I thought the point of having familiars be things like birds was so that they could spy and relay information back to their owner without being noticed. Who's going to suspect a bird is spying on them? Magi don't like technology either.

Sure. So why then would you make a bird a familiar rather than a rock? A rock can be remote from you just like a bird can.

The point I'm getting at is that the whole point of a familiar is that they can act autonomously. Which requires intelligence. This isn't rocket science.
