okay seeing this discussion on when Siegfried/Sigurd was alive let me make it clear. While the legends were written later they were always set in the 5th century, specifically around the same time Attila was alive because Attila was a character in those epics and the fall of the Kingdom of Bungundy which the epics tell was an actual historical event that happened in that time, if you cut away all the fantastical and personal elements from the story. Sigurd and Siegfried were alive in that time.

He turned all of Russia into furries, spent most of his time sleeping while his secret police did all the dirty work, was dumb/insane enough to mistake Kotomine and Anastasia for his religious advisor and wife respectively, and wanted to turn the entire world into furries so he could rule over them forever... f**k that guy! In the non-sexy way, I mean.
I'll take it back! Megane is so cool!!!

I mean, he turned the people in Russia into animal hybrids so they could survive the eternal winter, was kept in a susceptible state by Mozart/Salieri in order to keep him asleep, and likely believed Rasputin/Anastasia's deceptions because of that. Especially since he saw through the ruse almost immediately when he woke up fully.
I also don't recall any mention of him wanting to turn the rest of the world into Yaga, beyond maybe the semi-delusional conversations he had with Rasputin wherein he was reassured that the nonexistent world beyond Russia wasn't a threat. Which seemed to be less about some sort of maniacal desire to rule the world and more an extension of his general semi-paranoid authoritarian reign.
Sarcasm, my good man. Altaris was all, "He was a good king to the very end", and I wanted to show how his actions could very easily be interpreted to cast him in a more negative light.
Also he felt his way of doing things was right and wanted to extend his rule outside Russia to 'save' what was left of the world. Let's also not forget he destroyed a city for rebelling the last time he woke up and everyone feared him awakening. It's highly likely he was nuts to begin with (his playable Servant profile even hints at him being sort of insane in the description of one of his Skills) and Kadoc's manipulation made it worse.
"Ah... finally that person is here ... I understand, i truly understand ... Master, if it's possible I would like to continue to be your Servant ... but if ... No, it's nothing. Both Sigurd and I, no matter what happens, will never hurt you"
@G-Man: I wasn't implying his actions were good. All I was saying was that he behaved like a true king, no matter what he did he did it with all his conviction and until the end when he understood what he did was futile, he made sure the one succeeding him possesses that same conviction to make the hard choices.
Also Ivan was a lot more human and relatable than Skadi ever was.
Even the recent ones. Thanks MoC.

BEHOLD! THE SIG OF GOLDEN TRUTH! Pillaged from McJon, Tsukikan et al.
Now it's time to put your knee on the ground and pray that TM will not forget about Ganymede on the Lostbelt of Mount Olympus.
For me it was the opposite. I found Skadi more relatable and Ivan's personality far more inhuman (though one could argue it takes an inhuman mindset to be a king and that would certainly fit the themes of the Nasuverse).
Ivan made hard choices after being given a raw deal, and slowly went nuts over time. When he awakens, and briefly regains his senses, he goes after you with all he has, because he believes in his divine mandate to rule, and that his rule is the best bet for his world to survive, and after losing he's surprisingly chill and offers surprisingly kind words to the MC so they won't have to feel as bad about erasing his world.
Skadi got stuck with a sh*t hand too, still tried to do her best, even knowing deep down that her world was an aberration that shouldn't exist, joined forces with her enemy against a greater threat, and despite knowing we'd be enemies again right after, she still did her best to support us, and was willing to fight a hopeless battle for her world after Surt was defeated.
Both were incredible kings in their own ways. Both were flawed kings in their own ways. Both were dealt an unfair hand in an impossible game.
All joking aside, I think they were both amazing, and I wish we could have gotten Skadi in her true form, or Ivan in his original form.
^: I respect your opinion. For me Ivan is cool because his personality being so erratic at time is close to the real Ivan in real life (including tenacious his faith in God), who's capable of both great and terrible things. Ivan for me inspire both the brutality of his Lostbelt, his willingness to be the first Yaga while being both terrifying and regal. His appearances and actions can be monstrous and inhumane, but we saw a lot of human moments from him. From his love for his wife, his stubborness, his arrogance and him slipping toward insanity. He is just, for me, a very well-written antagonist, especially for a Lostbelt that serves as the opening of the whole and set the tone, he conveyed that very well.
Skadi so far has shown me very little in term of actual substance. Her motivation do makes sense when you see the context of her world and the love for both species, but i just cannot agree with her methods and she is also nothing close to the Skadi that i imagine. Her personality doesn't feel engaging, she feels more Scathach than Skadi, even though Scathach's personality doesn't even surface during the Lost Belt. And thus it makes me feel totally disconnected to her.

Altaris, it is okay for not understanding Skadi because she is a God. Also, there is close to zero of Scatha the crazy old hag in her. Skadi is too loving for her own good, and that brings her fall, but if she is not that way, neither can the lostbelt exist for 3000 years.
At least we can be grateful that it's not real Scathach ruling this Lostbelt.
If she was, she would probably train the whole populations to fight the Jotuns haha.
