I also thought it was probably a typo or simply a transcription mistake. However, as you pointed out, 'liberty' also makes sense. This Gilgamesh is the one that became matured because of Enkidu's death---perhaps talking to Enkidu equates to denying Enkidu's death and thus also deny his own growth?
Personally, I was just a little curious, but there are Gilgamesh fans in my TL so I'd like to avoid feeding them inaccurate information. Whether the line actually used 自由 or 理由 do make a major different for them...you know what I mean. Anyway, thanks for your insight.
Update: Found a video on Nicodou, confirmed that it's indeed 自由 http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm30213539

There was a debate like a long while ago that was something along the lines of
"considering
how is Herc both a Heroic Spirit and a Divine Spirit?""No. Haven't you been taught that any humans, animals, or machines that leave any great achievements behind get removed from the ring of reincarnation and sublimate into beings of higher rank?
Heroes are that sort of beings.
To put it simply, they have been worshipped and made into artificial gods."
So now at least I see the answer to that question as, it doesn't matter what happens to the soul at all in terms of being a Heroic Spirit. Therefore, he can be both. Since like you said, its the record that's important.

Is it the one with the computer analogue thingy? The one where you explained that an uh ofshoot of a god help tje god spreading fame and blessing?

Wait uh
I always thought that the thing that got elevated is the soul itself
Like, how does that work then, if a soul is completely destroyed? Did he become HS purely by record and no soul was elevated to the Throne?
Head hurts

Wow that really makes me conflicted regarding how legit a HS is
So um we were really told Enkidu soul was really destroyed in the story?
Not sure why it should make you conflicted considering we've had many instances of Servants whose abilities change based on common perception of them.
Quetzalcoatl VS Luchador Rin.

Abilities changed by perception aint the same as not!original soul.
Because i always thought there is at least something original from the original hero, aka the elevated soul, in the throne for said HS basis.
Now it turns out it might not even the soul of the origonal hero, just a copy of it. Ok, a perfect copy, but still.
Anyway, i always thought there is at least an elevated soul from somewhere that serves as the basis for a HS and then has legends piled on top of it, and voila, a HS.
Tldr that it was shown that its not like that / not necessarily like that for all hs, it makes me feel bad
