorrow of the IRA Brighton bombing is that Thatcher escaped unscathed."
Well, I always did like The Smiths mostly for the music and while idk what the rest of the band are like they certainly are at least more professional than this.

damn, that's actually a big oneIn addition to the eight women who say they were harassed, The Post spoke to about two dozen former employees who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Six said they saw what they considered to be harassment, eight said they were uncomfortable with Rose’s treatment of female employees, and 10 said they did not see or hear anything concerning.

And, really, this is just so ridiculous, have some dignity and make no more statements except in court instead of the simpering.“It is essential that these women know I hear them and that I deeply apologize for my inappropriate behavior. I am greatly embarrassed. I have behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that, though I do not believe that all of these allegations are accurate. I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken.
“I have learned a great deal as a result of these events, and I hope others will too. All of us, including me, are coming to a newer and deeper recognition of the pain caused by conduct in the past, and have come to a profound new respect for women and their lives.”
All these woman respeccers coming out of the woodworks, amazing age for feminism.

Uber covered up ginormous data breach
So, one of my teenage idols just destroyed another of my teenage idols. Trigger warning, rape is bad.
I strangely feel like I have to talk about this one because it both adds up if you followed her career and because ugh so that's what happened I wondered why it felt like she dropped off the face of the earth...
I had the hugest crush on her when I was seventeen. And unlike most of my guy friends, I loved boy bands because really, what straight guy wouldn't be envious of successful dudes with girls fawning over them like crazy?
Between this, Ruro Ken's mangaka getting arrested for child porn, and the whole issue with Pixar's chief, I feel like my adolescence has betrayed me.
