Well since I started getting back into drawing and doodling stuff in the back of my book, I tried drawing on my tablet. This thread is keep record of the misery of one trying to get better at art but can only dish out farts.

To be honest Archer looks like he let out one hell of a mean fart and is looking at you with "Whadya gonna do about it" face

Hi! Hey don't get discouraged, you need to do a bunch of wonky art pieces before you can get to the point of making awesome art that you're proud of. Though, even then you should always aim to be improving! You have the right mindset right now. Anyway, let me give some feedback:

Archer:

It's not that bad of a drawing! It's a little off but most of the proportions are mostly correct. The main problem is the lines. While there are exceptions to it, messy sketchy lines give the impression of lower quality or messy work. You could actually get away with this look by making Archer's body have sketchy lines but ensuring the focus of the picture, his face, has clean lines.

I don't know what program you are using but turn off "Transfer" on your brush options if you're trying to do linework. This makes it so the pressure sensitivity of your tablet only affects the "size" of the brush stroke not the transparency. Keep the transfer for painting!

Sacchin:

Whoa, that was quick! Yeah the lines here aren't messy at all! There are proportion issues and a few oddities but it's pretty solid. My main feedback critique would be to watch how you're shading colors. While your shading and colors with skin seem in the right place, you seem to have a bit of trouble figuring out how to shade her clothes and such.

The main offender is her yellow vest. You seem to be shading it with a darker yellow which can work but often looks muddy or less interesting. This probably will require you to experiment or look at references but shade colors with other colors, it makes the colors and shading far more appealing and interesting. Here's some touch ups I did:



(Ignore the purple ribbon, I was too lazy to unlasso it from the vest.) My subtle color touch ups are on the right. I changed the color balance on the yellow vest to have redder shadows, while I also changed the white shirt to have blue shadows. Here's an example in some other sacchin artwork:

As you can see the same effect of yellow vest and reddish shadows and white shirt and blue-gray shadows is used. This makes the colors more vibrant and awesome looking! You can shade areas the way you were, but use the color balance tool to experiment and change the color shade of shadows.

I will practice some more on drawing the human anatomy (I have a friend who owes me, so I guess she can pose for me awkwardly for a while) and how to shade clothes.

I'm using paint tool sai, so I guess the equivalent of the transfer function is the brush tool?

Holy shit the stabilizer was on 1. No wonder crap was difficult to draw D:

It's recommended to not turn the stabilizer on too high, though. I'd try to keep it in the range of 5-15 myself. If you go too high it makes the lines TOO smooth and impossible to place accurately.

I draw with it set to 15 all the time. I believe such a high value is unhealthy, yet keep using it.

I don't use SAI that much anymore but when I do it's specifically for the stabilizer and lineart vector layers. The equivalent of the transfer tool in SAI is just drawing on a lineart layer, it automatically functions for what you need for lineart while also having additional tools of editing the vectors in your line to make them smoother or thicker in areas. I would usually do the lineart in SAI then paint in CS6, but that's my own preference, SAI has most of what Photoshop has to offer.
