How you feel is exactly the same as how I feel about how Shinji fanclubs can exist and how they insist it is Sakura's fault that he becomes a rapist and asshole.
I mean, if we're making excuses for people, Kirei was literally born evil, and Zouken was alive for so long his soul began to rot and he went stark-raving bonkers (IIRC, even Cursed Arm mentally comments that Zouken is nuts).
On a more personal level, Shinji is indeed a more "realistic" evil, made worse by his sheer cowardliness and overall incompetence. It's hard to feel sympathy for someone whose basically a petty jerk, and only becomes less of a scumbag after being turned into a vessel for the Grail and getting rescued by a girl he tried to rape.
I think it's because Shinji is so petty. Everyone else does horrendous shit for grandiose reasons, tragic reasons, or idealistic reasons, but Shinji does them because he's a whiny cunt. It makes his actions all the more irritating to watch.
