The story of Gareth, writen by Malory, paints him as hiding his identity and looking like a generic inexperience new knight with his beautiful hands as his only standing characteristic. He's reconigze as strong after he defeats a series of colored theme knights and rescue his future wife (and suffering the abuse of his future sister-in-law by being too generic and new/inexperience on the journey*). So I can see where the idea of that first armor design could have come.
If I remember right (it's been years since I read Malory), I think Merlin enchanted his helmet to reveal his true name in front of all of Arthur's court after he complited that mission and proved his strenght in a tournament against the other knights.
*I wonder how TM is gonna retconned this with the genderbend

Yeah, the story is basically him enduring Kay and his future sister-in-law's mocking him for his Beautiful Hands and inexperience while striving to be a great knight anyway.

Yeah, because of the hiding his true name, Kay assigned him to the kitchen, and as mocking nickname him "Beaumains" ("Beautiful Hands/Fair Hands"), because that was the only thing that stand out about him.
(On a side note, Gawain was all "why is he doing this?" while Gaheris was "leave him, if this is how he wants to do things..." aka prove himself by himself not by being Gawain's little brother/the king's nephew)
Also, if I remember right, after he proved himself he was declared like the 4th strongest knight or something (After Lancelot, Tristan and Gawain)
