While I'm all for another rousing round of "blame the Americans for everything", populism, or to be more accurate, demagoguism, was a problem even way back in the time of ancient Athens.

Indeed. It's actually part of what's frustrating about the current situation; the failsafes designed into our electoral system, particularly the electoral college, that were supposed to prevent populist demagogues from being elected were actually the methods by which one did.

I wouldn't point out populism per se as the issue either. Or at least not without having a clear definition of populism to work with because if you're anal enough about it you'd find out that every single democratic government has been a populism one way or the other.

But the sheer impossibility of arriving to some sort of consensus, even if it is about definitions, is a big part of the problem. Extreme polarization is acknowledged as one of the harsher symptoms of the major issue. (To clarify I'm talking more on a world scale, even if I'd consider the US the origin point of the problem)

Hmmm. Fair enough. One of the problems of identity politics is that it has a tendency to make every issue one of "existential significance," even when it's not in any literal sense. When the survival of the Tribe hinges on always getting exactly what one asks for, compromise, and even coexistence, with another Tribe that has different goals becomes impossible. The inevitable result is the destruction of one Tribe unless that way of viewing cultural identity is changed.
