The scandal-ridden 197th district in Philladephia, Pennsylvania, has had a notorious history. Called into being to give Republicans in the State Legislature no-lose districts in Philladephia, ruthless gerrymandering made a district that was 95% Democrat. But one district didn't matter in the long run.
Then the previous Representative was removed from office for various corruptions, necessitating a special election. Then a court ruled that the Democratic candidate was ineligible as there was proof that he didn't live in the district (??). The same court ruled that the Democratic party "missed its chance" to put in a candidate.
So a Republican was the
only legal candidate in a 95% Democratic district. (If this whole thing doesn't reek of set-up, I don't know set-ups.)
So the election was held this week. And who won?
The Democratic candidate. With over
eighty percent of the popular vote. All write ins.
The Green Party candidate got a bit over eleven percent. Also all write-ins.
The sole candidate on the ballot - the Republican - got
less than eight percent of the vote.
Now there's an investigation going on because the Republicans are charging that the polling-place personnel actually showed people how to legally put in a write-in vote. How dare they show people the proper procedure for letting the Will of the People be known? (Heh heh.)
Now that is a Protest!
