Found a variation of this, which is 4d6 discard lowest and it makes you choose between two predefined stats to assign to a number on a grid space.
So STR 15, DEX 14, CON 17, INT 12, WIS 10, CHA 18 is one version of the stats you can get out of this.
I would certainly prefer this over regular rolling. :P

That is the WTF grid that one of my guys made. He rolled all the stats, filled in the grid and you have to choose a line. It was rather fun...it doesn't beat this one Paladin I rolled for a possible DMPC/NPC (I had to make a 17 a 12 because just so she wasn't too OP)
Wow, I flipping suck...though I think I should get higher for Int since I do have a Bachelor's Degree. Dex might also be higher as I've got good enough reflexes to swat a non dangerous projectile coming my direction, and catch things that are about to fall to the ground.

Also that "can you run full speed for five minutes" question is dumb dumb dumb since that's physically impossible by definition. Any speed any person on the planet can run for five minutes straight isn't their full speed because anaerobic systems don't work that way.

Though too many of those tests don't account for age, gender, etc. Some thing (Str & Int) can be increased by training but other things should increase (Wis) or decrease (Str, Dex, Con, and Cha) with age.

I actually managed to make my players retreat tonight. It wasn't even a dragon or some scary thing. Effectively they were trying to kidnap a prince (with Astolfo FC lol) while he was enroute to somewhere, and his bodyguards had the luck of the dice gods it seems.
I was actually rather surprised how poorly they did after they devastated the bandit and gnoll camps so easily.
I think the only time I've retreated from an actual fight and not an incoming fight is when my plan to mess up the casting of an enemy druid fucked up and she turned into a giant tree monster. I still got her with firespells while on the run but jesus christ.
We had no chance anyway, she had a legion of spiders on her side.
Spiders that for some reason none of you made your goddamn saving throws against.
