It was nothing but a purile edgefest fueled by deus ex machina. I actually kinda liked Kanda before that arc because he was refreshing in the sense that he was just a giant asshole for no reason. Then he turns into this uguu PTSD-kun whose best friend was his reincarnated lover or something like that, and it was at that point I wondered if I was reading the same manga, because the drop in quality was that significant.

A backstory had been foreshadowed for a while, nothing implied it had to be tragic. It didn't have to involve literally nothing being Kanda's fault because we need to demonize the Black Church more, and oh heres his reincarnated girlfriend who has also done nothing wrong who became evil.
