    I thought the point of having familiars be things like birds was so that they could spy and relay information back to their owner without being noticed. Who's going to suspect a bird is spying on them? Magi don't like technology either.

    I pretty sure they're going to suspect birds made out of crystal, or strings of hair, or shadow giants, or dick worms, or Cath Palug (etc.) if they see them.

    The point I'm getting at is that the whole point of a familiar is that they can act autonomously. Which requires intelligence. This isn't rocket science.
