If you value portability highly I'd consider an Alienware 13, forget about the whole "futureproof" thing though

You need a bigger laptop form factor for the goods. These threads could be a good start:

I'm really tempted to get 4 or 6 Solid State Drives and put them in a RAID-0 array.

Sometimes, I really really really hate Windows.

So much stupid automated uncontrollable stuff happening under the hood. Why is the shadow copy service deciding to thrash my hard drive copying every file 8 times instead of just once as it should be? Also, can't stop the blasted MS security essentials service without doing a registry edit? Oh, and the abomination that is the registry...

Give me /etc and well documented configuration files any day...

When your only 2 other choices are the walled-up, max security garden of OS-X and the chaotic uncharted wilderness of Linux you learn to be somewhat grateful for the shitty halfway meeting point of both that is Windows

All joking aside, start a VM and spin up a version of Ubuntu, see how you like it and if you do it's OS replacement time baby.

Well. I've been running Linux since the kernel was at a 2.0 number, so... almost 20 years. I only have the one Windows machine, which is used solely for those programs that require Windows... namely audio (yay, hardware dongles!) and games. The other three computers in the house... all Linux.

I still prefer the command line to GUI a lot of the time... even in Windows, I always have a terminal window open full time...

    cat playlist.htm | grep "data-video-id.*data-title" | sed -e "s/^.*data-video-id=\"\([^\"]*\)\".*$/\1/" > yt-urlhashes.txt

    Die, Windows, Die.

Now I'm conflicted because I found out about the new XPS 13 and wow, that bezel. That bezel is so good. Not to mention the better keyboard and trackpad, and the (theoretically) upgradeable SSD.

I bought one of those. Sent it back (because I fixed the computer it was to replace) but it was sweeet. That nonupgradeable RAM though.

I'm not really worried about that since the laptop I'm replacing only has two gigs of RAM anyway so I don't think it's even possible to do any worse.

Still I think the best thing about it was the possibility of opting for a nontactile screen.

Yeah, I'm looking at the 1080p i5 model primarily because of the extra battery life and because I can get it for ~700 bucks on eBay.

Getting myself a new laptop for my birthday. Went through my games and estimate I have ~620 hours of stuff that won't play or plays terribly on my current computer which I should now be able to finally enjoy.

Regardless of how good your PC is, you will always have 600 hours of unplayed games. Hail Gaben.

If I want to keep my living space, I won't. No new games for me for a while, I think.

Hahaha, so it turns out my MacBook Pro has a tiny dent on the inner side of the aluminium back plate which eats into the SATA cable which makes my new SSD hard freeze/stop working.

    Replacing the plate will be $50 and replacing the cable $30 ;_;
