I love Fate Points. They're basically a metagame rule. A lot of RPGs are using them nowadays. Normally the player only has access to in-game abilities, but this one gives them a bit of directorial control (a tiny bit of GM power) for a moment to alter the flow of the game. D&D has them too now except it calls them Inspiration points. It's basically a "please bail me out, GM" ability. A lot of people don't actually allow it in their D&D games though because it changes the experience a bit; you are supposed to only identify with your character and not control anything else, so D&D in general with its simulationist bent doesn't fit well with it.

Everybody keeps using up the game premise ideas I had on the backburner. ;_; KT already put more work into this though so I can only give it an A+.

If you think about FSN as a RPG, Saber dodging Gae Bolg would basically be Saber's player using a Fate point.

Could they be used for offensive purposes like "I totally wanna sneak up on this guy and execute an awesome stealth attack"?

    ayy lmao

Well I mean, it's more because of a GM decision on how to frame the game. Like if you're playing D&D, then the game focuses on simulating a real world, where everything is about figuring out the probabilities of achieving things based on your in-game abilities, so it doesn't make sense to suddenly have a miracle bail someone out for no reason. It also changes the player from someone trying to immerse themselves in the in-game experience and BECOME their character to an authorial stance where they look at the game more like someone writing a story, and their character just being a pawn they control in that story (because now you're dealing with the player controlling things that aren't strictly related to their in-game character). More narrative games that care more about the ups and downs of PLOT than fidelity to a "real" virtual world treat it less like an immersive virtual reality and more like a collective story you're telling together. So it depends on what kind of game experience you want to create.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I really like narrative based contrivances (dabbled Fate rulebooks too much) but for the most part any use in combat will be a lucky break or something, as to not totally jack up the flow.

@thedoctor: I sort of dislike the idea of using them offensively and if you get the drop on a Sealing Designate, either you guys are way too good or I screwed up. >_>

Yeah I used Fate Points in a game a while back too and that was the first question everyone asked. It is more manageable if you are using dice rolls since you can just make the Fate Point add +2 to your offense or something. But I was using a "GM decides" system so having someone just throw a Fate Point out there to decapitate another player for free didn't sound good.
