Touko actually bothered to bring him up in conversation. They also apparently had their own conversation. By talking to Tomas, Shinji gets both Tomas insight (has been key) and might be able to get some more Touko information for a later event. Working on Ofuda is something that should be done year-round anyway. While Shinji's in the east, he should be taking advantage of the things that are only in the east, like his death teachers or Shirou.

We don't really need to get more data on the youkai communities when it comes to getting a familiar, seeing as Shinji min-max'ing his choices based on that information just pushes things in a direction without any purpose behind it. Not to mention Shinji has (so far) the rest of his life to learn about the eastern supernatural community. Hell, he's living in it for a good portion of his year per year. We only really have outsider records of the Matou and Zouken himself for the good Matou stuff and the longer we wait on Zouken, the less focused on us he's gonna be as anything more than "Byakuya's son who did something instead of being useless."

Matou knowledge should also unlock better darkness knowledge, seeing as we focused on that already. Maybe Gramps knows something about it and might be proud of Shinji!

However, we have specialists that actually know how to use Ofuda like Hijiri or the guy who sold the ofuda book to him.

I don't think looking into the Matou past is very pressing. After all, Zouken will still be around for another 4 years at a minimal.

Meanwhile, it's a bit more time pressing to find out about Youkai before we go for a familiar. This might be the difference between accidentally choosing a prankster transformed Tanuki over a Tengu or Kitsune (not that Tanuki are bad mind you). Or even impressing a more powerful youkai to let us contract with one of their similarly blessed but inexperienced children.

Yeah, Zouken will be around for quite long, even if he tends to lose bits of body from time to time. He doesn't really travel all that much either. I don't have anything against resident Evil Old Man, but he just isn't that important right now.

Learning about youkai, on the other hand, can only help with our familiar, regardless of what it will be. We don't want to accidentally offend it, right?


Well, I could be interested in those lessons about flirting with Einzbern women. I mean, unless they are locked in ten year old bodies, they tend to be attractive. It just wouldn't be Shinji if he didn't have plenty of interest in girls. And those techniques can probably be used on other women too! Truly, our grandpa knows all useful things (which still doesn't mean I change vote).
