It was inevitable.
Janx, you played 13th Age right? Isn't monster damage in that static? What do you think of that compared to rolling for it.

He never sleeps. He never dies.
Battle doesn't need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don't ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don't ask why I fight.
BTW if anyone is dieing to contact me during the day and I dont respond on skype, you can PM me on BL so I can reply during breaks.
Lol I didn't think I'd get in it too. I'm excited to see how it turns out.
My perception may be a bit skewed since I played it only online, but it speeds up handling of enemies i'd imagine. Players didn't seem upset by it or anything, Obviously it reduces RNG scenarios like hitting for min damage, or critting when you roll max. The later of which my players have really suffered from in the past since my custom system does like a random +- 40% to a static scaling value.
I probably would have used static for my system, but since I already run so much through macros, it doesn't save me time. Clicking "Axe" and seeing it spit out 5 or 1d6+2 doesnt make a different, but it would if i had to manually type it since it'd cut out the roll phase and just skip to damage.
Shouldn't be hard to convert, just take the average of the dice, plus the ability bonus, and you're good.
It may interact oddly with 4e or 3e/pf style damage reductions, but resistance in 5e is just half damage isn't it?

There's already a built in static damage option, I was just wondering how it affects the feel of combat. You know, less random crits or getting saved by just barely enough damage.

There's still the randomness of crits occurring though. And it still results in scenarios where you 'just' survive an attack. I guess it depends how much your players scrutinize the dice rolls.
I prefer randomized damage because it makes it harder to calculate how many hits you can take, which makes battle more alive than "Barring a crit I can take three hits, so I'll retreat after two.".

To be fair, in 13th age you can't just 5 foot step out. You have to make a 'disengage check' since its gridless.
You mean to leave at all, or to leave without taking an attack of opportunity?

tfw a roll was 1 away from blinding an NPC and possibly stopping a cutscene short
That moment when the party figures out who the villain is the moment he appears and start trying to think of ways to kill him without anyone noticing.
