Theme is what you use in 9th grade lit, motif is what you use in 10th.
So what do you use after that

Magic
You more or less stop using the word 'theme' to qualify statements. Ex: out of a 19 page paper I have here, 'theme' only comes up in the entire text 6 times; twice referring to themes of overall genres.
Eventually you get to college and start taking classes in subjects that are real and useful, i.e., not lit.
