I admit to having a soft spot for the anime, as it was my introduction to TYPE-MOON as a whole - but I'm aware it's a poor adaptation of the VN, and disliked for it (among other things).

. . . At a guess, I'd imagine it went so poorly because eroge adaptations made quickly and cheaply was the rule of the time? They wanted to take advantage of the "horny idiots" buying the games, but didn't want to spend too much money on courting them (partly out of assumptions that the desperate will buy anything, partly out a desire not to be known for "those sorts of people" being their primary customer base). I know it came through Geneon/Pioneer over here, which folded not long afterwards (no clue about the Japanese side, though) - so possibly it was a budgetary issue . . .?

Why?

I really like to think of it as an assortment of small misfortunes.
- Complete misunderstanding of source material and the implications of its structure for adaptation, considering arc route is basically just bait to make you read the rest, much more so than Fate route. If they were going to do this, they should have gone more of the manga route.
- Changing stuff for no reason (Ciel's Spear of Longinus), despite the fact that the original stuff was always designed as minimalistic in the first place, like the rest of the visuals.
- Partial ignorance of how minimalism is actually used in the work, in the novel most stuff is bluish grey with some characters and text standing out because of their colors, but in the show everything has a washed out filter, even those characters.
- Animators could not animate two seconds of a fight to save their life
- Awful direction and pacing, especially in the use of the score, one good thing they had to work with

Most likely the money had to go to the VAs and score with nothing left, I don't even think it was that little.

Honestly, I watched it a long time ago (a 3-5 years ago, probably) so I don't remember perfectly, but I never got the impression that it deserved the level of hate it gets. I have read Arc's route most of the way through (a shorter long time ago) and I didn't notice many differences in the story (minus the route plot element merging also exhibited by Deen Fate).
Animation wise, it was a pretty meh 2000s anime, though. Even Deen had them beat.

Of course, I might find my mind changed if I read/watched both back to back now.
